    With PBC (Playback Control) functions, you 
    can enjoy simple interactive operations, search 
    functions, and other such operations.
    PBC playback allows you to play VIDEO CDs 
    interactively by following the menu on the TV 
    screen.
    1Start playing a VIDEO CD with PBC 
    functions.
    The menu for your selection appears.
    2Select the item number you want by the 
    number buttons.
    3Press .
    4Follow the instructions in the menu for 
    interactive operations.
    Refer to the operating instructions supplied 
    with the disc, as the operating procedure 
    may differ depending on the VIDEO CD.
    To go back to the menu
    Press O RETURN.
    Note Depending on the VIDEO CD, [Press ENTER] in 
    Step 3 may appear as [Press SELECT] in the 
    operating instructions supplied with the disc. In this 
    case, press H.
    Tip To play without using PBC, press ./> or the 
    number buttons while the system is in stop mode to 
    select a track, then press H or  . The system starts 
    continuous play. You cannot play still pictures such 
    as a menu. To return to PBC playback, press x twice, 
    then press H.

    You can preset 20 FM stations, and 10 AM 
    stations. Before tuning, make sure to turn down 
    the volume to minimum.
    1Press FUNCTION repeatedly until 
    “TUNER FM” or “TUNER AM” appears 
    in the front panel display.
    2Press and hold TUNING + or – until the 
    auto scanning starts.
    Scanning stops when the system tunes in a 
    station. “TUNED” and “ST” (for stereo 
    program) appear in the front panel display.
    3Press SYSTEM MENU.
    4Press X/x repeatedly until “MEMORY” 
    appears in the front panel display.
    5Press  or c.
    A preset number appears in the front panel 
    display.
    6Press X/x to select the preset number 
    you want.
    Tip You can select the preset number directly by 
    pressing the number buttons.
    7Press .
    The station is stored.
    8Repeat Steps 1 to 7 to store other 
    stations.
    9Press SYSTEM MENU.
    The system menu turns off.
    To change the preset number
    Restart from Step 1.
    To change the AM tuning interval 
    (except for Russian and Middle 
    Eastern models)
    The AM tuning interval can be set to either 
    10 kHz or 9 kHz.
    To change the AM tuning interval, first tune in 
    any AM station, then turn off the system by 
    pressing "/1 on the unit. While holding down 
    > on the unit, press "/1 on the unit to turn on 
    the power. If you change the interval, AM preset 
    stations will be erased. 
    To reset the interval, repeat the same procedure.

    Preset radio stations in the system’s memory 
    first (see “Presetting Radio Stations” (page 52)).
    1Press FUNCTION repeatedly until 
    “TUNER FM” or “TUNER AM” appears 
    in the front panel display.
    The last received station is tuned in.
    2Press PRESET + or – repeatedly to 
    select the preset station.
    Each time you press the button, the system 
    tunes in one preset station.
    Tip You can select the preset station number directly 
    by pressing the number buttons.
    3Adjust the volume by pressing 
    VOLUME +/–.
    To turn off the radio
    Press "/1.
    To listen to non-preset radio 
    stations
    Use manual or automatic tuning in Step 2. 
    For manual tuning, press TUNING + or – 
    repeatedly.
    For automatic tuning, press and hold TUNING + 
    or –. The automatic tuning stops automatically 
    when the system receives the radio station. To 
    stop the automatic tuning manually, press 
    TUNING + or –. 
    To listen to radio stations when 
    you know the frequencies 
    Use direct tuning in Step 2. 
    1Press D.TUNING.
    2Press the number buttons to select the 
    frequencies.
    3Press .
    Tip To improve reception, reorient the supplied antennas 
    (aerials).
    If an FM program is noisy
    If an FM program is noisy, you can select 
    monaural reception. There will be no stereo 
    effect, but reception will improve.
    1Press SYSTEM MENU.
    2Press X/x repeatedly until “FM MODE” 
    appears in the front panel display.
    3Press  or c.
    4Press X/x to select “MONO.”
    The default setting is underlined.
     “STEREO”
    : stereo reception.
     “MONO”: monaural reception.
    5Press .
    The setting is made.
    6Press SYSTEM MENU.
    The system menu turns off.
    Naming preset stations
    You can enter a name for preset stations. These 
    names (for example, “XYZ”) appear in the front 
    panel display when a station is selected.
    Note that no more than one name can be entered 
    for each preset station.
    1Press FUNCTION repeatedly until 
    “TUNER FM” or “TUNER AM” appears 
    in the front panel display.
    The last received station is tuned in.
    2Press PRESET + or – repeatedly to 
    select the preset station you want to 
    create an index name for.
    3Press SYSTEM MENU.
    4Press X/x repeatedly until “NAME IN” 
    appears in the front panel display.
    5Press  or c.
    6Create a name by using the cursor 
    buttons.

