    Settings and Adjustments
    Using the Setup Display
    Z 
      
    Using the setup display, you can do the initial setup,
    adjusting the picture, etc.  You can also set a language for
    the subtitles and the setup display, limit playback by
    children, etc.
    For details on each setup display item, see pages 44 to 50.
    Note
    You can display the setup display only when the system is in stop
    mode.

    Select ÒSCREEN SETUPÓ after pressing DVD SETUP.
    ÒSCREEN SETUPÓ allows you to set the display according
    to the playback conditions.
    The default settings are underlined.
    xTV TYPE
    Selects the aspect ratio of the TV to be connected.
    ¥
    4:3 LETTER BOX: when you connect a normal TV to the
    system.  Displays a wide picture with bands displayed
    on the upper and lower portions of the screen.
    ¥ 4:3 PAN SCAN: when you connect a normal TV to the
    system.  Displays the wide picture on the whole screen
    with a portion automatically cut off.
    ¥ 16:9/4:3 WIDE MODE: when you connect a wide-screen
    TV to the system or when you connect a TV with WIDE
    MODE function to the system (displays a wide picture
    with bands displayed on the upper and lower portions
    of the screen).
    Note
    Depending on the DVD, Ò4:3 LETTER BOXÒ may be selected
    automatically instead of Ò4:3 PAN SCANÓ and vice versa.

    4:3 WIDE MODE
    xSCREEN SAVER
    Turns on and off the screen saver.  If you turn on the
    screen saver, the screen saver image appears when you
    leave the system or the remote in pause or stop mode for
    15 minutes or when you play back a CD for more than 15
    minutes.  The screen saver is useful to prevent your
    display from becoming damaged.
    ¥
    ON: turns on the screen saver.
    ¥ OFF: turns off the screen saver.
    xBACKGROUND
    Selects the background color or picture of the TV screen in
    stop mode or while playing a CD.
    ¥
    JACKET PICTURE: The jacket picture appears in the
    background, but only when the jacket picture is already
    recorded on the disc.
    ¥ GRAPHICS: The graphic picture stored in memory in
    the system beforehand appears in the background.
    ¥ BLUE: The background color is blue.
    ¥ BLACK: The background color is black.
    Note
    If a disc which does not contain the jacket picture is played while
    ÒBACKGROUNDÓ is set to ÒJACKET PICTURE,Ó the graphic
    picture stored in the system will automatically appear in the
    background.

    ÒCUSTOM SETUPÓ allows you to set the playback
    conditions.

    xPAUSE MODE
    Selects the picture in pause mode.
    ¥
    AUTO: A picture including subjects that move
    dynamically is output with no jitter.  Normally select
    this position.
    ¥ FRAME: A picture including subjects that do not move
    dynamically is output with high resolution.
    xPARENTAL CONTROL ,
    Sets a password and playback limitation level when you
    play DVDs with playback limitation for children.

    Control) .Ó

    Playing some DVDs can be limited depending on the age
    of users.  The ÒParental ControlÓ function allows you to
    set a playback limitation level.

    the DVD after entering your password
    Set ÒLEVELÓ to ÒOFFÓ in Step 7, then press H.
    To change the password
    1After Step 3, select ÒCHANGE PASSWORDÓ using
    M/m, then press , or ENTER.
    The display for changing the password appears.
    2Follow Steps 2 and 3 to enter a new password.
    zYou can turn off the Parental Control function just after
    inserting the DVD (Parental Control Temporarily Canceled)
    When you set a playback limitation level and insert the DVD, the
    PARENTAL CONTROL display appears. Enter the password to
    turn off the Parental Control function.
    When you stop playing the DVD, the level returns to the original
    level.
    zIf you have forgot your password
    Enter the 6 digits number Ò199703Ó in Step 2 to clear the current
    password.  To enter a new password, follow the procedure from
    Step 2 again.
    Notes
    ¥ When you play DVDs which do not have the Parental Control
    function, playback cannot be limited on this system.
    ¥ When you do not set a password, you cannot change the
    settings for playback limitation.
    ¥ Depending on the DVD, you may be asked to change the
    parental control level while playing the disc.  In this case, enter
    the password, then change the level.
    When you stop playing the DVD, the level returns to the
    original level.

