Help modeThis explains the recording functions.
Select the desired icon with the joystick to
display an explanation on the screen.
    To exit the help mode
Press the MENU button or select [EXIT].
MagicPixThis allows you to record color subjects in dark locations
to stand out against the background.
≥Minimum required illumination: approx. 2 lx
≥Attach this unit to a tripod, and you can record images free
    from vibration.
≥If it is difficult to focus, adjust the focus manually. (l50)
Soft skin modeThis makes skin colors appear softer for a more attractive
    appearance.
This is more effective if you record a person closely from the
    torso up.
PRE-RECThis allows recording of the pictures and sound to start
approximately 3 seconds before the recording start/stop
    button is pressed.
[ ] appears on the screen and the unit repeats the
update by recording motion pictures for about 3 seconds onto
the built-in memory and then deleting them.
≥Aim this unit at the subject and position it securely.
Press the recording start/stop button to start
    recording.
≥Images and audio are recorded for about 3 seconds before
    pressing the recording start/stop button.
    ≥There is no beep sound.
≥After recording starts, the PRE-REC setting is canceled.
Face detectionWhen a subject is backlit and appears darker, this function
detects the face and automatically adjusts the brightness
and picture quality so that the face is recorded clearly.
In the face detection mode, detected faces appear with frames.
≥Up to 5 frames are indicated. Larger faces and faces nearer to
the center of the screen take preference over others.
≥Faces that do not appear completely on the screen are not
    detected.

    Fade:
≥The thumbnails of scenes recorded using Fade
    in become black (or white).
    Help mode:
≥When the Help mode is used, functions cannot
    be set.
≥When the Help mode is used, motion pictures
and still pictures cannot be recorded.
    MagicPix:
≥Recorded scene is seen as if frames were
    missed.
≥The MagicPix function makes the signal
charging time of CCD up to approximately 30k
longer than usual, so that dark scenes can be
recorded brightly. For this reason, bright dots
that are usually invisible may be seen, but this
    is not a malfunction.
≥If set in a bright place, the screen may become
    washed out for a while.
    Soft skin mode:
≥If the background or anything else in the scene
has colors similar to the skin color, they will
    also be smoothed.
≥If the brightness is insufficient, the effect may
    not be clear.
≥You may not be able to see the face clearly
when recording a distant person. In this case,
cancel Soft Skin mode or zoom in on the face.PRE-REC:
≥When the remaining time left for recording
motion pictures is less than 1 minute, PRE-
    REC cannot be set.
≥After setting PRE-REC, if recording starts in
less than 3 seconds, or while the PRE-REC
indication flashes within about 3 seconds after
initiating the quick start operation, motion
pictures taken 3 seconds before pressing the
recording start/stop button cannot be recorded.
≥When the recording start/stop button is
pressed, image shake and operation sound
    may be recorded.
≥The thumbnail of the scenes recorded using
the PRE-REC function will be the top image of
    the scenes actually recorded.
≥The date indication for scenes recorded using
the PRE-REC function will be the date when
the start/stop button is pressed. Therefore, the
date indication when displaying thumbnails or
during playback may be different from the date
    when the recording actually started.
Self-timerThis is for recording still pictures using the timer. Use this
function to include yourself in the picture.
Press the recording start/stop button, the [Ø]
indication blinks for about 10 seconds and then
    the still picture is recorded.
≥After recording, the self-timer is canceled.
To stop the timer midway through
Press the MENU button. (The self-timer setting is canceled.)

    Face detection:
≥In the following case, faces may not be
    detected in some recording conditions.
    jFaces are not full-faces
    jFaces are tilted
jFaces are extremely bright or dark
    jShadows on faces
jFaces are not completely exposed (for
    instance wearing sunglasses)
jThe size of a face is small on the screen.
    jThe subject moves quickly.
    jWhen there is camera shake.
jWhen the digital zoom is used
    jWhen the unit is tilted
≥In the following cases, the function may not
operate properly even if faces are detected. If
this occurs, turn off this function.
    jNonhuman subjects are recognized as
    faces.
jWhen the brightness or quality cannot be
adjusted clearly since scenes are extremely
dark, or the areas around the faces or the
    background is extremely bright.
≥There is no function to focus preferentially on a
    face that is detected.
≥Since the brightness of the entire image is
adjusted to record faces more vividly,
brightness may change suddenly or images
may flicker under some recording conditions.
≥When the face detection frame disappears due
to zooming, the brightness may change
suddenly or the images may flicker.
