Checking CD information on the displayYou can check CD information on the display.Depending on the region in which you purchased your CD player, the default language may not be “ENGLISH.” Change the LANGUAGE setting, if necessary.When you are playing MP3 CD containing files with an ID3 tag, ID3 tag information is displayed. (When there is no ID3 tag information, nothing is displayed.)
Notes• The characters A–Z, a-z, 0-9, and _ can be displayed on this player.
•  Before playing a file, the player reads all file and group 
(or folder) information on the CD. “Reading” is displayed. Depending on the content of the CD, it may take some time to accomplish this reading.

Bookmark playIf you add bookmarks to your favorite tracks, you can listen to these tracks only from the track with the lowest number.1	During playback of the track where you want to add a Bookmark, press and hold •ENTER until “ (Bookmark)” flashes on the display.2	Repeat step 1 to add Bookmarks to the tracks you want (up to 99 tracks for each audio CD and 512 tracks for each MP3 CD).3	Press P MODE/ repeatedly until “ ” flashes.4	Press •ENTER.
To remove the BookmarksDuring playback of the track with a Bookmark, press and hold •ENTER until “” disappears from the display.
If you change CDs and start playing, all the bookmarks added for the previous CD will be erased.
Listening to the Radio
1	Press RADIO ON/MEMORY to turn on the radio.2	Press TUNE + or – to tune in the station you want and adjust the volume.
Turning off the radioPress  • RADIO OFF.
Tuning in the station quicklyPress and hold TUNE + or – in step 2 until the frequency digits begin to change on the display. The CD player automatically scans the radio frequencies and stops when it finds a clear station.
Emphasizing the bass soundWhile listening to the radio, press SOUND/AVLS repeatedly to make “SOUND” appear.
Improving broadcast receptionExtend the headphones cord.
Headphones
NoteKeep the headphones connected to the  jack of the CD player. The headphones cord works as the FM antenna.
–  Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
–  Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
–  Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different 
from that to which the receiver is connected.
–  Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician 
for help.
You are cautioned that any changes or modifications not expressly approved in this manual could void your authority to operate this equipment.

Playing orderThe playing order may differ depending on the method used to record MP3 files on the disc. In the following example, files are played in order of 1 to 7.

(Maximum directory levels: 8)Notes• Depending on the quality of the disc and/or the condition of the recording device, it may take a while for playback to start. It is also possible playback may not start at all.
•  On a disc that has MP3 files, do not save files in other formats 
and do not make unnecessary folders.
•  Be sure to add the file extension “mp3” to the file name. 
However, if you add the extension “mp3” to a file other than an MP3 file, the player will not be able to recognize the file properly.
•  To compress a source in an MP3 file, we recommend setting 
the compression parameters to “44.1 kHz,” “128 kbps,” and “Constant Bit Rate.”
•  To record up to the maximum capacity, set the writing software to 
“halting of writing.”
Power Sources
To use the batteries (not supplied)1	Slide OPEN to open the player lid and open the battery compartment lid inside the CD player.2	Insert two LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries by matching the  to the diagram inside the CD player and close the lid until it clicks into place. Insert the  end first (for both batteries).

Playing a CD
1	Slide OPEN to open the lid and fit the CD to the pivot, then close the lid.2	Press •ENTER.To play from the first track, press and hold •ENTER until playback starts while the CD player is stopped. To jump to the succeeding/previous groups*, press  + or  –. *MP3 CD only
• This CD player can play CD-Rs/CD-RWs recorded in the 
Compact Disc Digital Audio (Audio CD) format, but playback capability may vary depending on the quality of the disc and the condition of the recording device.
•  This product is designed to play back discs that conform to the 
Compact Disc (CD) standard. Recently, various music discs encoded with copyright protection technologies are marketed by some record companies. Please be aware that among those discs, there are some that do not conform to the CD standard and may not be playable by this product.
Note on DualDiscsA DualDisc is a two sided disc product which mates DVD recorded  material on one side with digital audio material on the other side.  However, since the audio material side does not conform to the Compact  Disc (CD) standard, playback on this product is not guaranteed.
Digital MEGA BASS function During play, press SOUND/AVLS repeatedly to select “SOUND 1” 
or “SOUND 2.”
If the sound is distorted, turn down the volume.
While listening to the radio, this function is disabled.