    Settings for Sound (AUDIO
    SETUP) 
    Select ÒAUDIO SETUPÓ after pressing DVD SETUP.
    ÒAUDIO SETUPÓ allows you to select the sound track.
    The default settings are underlined.
    xTRACK SELECTION
    Gives the sound track which contains the highest number
    of the channels priority when you play a DVD on which
    multiple audio formats are recorded. If multiple audio
    channels are recorded in PCM, DTS or Dolby Digital
    format, the higher-numbered channel audio recorded in
    PCM, DTS or Dolby Digital format is played.
    ¥
    OFF : No priority given.
    ¥ AUTO : Priority given.
    Notes
    ¥ When you set this item to ÒAUTO,Ó the language may change
    depending on the ÒAUDIOÓ settings in ÒLANGUAGE SETUP.Ó
    The ÒTRACK SELECTIONÒ setting has higher priority than
    that of ÒAUDIOÓ settings in ÒLANGUAGE SETUPÓ (page 44).
    ¥ If PCM, DTS and Dolby Digital sound tracks have the same
    number of the highest channels, the system selects PCM, DTS
    and Dolby Digital sound tracks, in this order.
    ¥ Depending on the DVD, the audio with priority may be
    predetermined.  In this case, you cannot give priority to the
    DTS or Dolby Digital format by selecting  ÒAUTO.Ó
    Settings for Speakers
    (SPEAKER SETUP)
    Select ÒSPEAKER SETUPÓ after pressing DVD SETUP.
    To obtain the best possible surround sound, first specify
    the distance of the speakers from your listening position,
    then set the balance and level.  Then use the test tone to
    adjust the speaker volumes to the same level.
    xSIZE
    When you do not connect center or rear speakers, or move
    the rear speakers, set the parameters for CENTER and
    REAR.  Since the front speaker and subwoofer settings are
    fixed, you cannot change them. The default settings are
    underlined.

    Specifying the rear speaker position and height
    If you select other than ÒNONEÓ in ÒREAR,Ó specify the
    position and height of the rear speakers, referring to the
    diagram on page 15. The default setting is underlined.
    ¥
    BEHIND (LOW)
    Select this if the rear speakers are located in the section
    B and D.
    ¥ BEHIND (HIGH)
    Select this if the rear speakers are located in the section
    B and C.
    ¥ SIDE (LOW)
    Select this if the rear speakers are located in the section
    A and D.
    ¥ SIDE (HIGH)
    Select this if the rear speakers are located in the section
    A and C.
    These parameters are not available when ÒREARÒ is set to
    ÒNONEÓ.
    xDISTANCE
    You can vary the distance of each speaker as follows.  The
    default adjustments are in the parentheses.
    ¥ FRONT (5m)
    Front speaker distance can be set in 0.2 meter steps from
    1.0 to 15.0 meters.
    ¥ CENTER (5m)
    Center speaker distance can be set in 0.2 meter steps
    from a distance equal to the front speaker distance to a
    distance 1.6 meters closer to your listening position.
    ¥ REAR (3.4m)
    Rear speaker distance can be set in 0.2 meter steps from
    a distance equal to the front speaker distance to a
    distance 4.6 meters closer to your listening position.
    Notes
    ¥ When you set the distance, the sound cuts off for a moment.
    ¥ If each of the front or rear speakers are not placed an equal
    distance from your listening position, set the distance of the
    closest speaker.
    xBALANCE
    You can vary the balance of each speaker as follows.  The
    default adjustments are in the parentheses.
    ¥ FRONT (center)
    Adjust the balance between the front left and right
    speakers (6 dB (L) to 6 dB (R), 1 dB steps).
    ¥ REAR (center)
    Adjust the balance between the rear left and right
    speakers (6 dB (L) to 6 dB (R), 1 dB steps).xLEVEL
    You can vary the level of each speaker as follows.  The
    default adjustments are in the parentheses.
    ¥ CENTER (0 dB)
    Adjust the level of the center speaker (Ð6 dB to +6 dB,
    1 dB steps).
    ¥ REAR (0 dB)
    Adjust the level of the rear speakers (Ð6 dB to +6 dB,
    1 dB steps).
    ¥ SUBWOOFER (0 dB)
    Adjust the level of the subwoofer (Ð6 dB to +6 dB,
    1 dB steps).
    xTEST TONE
    You can hear the test tone from each speaker in sequence.
    The default setting is underlined.
    ¥
    OFF: The test tone is not emitted from speakers.
    ¥ ON: During adjustment of ÒBALANCEÓ or ÒLEVEL,Ó
    the test tone is emitted from both speakers
    simultaneously.
    To adjust the volume of all the speakers at one
    time
    Use the VOLUME control.
    To return to the default setting
    Select the item, then press CLEAR.
    Adjusting the speaker volume
    1When nothing is played, select ÒSPEAKER SETUPÓ
    after pressing DVD SETUP.
    2Select ÒTEST TONEÓ and set ÒTEST TONEÓ to ÒON.Ó
    You will hear the test tone from each speaker in
    sequence.
    3From your listening position, select ÒBALANCEÓ or
    ÒLEVELÓ and adjust the value of ÒBALANCEÓ and
    ÒLEVELÓ using M/m.
    During this adjustment, the test tone is emitted from
    both speakers simultaneously.
    4Select ÒTEST TONEÓ and set ÒTEST TONEÓ to ÒOFFÓ
    to turn off the test tone.
