English 11 General Information/Maintenance Environmental information Any unnecessar y packaging has been omitted. We have tried to make the packaging easy to separate into three materials: cardboard (box), polystyrene foam (buffer) and polyethylene (bags, protective foam sheet). Your system consists of materials which can be recycled and reused if disassembled by a specialised company. Please obser ve the local regulations regarding the disposal of packaging materials, exhausted batteries and old equipment. Care and safety information Avoid high temperatures, moisture, water and dust ●Do not expose the system, batteries or discs to humidity, rain, sand or excessive heat (caused by heating equipment or direct sunlight). Always keep disc trays closed to avoid dust buildup on the lens. ●No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the apparatus. ●No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be placed on the apparatus. ●The apparatus shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing. ●Batteries (batter y pack or batteries installed) shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine , fire or the like. ●When the system is switched to Standby mode, it is still consuming some power. To disconnect the system from the power supply completely, remove the AC power plug from the wall socket. Avoid condensation problem ●The lens may cloud over when the player is suddenly moved from cold to warm surroundings, making it impossible to play a disc. Leave the player in the warm environment until the moisture evaporates.Do not block the vents ●Do not operate the system in an enclosed cabinet and allow about 10 cm (4 inches) of free space all around the player for adequate ventilation. 10 cm (4 inches) 10 cm (4 inches)10 cm (4 inches)DVD Micro Hi-Fi System ●The ventilation should not be impeded by covering the ventilation openings with items, such as newspaper s table-cloths, cur tains, etc. Cleaning the cabinet ●Use soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives. Cleaning discs ●To clean a CD, wipe it in a straight line from the center towards the edge using soft and lint-free cloth. A cleaning agent may damage the disc. ●Write only on the printed side of a CDR(W) and only with a soft felt-tipped pen. ●Handle the disc by its edge. Do not touch the surface . Cleaning the disc lens ●After prolonged use, dir t or dust may accumulate at the disc lens. To ensure good playback quality, clean the disc lens with Philips CD Lens Cleaner or any commercially available cleaner. Follow the instr uctions supplied with cleaner. 12 English DB15 CONNECTOR TO MAIN UNIT SPEAKERS 4 AC MAINS ~ 1.000 Connections IMPORTANT! –The type plate is located at the rear of the system. –Before connecting the AC power cord to the wall outlet, ensure that all other connections have been made. –Never make or change any connections with the power switched on. –High voltage! Do not open.You run the risk of getting an electric shock. –The machine does not contain any user- serviceable parts. –Modification of the product could result in hazardous radiation of EMC or other unsafe operation. To avoid overheating of the system, a safety circuit has been built in. Therefore, your system may switch to Standby mode automatically under extreme conditions. If this happens, let the system cool down before reusing it (not available for all ver sions).Speaker (right)Speaker (left) FM antenna AC power cordStep 1: Placing speakers and subwoofer For best possible surround sound, locate your speakers and subwoofer as follows: ●Place the left and right speakers at equal distances from the TV set and at an angle of approximately 45 degrees from the listening position. ●Place the subwoofer on the floor. English 13 Step 3: Antenna connection Connect the supplied FM antenna to the respective terminal. Adjust the position of the antenna for optimal reception. FM Antenna ●For better FM stereo reception, connect an outdoor FM antenna to the FM AERIAL (FM ANTENNA) terminal. Step 4: Connecting TV IMPORTANT! –You only need to make one video connection from the following options, depending on the capabilities of your TV system. –Connect the DVD system directly to the TV. Using Video In jack (CVBS) 1Use the composite video cable (yellow) to connect the systems VIDEO jack to the video input jack (or labelled as A/V In, Video In, Composite or Baseband) on the TV set. 2To hear the sound of this DVD Player through your TV, use the audio cables (white/red-not supplied) to connect LINE OUT (L/R) jacks of the DVD Player to the corresponding AUDIO IN jacks on the TV. Connections Step 2: Connecting speakers and subwoofer 1 Connect the supplied DB15 cable to DVD player’s DB15 CONNECTOR TO SPEAKER jack and the Subwoofer’s DB15 CONNECTOR TO MAIN UNIT jack. ●Fix the two screws on each connector to ensure firm connection. 