    Press X/x to select a character, then press c 
    to move the cursor to the next position.
    Letters, numbers, and other symbols can be 
    input for a radio station.
    If you make a mistake
    Press C/c repeatedly until the character to 
    be changed flashes, then press X/x to select 
    the desired character. 
    To erase the character, press C/c 
    repeatedly until the character to be erased 
    flashes, then press CLEAR.
    7Press .
    “COMPLETE” appears in the front panel 
    display, and the station name is stored.
    8Press SYSTEM MENU.
    The system menu turns off.
    Tip You can check the frequency by pressing DISPLAY 
    repeatedly (page 54).
    Viewing the station name or 
    frequency in the front panel 
    display
    When the system is set to “TUNER FM” or 
    “TUNER AM,” you can check the frequency 
    using the front panel display.
    Press DISPLAY.
    Each time you press DISPLAY, the display 
    changes as shown.

    * This is displayed if you have entered a name for a 
    preset station.
    ** Returns to the original display when several seconds

    You can control your TV (Sony only) with the 
    supplied remote.
    Controlling TVs with the 
    remote
    You can control the TV by using following 
    buttons.
    * Use these buttons while pressing the TV button.
    - is for selecting a channel number greater than 
    10. (For example, for channel 25, press -, then 
    2 and 5.)
    Note Depending on the TV, you may not be able to control 
    your TV or to use some of the buttons above.
    THEATRE SYNC allows you to turn on your 
    Sony TV and this system, changes the system 
    mode to “DVD,” and then switches the TV’s 
    input source you set with one button push.
    Preparing for the THEATRE 
    SYNC function
    Register the TV’s input source connected to this 
    system.
    Press and hold TV INPUT* while entering 
    the code for the TV’s input source 
    connected to this unit (see the table) using 
    the number buttons.
    * Functions as both TV INPUT and DISPLAY button.
    The TV’s input source is selected.
    Set your TV’s input to the input you used to 
    connect the unit. For details, see the operating 
    instructions of your TV.
    * Except for North American models.
    Other Operations
    Controlling the TV with the 
    Supplied Remote
    By pressing You can
    TV [/1* Turn the TV on or off.
    TV INPUT* Switch the TV’s input source 
    between the TV and other input 
    sources.
    TV VOL +/–* Adjust the TV volume.
    TV CH +/–* Select the TV channel.

    Operating the THEATRE SYNC 
    function
    Point the remote to the direction of TV and this 
    unit, then press THEATRE SYNC once.
    If this function does not work, change the 
    transmit time. The transmit time varies 
    depending on the TV.
    To change the transmit time
    Press and hold TV CH +* while entering the 
    code for transmit time (see the table) using 
    the number buttons.
    The transmit time from the remote is selected.* Functions as both TV CH + and PRESET + button.
    Note This function is only for Sony TVs. (This function 
    may not work on some Sony TVs.)
     If distance between TV and this unit is too far, this 
    function may not work. Install the unit near the TV.
     Keep the remote pointed in the direction of the TV 
    and this unit while entering the code.
    You can enjoy karaoke (singing along with a 
    disc) by setting the system to karaoke mode. 
    You can connect two microphones (not 
    supplied)* to the unit.
    * Only Russian models, supplied with one 
    microphone.
    Setting the system to karaoke 
    mode
    1Press FUNCTION repeatedly until 
    “DVD” appears in the front panel 
    display.
    2Plug a microphone into the MIC 1 or 
    MIC 2 jack.
    The system enters karaoke mode.
     “   ” lights up in the front panel display.
    3Start playing the music.
    Microphone sound is output with DVD 
    function.
    To cancel karaoke mode
    Disconnect the microphones.
    To set the system to karaoke 
    mode on the Control Menu 
    display
    1Press   DISPLAY while the system is in 
    stop mode.
    The Control Menu display appears.