If it is hard to hear the FM broadcast due to interference from strong radio waves1	While listening to the FM broadcast, press P MODE/.“LOCAL” flashes.2	Press •ENTER within 10 seconds after you finished the previous operation.*“LOCAL” stops flashing. 
* If “LOCAL” disappears from the display, start from Step 1.
To cancel the LOCAL setting, press P MODE/
, and then press •ENTER so that “LOCAL” disappears from the display.
If it is hard to hear the FM broadcast due to poor reception1	While listening to the FM broadcast, press  P MODE/.“LOCAL” flashes.2	Press P MODE/ again.“MONO” flashes.3	Press •ENTER within 10 seconds after you finished the previous operation.*“MONO” stops flashing.
* If “MONO” disappears from the display, start from Step 1.
To cancel the MONO setting, press P MODE/
 twice, and then press •ENTER so that “MONO” disappears from the display.
Presetting Radio StationsYou can preset up to 40 stations.
1	Press RADIO ON/MEMORY to turn on the radio.2	Press DISPLAY for 3 seconds or more.The CD player starts scanning the stations from the lower frequencies and stops for about 5 seconds when a station is received.3	If you want to preset the received station, press •ENTER until the preset number appears.The received station is preset on the preset number 01 and the CD player starts scanning for the next receivable station. If you do not press •ENTER within 5 seconds, the CD player will start scanning the next receivable station without storing the station.4	Repeat step 3 until all receivable stations are preset.If the stations have already been stored, the newly preset stations will replace the old ones.
NotePresetting will not be completed until scanning of all receivable stations is finished. If you cancel presetting before scanning of all receivable stations is finished, the stations you preset are not stored in the CD player’s memory.
Presetting stations manually1	Press RADIO ON/MEMORY to turn on the radio.2	Press TUNE + or – to tune in the station you want.3	Press and hold RADIO ON/MEMORY until the preset number appears on the display.When the station is preset successfully, the beep is heard (in case that BEEP is set to “ON” in the menu).The preset number increases by one.4	Repeat steps 2 and 3 when you preset more stations.
NotePreset number is selected automatically. You cannot select preset number.
To change a preset station1	Press RADIO ON/MEMORY to turn on the radio.2	Press  or  to select the preset number of the station you want to change.3	Press RADIO ON/MEMORY for 2 seconds or more.4	Press TUNE + or – to tune in the station you want.Start this operation within 30 seconds after you finished the previous operation.If 30 seconds pass with nothing done, start from step 2.5	Press and hold •ENTER.The beep is heard (in case that BEEP is set to “ON” in the menu) and the preset station has been changed.
To cancel a preset station1	Perform steps 1 to 3 of “To change a preset station.”2	Press •RADIO OFF for 2 seconds or more.When the preset station is canceled, and the next preset number decreases by one, the beep is heard (in case that BEEP is set to “ON” in the menu).
To cancel all preset stations1	When nothing appears on the display, press •ENTER with keeping DISPLAY pressed until the menu screen appears.2	Press  +/– repeatedly to select “PRESET CLEAR,” then press •ENTER.“CLEAR?” appears on the display. When you press •ENTER, all the preset stations are canceled.
Playing Preset Radio StationsYou can tune in a station easily by pressing  or .
Changing the Tuning 
IntervalWhen using the CD player abroad, change the FM tuning interval on the menu, if necessary.100 kHz area: the U.S.A., Canada, and Latin America50 kHz area:  Other areas
Change the tuning interval while the radio is turned off and CD play is stopped, as follows.1	When nothing appears on the display, press •ENTER with keeping DISPLAY pressed until the menu screen appears.2	Press  + or – repeatedly to select “TUNE STEP,” then press •ENTER.3	Press  + or – repeatedly to select “50 kHz” or “100 kHz” then press •ENTER.
NoteAfter changing the tuning interval, you must preset radio stations again, as the preset stations are erased when you change the tuning interval.
Changing Optional SettingsYou can set the various functions such as the language for the menu and G-PROTECTION.1	When nothing appears on the display, press •ENTER with keeping DISPLAY pressed until the menu screen appears.2	Press  + or – to select the item you want and press •ENTER.3	Press  + or – to select an option and press •ENTER.

