The opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Summer
Games proved to be unprecedented in terms of projection size,
the number of projectors employed, the viewing audience
and technical challenges. Dozens of performance assessments,
over a half year of simulated tests, and 10 hours of intensive
operation everyday for an entire month eventually resulted in
the largest, longest and most beautiful visual display – viewed
live by millions of people worldwide. In addition to the 63 Christie CP2000-ZX projectors, the opening and
closing ceremonies were supported by 84 Christie Roadster S+20K
projectors, which used the same triple-stacked design to create
    extraordinarily stunning images of 20,000 lumens in SXGA+ (1400 x 1050)
resolution. Specifically, 54 projectors were installed on the parapets of
the second tier audience viewing areas for the long-distance projection
of images on moving screens (ie. on the globe and the Taiji sequence).
The remaining 30 projectors were installed on the top of the Bird Nest
to project onto the 118ft (36m) long, 66ft (20m) wide main painting scroll
in the middle of the stage.

    IMAGE IS EVERYTHING

Cutting-edge visual technology was tailored to seamlessly and flawlessly
deliver perfect imagery to tell the history of China. Christie projectors
won the favor of renowned film director, Zhang Yimou, with their high
resolution, high contrast, and HD color performance. “Excellent color \
reproduction similar to those being watched in the theaters” was the
comment of the art crew of the opening ceremony regarding
the image quality. As noted by Zhang Yimou, “to create the most exhilarating moment –
whether it existed long ago, or exists in another part of the world –\

we used state-of-the-art audio/video technologies to showcase the
essence of our splendid Chinese culture.”
As the giant scroll folded, and the torch slowly went out, the spectacular
moments of light and shadows were etched in our memories forever.

    LCD TECHNOLOGY
From June 20 to August 24, 2008, the Image Mill – a sound and image
spectacular created by Robert Lepage and Ex Machina with E/T/C Paris –
provided a visual display of the history of Québec during the Québec\
     400th
anniversary festivities. The Image Mill recounted the history of the city with
what is believed to be the world’s longest video projection display. To accomplish the feat, E/T/C Paris installed 27 Christie Roadster S+20K \
projectors to create a continuous image across the silos and around
    one side of the structure.
The spectacular imagery and sounds of the Image Mill showcased the
history and culture of Québec every evening for 10 weeks. It will be
remembered by everyone as a stunning work of art made possible
    by state-of-the-art technology.

Montreal-based Solotech, one of North America’s largest suppliers of sound, lighting and video equipment,
provided a full compliment of equipment for the show including 6 Christie \
    Roadster S+20K 3-chip DLP®
projectors for the live video projection.
The expansive stage was comprised of a 54 x 20 foot curved screen creating a seamless back projection
surface to project HD video content synchronized in real-time with live camera shots and special effects
during the performance. Two towers of triple stacked Christie Roadster S+20K projectors produced a
combined 120,000 ANSI lumens of brightness to display the high definit\
ion video imagery and live mixes
of Alicia Keys and her musicians and dancers.
The technical design and video elements of the set were created by VYV Corporation, a staging-dressing
company based in Montreal, QC. For Katie Couric’s debut on CBS, the network
wanted a new set that employed multiple display
    technologies with different configurations,
resolutions and formats. Among the various
screen formats used, Video Vision created a
    16 x 9 rear-projection screen located behind
Couric, that was illuminated by a Christie
    Roadster S+12K projector.

Every Spyder frame model has a simple code
    to identify the capability.
The first number defines the series, 200 or 300, the
second number is the amount of universal inputs
and the third number is the amount of outputs.
Using a Spyder 353 as an example:
    3 – 300 series
    5 – five universal inputs
    3 – three universal outputs

    Vista URS
Think of the Christie Vista URS as the
    anything-in, anything-out matrix switcher
    that processes as it routes.
The URS handles any input-output combination
of computer and video formats with ease,
    including analog/digital, interlaced/progressive,
and high/low resolution. With built-in integrated
source monitoring and sophisticated keying, the
URS accepts sources that can be a mix of analog
composite to digital 4K and seamlessly routes
them to 8 outputs that natively support any
    destination display.
The URS performs all the processing to match
the source to the output, including scaling,
aspect ratio, color-space, and frame rate
    conversion repeats. Normally, these functions
    require additional equipment and complex,
restrictive control systems, however with the
URS the entire process is simplified, saving
    you time, money and resources.
    Choose from the following models:
      • Christie Vista URS-1608 (16 inputs/8 outputs)

    • Christie Vista URS-0808* (8 inputs/8 outputs)

February 2009: 51st Annual Grammy Awards, Staples Center, Los Angeles. Eight Christie Roadster HD18K
projectors were chosen to feed graphic elements at the 2009 Grammy Awards – from typography and
logos to song-themed images to a curved horizontal band of eight 9 x 16 \
    ft screens stretched across the
main stage. Two Christie Roadster S+16K projectors and one backup unit displayed graphics and IMAG
of the action onstage on a giant 21 x 11 ft vertical screen, which was placed center-stage and above a split
staircase. And, to complete the Grammy’s set, an additional pair of Christie Roadster S+20K projectors
brought the broadcast feed to the Staples Center audience on two 13.5 x 24 ft house sc\
    reens placed
    out of camera range.
