INSTRUCTIONSFORUSE CareandCleaning Manyweaponsrequirestrippingoratleastpartial disassemblyinordertocleanandoilthemproperly. Thisdoesnotapplytotherevolver,whichmaybe cleanedandlubricatedunderallnormalcircum- stanceswithoutremovingasinglepinorscrew. Ifatanytimedisassemblyoftheweaponis indicatedforrepairs,etc.itisrecommendedthat thegunbereturnedtothefactory,oryoushould atleastemploytheservicesofaqualifiedgunsmith. Tokeeprevolversinpropercondition,andto insureperfectfunctioningintimeofneed,itis essentialthattheybekeptcleanandcoatedwith arustinhibitingoil.Careisrequiredtoprevent rust,especiallyindamp,humidclimates,orwhen sweatyhandscomeincontactwiththeguns. Tocleantherevolverasrequiredwhenthe weaponisnotfired,orwhenkeptinstorage,rub itexternallywithalightlyoiledcloth,andthen swabouttheboreandcylinderchamberswithan oilyflannelpatch.Removeexcessoilbutleavea lightfilmtoprotectthearmagainstrusting.Clean outallcreviceswithasmallcleanbrush. Forcleaningafterfiring,scruboutthebore andchamberswithanapprovednitrosolvent,and thenuseabrushdippedinsolventtoremoveall depositsfromaroundthebreechofthebarrel,ex- tractorhead,andotheradjacentareaswhichhave beensubjectedtotheactionofpowderorprimer residue.Ifthereisanyevidenceofleadparticles, orotherforeignmatterleftinboreorchambers, itiswelltoscrubthesepartsfurtherwithabronze orbrassbrushdippedinpowdersolvent. Aftercleaningofftheentiregunwithnitroor powdersolvent,removealltracesofthesolvent, bothontheexteriorofthegunandintheboreand chambers,followingimmediatelythereafterwith theapplicationofalightfilmofoil.Notethat thereisusuallysomeresidueinthesteelofboth barrelandcylinderthatworksoutandbecomes apparentwithinfrom24hoursto48hoursafter theinitialcleaning.Thiscanberemovedwitha bristlebrushwithperhapsalightre-application ofpowdersolvent,afterwhichtheoilfilmshould bere-establishedonallsurfaces. Theaboveappliesifammunitionusedisof Americanmanufacture,incorporatingsmokeless powdersandnon-corrosiveprimers.Ifotherthan smokelesspowdersandnon-corrosiveprimersare usedintheserevolversthencleaningmethods shouldbeadjustedaccordingly. Donotstorerevolverswithapluginthebar- rel,sincethisisacontributingfactortosweating. Bythesametoken,maintenanceorstoragerooms shouldbekeptataconstanttemperaturewiththe leastpossiblehumidity,andthegunsshouldnotbe storedencasedinanythingwhichwillattractor holdmoisture,suchasleather. Ifrevolversaretobestoredforalongperiod oftime,theinternalmechanismofthelockwork shouldbeheavilyoiledwithanacidfreelubricat- ingoil,andtheexterioroftheguns,aswellasthe boreofthebarrelandthechargeholesofthe cylinder,shouldbeheavilycoatedwithananti-rust oil.Itisanestablishedfactthatmoistureisthe greatestenemyofmetallicobjects,particularlyin climateswheretemperatureandhumidityarehigh, andsaltairispresent.Extremecareshouldbeex- ercisedthatallmetallicsurfacesbekeptcleanand oiled,andthewoodstocksontherevolversshould beinspectedforcrackscausedbymoisture.Aperi- odicalcoatofrawlinseedoil,wellrubbedinwith thehand,willhelptopreventthesplittingof stocks,butcaremustbeexercisedthatthelinseed oildoesnotgetintothemechanismoronmoving parts,asithasatendencytogumwhendry. Function TheSmith&Wesson.38Military&Policerevolver isa6-shotbreech-loadinghandweapon.Itispro- ducedwithasolidframeandaswing-outtype ofcylinder,having6chambersaroundacentral axissothat6shotsmaybefiredbeforereloading isnecessary.Theweaponmaybefiredeithersingle actionordoubleaction,andcockingthehammer byeithermethodcausesthecylindertorotateand alignthenextchamberwiththebarrel.Therate offireislimitedonlybythedexterityoftheoper- atorinreloadingthecylinderandhisabilityto aimtheweaponandpullthetrigger. Loadingandfiringthisrevolverisacompara- tivelysimpleoperation,asfollows: Pushthethumbpieceforward.Thiswillre- leasethecylinderSOthatitmaybeswungoutto theleftsideforloading.Holdingthegunsothat thecylinderisinitsoutermost l osition,andwith themuzzlepointingdownwar,insertcartridges inthechargeholesmakingcertainthattheyare firmlyseated.Returnthecylindertoitsoriginal positionintheframe,pressingitfirmlyintoplace tomakesurethatitlocksinalignment.Thegun isnowreadytofire. Insingleactionshootingthehammerispulled orcockedtoitsextremerearwardposition.The gunmaythenbefiredbymerelypressingthetrig- ger.Thistypeofshootingisusedfordeliberatefire wherethereistimetosighttheguncarefullyand squeezethetriggerinanunhurriedfashion.Itis alsousedincompetitiveshootingfornotonlyslow firebutalsofortimedfire,whereby20secondsare allowedforthefiringofeach5shots,andrapid firewhere10secondsareallowedforthefiringof each5shots. Thereistimeeveninrapidfireshootingfor thedeliberatehandlingoftheguninsingleaction fashionjustsolongasthefunctionisperformed withoutlossoftimeandinadefinitecadence wherebythecyclewillbecompletedwithinthe allocatedtime. Wheretimeorothercircumstancesdonot allowforsingleactionfiretherevolverisused doubleaction.Tofiredoubleactionallthatis necessaryistoaligntheweaponwiththeobject whichyouwishtohitandpullthetriggerfirmly allofthewaytotherear.Thiswillcausethe hammertorisetoitsfullcockedpositionandthen falltoexplodethecartridge,andaspreviously statedtheonlylimittothespeedwithwhicha weaponcanbemanipulatedinthisfashionwillbe determinedbythedexterityoftheshooter.This typeofshootingis.1;equiredincombatworkor underemergencyconditionswherethe.gunmust beusedwithgreatspeed. Toextractthefiredcasespressthethumbpiece forwardandswingthecylinderouttotheleftside.