NoteEven if “G-PROTECTION” is set to “On,” sound may skip:

•  For CD-Rs/CD-ROMs, when a poor-quality disc is played 
or there is a problem with the original recording device or application software.
Precautions
On safety• Should any solid objects or liquid fall into the CD player, unplug it and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
•  Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN 4.5 V (external 
power input) jack.
On power sources• When you are not using the CD player for a long time, disconnect all power sources from the CD player.
On the AC power adaptor • Use only the AC power adaptor supplied. If your player is not supplied with an AC power adaptor, use a commercially-available AC power adaptor* (rated output voltage/current: 4.5 V DC/700 mA). Do not use any other AC power adaptor. It may cause a malfunction.
Polarity of the plug
*  The voltage of power supply is different depending on the country. Please buy an AC power adaptor in the country where the product is to be used.• Depending on the AC power adaptor, noise may be heard while using the system. Refer to the operating instructions of the AC power adaptor.
•  Do not touch the AC power adaptor with wet hands.
•  Connect the AC power adaptor to an easily accessible AC outlet. 
Should you notice an abnormality in the AC power adaptor, disconnect it from the AC outlet immediately.
On dry batteries• Do not throw the batteries into fire.
•  Do not carry the batteries with coins or other metallic objects. 
It can generate heat if the positive and negative terminals of the battery are accidentally contacted by a metallic object.
•  Do not mix new batteries with old ones.
•  Do not use different types of batteries together.
• 
When the batteries are not to be used for a long time, remove them.•  If battery leakage occurs, wipe off any deposit in the battery compartment, and install new batteries. In case the deposit adheres to you, wash it off thoroughly.
On the CD player• Keep the lens on the CD player clean and do not touch it. If you do so, the lens may be damaged and the CD player will not operate properly.
•  Do not put any heavy object on top of the CD player. The CD 
player and the CD may be damaged.
•  Do not leave the CD player in a location near heat sources, or in a 
place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or sand, moisture, rain, mechanical shock, unleveled surface, or in a car with its windows closed.
•  If the CD player causes interference to the radio or television 
reception, turn off the CD player or move it away from the radio or television.
•  Discs with non-standard shapes (e.g., heart, square, star) cannot 
be played on this CD player. Attempting to do so may damage the CD player. Do not use such discs.
On headphones
Road safetyDo not use headphones while driving, cycling, or operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas.  It can also be potentially dangerous to play your headphones at high volume while walking, especially at pedestrian crossings. You should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
Preventing hearing damageAvoid using headphones at high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
Consideration for othersKeep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you.
To clean the plugsIf the plugs become dirty, there is no audio or noise is heard. Clean them with a dry soft cloth periodically.
TroubleshootingShould any problem persist after you have made these checks, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
“HOLD” appears on the display when you press a button, and the CD does not play. The buttons are locked. Slide HOLD back.
The volume does not increase even if you press VOL + repeatedly.  Press and hold SOUND/AVLS to select “AVLS OFF” so that you can cancel the AVLS function.
The CD player does not operate properly.  Moisture condensation has occurred. Leave the player aside for several hours until the moisture evaporates.
Even though the file number is displayed, the player skips the file and does not play it.  A file with a format that is unplayable on this player is recorded on the CD.