2Connect the speaker wires to the SPEAKER terminals on the subwoofer, right speaker to R and left speaker to L, coloured (marked) wire to + and black (unmar ked) wire to -. ●Fully inser t the stripped por tion of the speaker wire into the terminal as shown. Notes: –Ensure that the speaker cables are correctly connected. Improper connections may damage the system due to short-circuit. –For optimal sound performance, use the supplied speakers. –Do not connect more than one speaker to any one pair of +/- speaker terminals. –Do not connect speakers with an impedance lower than the speakers supplied. 14 EnglishUsing an accessory RF modulator IMPORTANT! –If your TV set only has a single Antenna In jack (or labelled as 75 ohm or RF In), you will need a RF modulator in order to view the DVD playback via TV. See your electronics retailer or contact Philips for details on RF modulator availability and operations. 1Use the composite cable (yellow) to connect the systems VIDEO jack to the video input jack on the RF modulator. 2Use an RF coaxial cable (not supplied) to connect the RF modulator to your TVs RF jack. Connections Using component Video In jack (Pr Pb Y) ●Use the component video cables (red/blue/ green, not supplied) to connect the system’s PR/ PB/ Y jacks to the corresponding Component video input jacks (or labeled as Pr/Cr Pb/Cb Y or YUV) on the TV set. ●To listen to TV channels through this system, use the audio cables (white/red) to connect AUX IN (L/R) jacks to the corresponding AUDIO OUT jacks on the TV set. 1.000 Using Scart jack 1Use the scar t cable (not supplied) to connect the system’s TV SCART OUT jack to the corresponding SCART input jacks on the TV set. 1.000 TO TV TO TV 2To listen to TV channels through this system, use the scar t cable (not supplied) to connect the system’s TV SCART OUT jack to the corresponding SCART output jack on the TV set. ● Before star ting operation, press AUX on the remote control to select “AUX” in order to activate the input source. English 15 Connections Step 5: Connecting the power cord IMPORTANT! –Never make or change any connection with the power switched on. After ever ything is connected properly, connect the AC power cord to the system and then to the power outlet. Optional: Connecting additional equipment IMPORTANT! –Some discs are copy-protected. You cannot record the disc through a VCR or digital recording device. –When making connections, make sure the colour of cables matches the colour of jacks. –Always refer to the owners manual of the other equipment for complete connection and usage details. 1.000 AUDIO OUTL R A Listening to the playback of other equipment A Use a cinch cable (not supplied) to connect AUX on the rear panel of the DVD player to the analogue audio out terminals of an external equipment (TV, VCR, Laser Disc player, DVD player or CD Recorder). Before star ting operation, press SOURCE on the front panel to select AUX or press AUX on the remote in order to activate the input source. Note: –If you are connecting equipment with a mono output (a single audio out terminal), connect it to the AUX left terminal. Alternatively, you can use a “single to double” cinch cable (the output sound still remain mono). 1.000 AUDIO INL RVIDEO INL B Using the VCR for recording DVDs B Connect one of the systems VIDEO OUT jacks to the corresponding VIDEO IN jack and LINE OUT (R/L) jacks to the AUDIO IN jacks on the VCR. This will allow you to make analogue stereo (two channel, right and left) recordings. Connecting a USB device or memory card By connecting a USB mass storage device (including USB flash memor y, USB flash players or memor y cards) to the system, you can enjoy the devices stored music through the powerful speakers of the system. ●Inser t the USB devices USB plug into the socket on the set. for the devices with USB cables: 1Inser t one plug of the USB cable to the socket on the set. 2Inser t the other plug of the USB cable to the USB output terminal of the USB device. for the memory card: 1Inser t the memor y card into a card reader (not supplied). 2Use a USB cable (not supplied) to connect the card reader into the socket on the set. pg001-pg039_MCD149-12-Eng 2007.9.13, 15:3515
