12 English Remote Control (c o n t i n u e d ) Using the remote control A Open the battery compartment. B Insert two batteries type R03 or AAA, following the indications (+-) inside the compartment. C Close the cover. D Point the remote control directly at the remote sensor (iR) on the front panel. E Select the source you wish to control by pressing the DISC/USB, RADIO, TV, AUX/DI or MP3 LINE-IN button on the remote control. F Then select the desired function (for example í, ë). CAUTION! – Remove batteries if they are exhausted or if the remote control is not to be used for a long time. – Never mix batteries (old and new or carbon and alkaline, etc). – Batteries contain chemical substances, they should be disposed of properly.

13 English Basic Connections Step 1: Placing the speakers The Philips Home Theatre System is simple to install. However, proper system placement is critical to ensure an optimum sound experience. A Place the front left and right speakers at equal distances from the TV and at an angle of approximately 45 degrees from the listening position. B Place the centre speaker above the TV or the main unit such that the centre channel’s sound is localised. C Place the rear speakers at normal listening ear level facing each other. D Place the subwoofer at the corner of the room. Otherwise, keep it at least one metre away from the TV. E Place the wireless receiver in between the rear speakers at the back of the room. Face it (with Philips logo) towards the direction of the wireless transmitter which connected to the main unit. Helpful Hints: – The placement diagram shown here is only a guideline that provides great system performance. You may fi nd other placement choices that are more suitable for your room layout that provide the sound experience you enjoy. – To avoid magnetic interference, never position the front speakers too close to your TV. – The rear speakers are labelled as REAR LEFT or REAR RIGHT. – The front speakers are labelled as FRONT LEFT or FRONT RIGHT. – For speaker setting, see ‘Getting Started - Setting the speakers’ channel’. 14 English Step 2: Connecting the wireless transmitter z Connect the wireless transmitter to the WIRELESS TRANSMITTER socket at the rear of the main unit. Note: To remove the wireless transmitter from the main unit, press at the sides and pull out. Step 3: Connecting the rear speakers to wireless receiver z Connect the REAR LEFT and REAR RIGHT speaker cables to the matching sockets at the bottom of the wireless receiver. 15 English Step 4: Connecting subwoofer, front and centre speakers z Connect the rest of the speakers and subwoofer to the matching sockets at the rear of the main unit, Make sure that the colours of the plugs and sockets are matched. Helpful Hint: – To prevent unwanted noise, never place the speakers too close to the main unit, subwoofer, AC power adapter, TV or any other radiation sources. 16 English AUDIO IN WIRELESS TRANSMITTER Step 5: Connecting to TV This connection enables you to view the video playback from this unit. You only need to choose one of the options below to make the video connection. – For a standard TV, follow option 1 or 2 or 3. – For a progressive scan TV, follow option 4. – For a HDMI TV, follow option 5. Helpful Hint: – It is important to connect this unit directly to the TV in order to enjoy optimum video quality. Option 1: Using the Scart socket z Connect the scart cable (supplied) from the SCART socket on the main unit to the corresponding SCART input socket on the TV. Helpful Hint: – With this connection, you can press TV on the remote control to route the TV’s audio to the speakers. Option 2: Using the S-Video jack z Connect an S-video cable (not supplied) from the S-VIDEO socket on the main unit to the S-Video input socket (or labelled as Y/C or S-VHS) on the TV.

17 English AUDIO IN WIRELESS TRANSMITTER Basic Connections (c o n t i n u e d ) Option 4: Connecting to a Progressive Scan TV or component video input The progressive scan video quality is only available when using Y Pb Pr connection and a progressive scan TV is required. It provides superior picture quality when watching DVD movies. A Connect the component video cables (red/ blue/green - not supplied) from the Y Pb Pr sockets on the main unit to the corresponding component video input sockets (or labelled as Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr or YUV) on the TV. B If your TV accepts progressive signals, proceed to chapter ‘Getting Started - Setting up Progressive Scan feature’ for detailed progressive feature setup. Option 5: Connecting to a HDMI- compatible TV HDMI (High Defi nition Multimedia Interface) is a digital interface that allows pure digital video transmission without the loss of image quality. A Connect a HDMI cable (not supplied) from the HDMI OUT on the main unit to the HDMI IN on a HDMI-compatible device (e.g., HDMI TV, HDCP compliant DVI TV). B When you have completed the necessary connections, installation and set-up, see ‘Audio Setup Page and Video Setup Page’ for optimum HDMI audio and video settings. Helpful Hints: – The HDMI is backward compatible with some DVI devices using an appropriate adaptor plug. – If a DVI device is connected, an additional audio cable is required for audio transmission. 18 English AUDIO IN WIRELESS TRANSMITTER 1 2 Step 7: Connecting the power cord After everything is connected properly, connect the AC power cord into the power outlet. The standby LED on the main unit lights up. The wireless indicator “ “ on the wireless transmitter and receiver light up. Note: Turning off to standby mode does not disconnect the unit from mains. Helpful Hints: – Refer to the type plate at the rear or bottom of the product for identifi cation and supply ratings. – Before making or changing any connections, make sure that all the devices are disconnected from the power outlet. Basic Connections (c o n t i n u e d ) Step 6: Connecting the FM and AM/MW antennas A Connect the supplied AM/MW loop antenna to the AM/MW socket. Place the AM/MW loop antenna on a shelf, or attach it to a stand or wall. B Connect the supplied FM antenna to the FM 75 Ω socket. Extend the FM antenna and fi x its ends to the wall. For better FM stereo reception, connect an external FM antenna (not supplied). It may be varied depending on the connected devices. Cable/Satellite Box (rear) A Keep the existing connections between your TV and other devices. B Use the scart cable to connect this unit to your TV. z If your TV does not have double-scart connectors, see ‘Step 2: Connecting to TV’ for other video connection options. C Connect an audio cable (red/white - not supplied) from the AUDIO IN-AUX sockets on the main unit to the AUDIO OUT sockets on the Cable/Satellite Box. z For better quality audio, connect a coaxial cable from the COAXIAL DIGITAL IN socket on the main unit to the COAXIAL output socket on the device.