    2Press X/x repeatedly to select  [KARAOKE MODE], then press  . 
    The options for [KARAOKE MODE] appear.
    3Press X/x repeatedly to select [ON], then 
    press .
    The system enters karaoke mode.
    To cancel karaoke mode, select [OFF].
    Note Microphone sound may drop when changing discs.
     Before connecting, press MIC VOL – to set the 
    microphone volume to minimum.
     You cannot change the sound field during karaoke 
    mode.
     In karaoke mode, the overall volume may drop.
     If you set [TEST TONE] to [ON] (page 76) during 
    the karaoke mode, the karaoke mode is set to off 
    automatically.
     Microphone sound is not output when:
    – the microphone is not connected to the unit 
    properly.
    – the microphone volume is set to minimum.
    Tip The karaoke play is performed with the audio channel 
    you selected using AUDIO (page 37).
    Adjusting the microphone
    You can adjust the microphone volume and 
    level of the echo effect.
    To adjust the microphone volume
    Press MIC VOL +/– to adjust the 
    microphone volume.
    To add the echo effect
    Press ECHO.
    Each time you press ECHO, the echo level 
    changes as follows:
    To cancel the echo effect, select “ECHO OFF.”
    Note If howling occurs: 
    – move the microphone away from the speakers. 
    – lower the microphone volume or echo level. 
    – lower the overall volume. 
    Dolby Digital Karaoke format
    (DVD only)
    Dolby Digital format, which reproduces 
    surround sound using 5 channels, can also 
    contain the “Dolby Digital Karaoke” format 
    which is specialized for karaoke. In the Dolby 
    Digital Karaoke format discs, guide melody and 
    guide vocal tracks are recorded in addition to the 
    accompaniment. You can select them when the 
    system is in karaoke mode.

    You can check the audio information by 
    pressing AUDIO 
    (page 37). When playing a 
    Dolby Digital Karaoke disc, “ ” appears at the 
    current audio format.
    Example:
    Changing the key of a song 
    (Key Control)
    You can change the key to suit your vocal range, 
    except when the system is in stop mode.
    Press KEY CON # or 2 to suit your vocal 
    range in karaoke mode.
    You can adjust the key higher or lower in 
    13 steps (
    26 – #6).
    Note Depending on the discs, you may not be able to 
    change the key.
     The key automatically returns to the original key 
    when:
    – you turn off the power.
    – you change the function.
    – the disc tray is opened.
    – you stop playback.
    – the title or track changes.
    – you change the album.
    – the play item is changed during PBC playback.
    – you perform Scan Play.
    – you cancel karaoke mode.
    Playing karaoke with any 
    stereo disc (Karaoke Pon)
    You can enjoy karaoke with a stereo-recorded 
    disc, even if it is a non-karaoke disc, by reducing 
    the sound of the vocals.
    Press KARAOKE PON in karaoke mode.
    To cancel Karaoke Pon mode
    Press KARAOKE PON again.
    Note This function may not work well in the following 
    cases:
    – Only a few instruments are playing
    – A duet is playing
    – The vocals on the disc deviate from the center
    – Monaural-recorded discs (the accompaniment is 
    also reduced)
    – Multiplex
     During Karaoke Pon mode, the stereo effect is 
    reduced.
     Karaoke Pon mode is automatically canceled when:
    – you turn off the power.
    – you change the function.
    – the disc tray is opened.
    – AUDIO stream is changed.
    – you set [VOCAL SELECT] to other than [OFF].
    – you cancel karaoke mode.
    Selecting the vocals (Vocal 
    Select)
    (DVD VIDEO, VIDEO CD, CD only)
    When playing a DVD with the Dolby Digital 
    Karaoke format in karaoke mode, you can turn 
    on or off the guide vocal recorded in the karaoke 
    track.
    When playing a VIDEO CD/CD in karaoke 
    mode, you can listen to the vocals.
    You can also change the guide vocal channel. 
    You can select different kinds of vocals.
    1Press   DISPLAY twice in karaoke 
    mode.
    The Control Menu display for karaoke 
    mode appears.
    2Press X/x repeatedly to select  [VOCAL SELECT], then press  .
    The options for [VOCAL SELECT] appear.
    3Press X/x repeatedly to select the 
    desired vocal channel.
    The output channel changes as follows. The 
    default settings are underlined.
    xWhen playing a DVD VIDEO
    OFF]: The guide vocal is canceled. 
    1:ENGLISH DOLBY DIGITAL3 / 2
    2/0: Recorded only with 
    accompaniment. 
    3/0: Recorded with guide 
    melody. 
    3/1: Recorded with guide melody 
    and one guide vocal. 
    3/2: Recorded with guide melody