16 English Step 6: Connecting digital audio equipment Recording (digital) Connect the system’s DIGITAL OUT jack to the DIGITAL IN jack on a digital recording device (DTS-Digital Theater System compatible, with a Dolby Digital decoder, for example). English 17 Controls Controls on the system 1 DBB –enables or disables bass enhancement. 2DSC –selects different types of preset sound equalizer settings. 3TUNING à / á Tuner .................... searches for a radio station Disc ....................... fast searches backward/forward in a disc at different speeds. 4ECO POWER/STANDBY-ON B –switches the system on or to Eco-power standby /normal standby mode. 5ÉÅ Disc ....................... star ts or interrupts disc playback Tuner .................... activates the plug and play function SOURCE –selects the respective sound source: DISC, USB, TUNER (FM), or AUX. ¡ / ™ Disc ....................... press to skip to the previous/ next chapter/title/track. Tuner .................... selects a preset radio station 9 –stops disc playback or erases a program. 6iR Sensor –point the remote control towards this sensor. 7OPEN/CLOSE –opens or closes the disc door. 8PROGRAM Tuner .................... program the favourite stations. Tuner. .................... press and hold to star t automatic preset programming. Disc/USB ............ program the favourite tracks. 9MODE –selects various repeat/shuffle play modes (For VCD with PBC feature, PBC must be turned off.) 0VOLUME +/- –adjusts the volume upward/downward. Clock –sets the clock time !Display –shows the current status of the set. @USB DIRECT –jack for the external USB mass storage device. Controls on the remote control 1 y –to switch the system on or to Eco-power standby/normal standby mode. 2Numeric Keypad (0-9) –inputs a track/title/chapter number of the disc. 3PROG/ANGLE –VCD/CD/MP3-CD: enters the program menu. –Tuner : programs preset radio stations. –DVD: selects a DVD camera angle. 4 SOURCE –to select the respective sound source: DISC USB, TUNER or AUX. 5 SYSTEM MENU (disc mode only) –to enter or exit the system menu bar. 6DISC MENU (disc mode only) –DVD/VCD: enters or exits the disc contents menu. –VCD2.0: switches the playback control mode on or off . 722/33 Tuner –press to tune to a lower/higher radio frequency gradually. –press and hold, then release the key to star t automatic search for a radio frequency downward/upward. Disc –moves an enlarged picture left/right. –(not for MP3 CD) searches backward/forward in a disc at different speeds. –In DISC mode , to select a movement direction in the disc menu or system menu bar. 18 English Controls 0í/ë –Disc: skips to the previous/next chapter/title/ track. –Tuner : selects a preset radio station. !9 –In DISC mode, to stop playback or clear a program. @2; –In DISC mode, to star t or interrupt playback. #VOL +/- –adjusts the volume upward/downward. –adjusts the hour s and minutes in clock/timer setting mode. $MODE –to select various repeat modes or the shuffle play mode for a disc. %SUBTITLE –selects a subtitle language. ^ SLEEP/TIMER Standby mode *–sets a time for switching on the system automatically. Power-on mode –sets the sleep timer function (auto-off). & LOUD/DBB –enables or disables automatic loudness adjustment. *–enables or disables bass enhancement. *DSC –selects different types of preset sound equalizer settings (ROCK, JAZZ, POP, CLASSIC, or OFF). ( MUTE –to interrupt or resume sound reproduction. ) DISPLAY/CLOCK for disc –displays the disc information on the TV screen. for clock *–sets the system clock. ¡REPEAT A-B –for VCD/CD: to repeat a specific section within the same track. –for DVD: to repeat a specific section in a disc. ™AUDIO for VCD –sets Stereo, Mono-Left or Mono-Right sound mode. for DVD –selects an audio language. £ZOOM –DVD/VCD/Picture CD: enlarges or reduces a picture or active image on the TV screen. ≤GOTO –In DISC mode , to fast search in a disc by entering a time, title, chapter or track. English 19 IMPORTANT! –Make sure to complete the preparation procedures before operating the system. Before using the remote control 1 Pull out the plastic protective sheet. 2Select the source you wish to control by pressing one of the source select keys on the remote control (for example DISC, TUNER). 3Then select the desired function (for example ÉÅ , à , á). Replacing battery (lithium CR2025) into the remote control 1 Press the slot on the batter y compar tment. 2Pull out the batter y compar tment. 3Replace a new batter y and fully inser t the battery compar tment back to the original position. 1 2 3CR2025 CAUTION! Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed of properly. Preparations Step 1: Setting the clock 1 Go to Standby mode. 2Press and hold DISPLAY/CLOCK on the remote control. ➜SET CLOCK is displayed briefly. Then, the hour digits flash on the display screen. 3Press VOLUME +/- on the front panel or VO L +/- on the remote to set the hours. 4Press DISPLAY/CLOCK again. ➜The minute digits flash on the display screen. 5Press VOLUME +/- on the front panel or VO L +/- on the remote to set the minutes. 6Press DISPLAY/CLOCK to confirm the clock setting. Notes: –The clock setting will be erased when the system is disconnected from the power supply. –The system will exit clock setting mode if no button is pressed within 15 seconds. Step 2: Setting video preference IMPORTANT! –Make sure you have completed all the necessary connections. (See Connections-Connecting TV.) Turn on the TV set and set it to the correct Video-In channel. ➜You may go to channel 1 on your TV set, then press the channel button repeatedly until you see the Video In channel. ➜Or, you can use the TV remote control to select different video modes. ➜Or, set TV to channel 3 or 4 if you are using an RF modulator. 20 English Preparations 1In stop mode or during playback, press SYSTEM MENU. 2Press 22/33/5/4 on the remote control to toggle through the functions and select your preferential option. ➜Move to SYSTEM SETUP and press 4. ➜Move to one of the following and press 33. –Setting TV SYSTEM Allows you to select the colour system matching the connected TV set. NTSC –If the connected TV is NTSC system, select this mode. It will change the video signal of a PAL disc and output in NTSC format. PA L –If the connected TV is PAL system, select this mode. It will change the video signal of a NTSC disc and output in PAL format. AUTO –If the connected TV is multi system, select this mode.The output format will be in accordance with the video signal of the disc. –Setting TV TYPE Select the aspect ratio of the TV to be connected. 4:3 PS (Pan and Scan mode ) –If you have a conventional TV set and your DVD is not formatted for widescreen viewing, use this setting. A wide picture is displayed on the whole TV screen with a por tion automatically cut off. 4:3 LB (Letterbox mode ) –If you have a conventional TV set and your DVD is formatted for widescreen viewing, use this setting. A wide picture with bands displayed on the upper and lower por tions of the TV screen. 16:9 (Wide screen mode) –If you have a widescreen TV set, use this setting (you must also set your widescreen TV to “full size”) available on a disc, then the disc’s own preference will be used. Note: The format you select must be available on the disc. If it is not, the setting for TV Type will not affect the picture during playback. To exit the menu Press SYSTEM MENU again. Setting up Progressive Scan feature (for Progressive Scan TV only) The progressive scan display twice the number of frames per seconds than interlaced scanning (ordinar y normal TV system). With nearly double the Ember of lines, progressive scan offers higher picture resolution and quality. IMPORTANT! Before enabling the progressive scan feature, you must ensure: 1) Your TV can accept progressive signals, a progressive scan TV is required. 2) You have connected the DVD player to your TV using Y Pb Pr (see “Connections-Step 4: Connecting TV- Using component Video In jack (Cr Cb Y)”.) 1Turn on your TV. 2Turn off your TV progressive scan mode or turn on interlaced mode (refer to your TV user manual). 3Press STANDBY-ON/ECO POWER B (B on the remote) to turn on the DVD player. 4Select the correct Video Input channel. ➜The DVD background screen appear s on the TV. 5Press SYSTEM MENU. pg001-pg039_MCD149-12-Eng 2007.9.13, 15:3520