    4Press . 
    Note When playing a DVD VIDEO, the function works 
    only with the Dolby Digital Karaoke format.
     Depending on the discs, you may not be able to 
    change the guide vocal channel.
     The channel returns to the default setting when:
    – you turn off the power.
    – you change the functions.
    – the disc tray is opened.
    – AUDIO stream is changed.
    – you cancel karaoke mode.
    – you set karaoke pon mode to on.
     When playing a DVD VIDEO recorded only with one 
    kind of guide vocal, select [1].
    Selecting the scoring mode 
    (Score Mode)
    When karaoke mode is turned on, you can use 
    the scoring mode.
    Your score is calculated by comparing your 
    voice with the music source.
    1Press  DISPLAY.
    The Control Menu display appears.
    Note The Control Menu display has 2 pages. 
    Depending on the source, press   DISPLAY 
    twice to select [SCORE MODE].
    2Press X/x repeatedly to select  [SCORE MODE], then press  . 
    The options for [SCORE MODE] appear.
    3Press X/x repeatedly to select a 
    setting.
    The default settings are underlined.
    
    : Beginner or Intermediate level.
     [NORMAL]: Advance or professional 
    level. 
     [DEMO]: Demonstration mode. 
    Consistently displays a high score for 
    every song.
    4Press . 
    5Start playing the music.
    6Press SCORE before singing a song in 
    karaoke mode.
    The previous highest score appears on the 
    TV screen.
    7After singing for more than a minute, 
    press SCORE again to view your score.
    Your score is calculated from a scale of 
    0 to 99.
    Your score is displayed for five seconds, 
    during which time the system enters pause 
    mode.
    Note The highest score is reset when the system is turned 
    off.
     The score mode function may be canceled when 
    certain remote buttons are pressed.
     In some cases, you may not be able to use the scoring 
    mode.
    Tip The [SCORE MODE] setting is automatically 
    changed to [EASY] when the system is turned off.

    Reinforcing bass frequencies
    You can reinforce bass frequencies.
    Press DYNAMIC BASS.
    Bass frequencies are effectively reinforced.
    To turn off the sound effect
    Press DYNAMIC BASS again.You can set the system to turn off at a preset 
    time, so you can fall asleep listening to music. 
    You can preset the time in 1 or 10-minutes 
    increments.
    1Press SYSTEM MENU.
    2Press X/x repeatedly until “SLEEP” 
    appears in the front panel display, then 
    press  or c.
    3Press X/x to select a setting.
    The minutes display (the remaining time) 
    changes as follows:
    Tip You can select the remaining time by pressing 
    the number buttons. In this case, you can preset 
    the time in 1-minute increments.
    4Press .
    The setting is made and “SLEEP” lights up 
    in the front panel display.
    5Press SYSTEM MENU.
    The system menu turns off.
    To change the remaining time
    Restart from Step 1.
    To cancel the Sleep Timer 
    function
    Select “SLEEP  OFF” in Step 3.
