The exposure is set, even if the brightness
    of the subject changes.
Press the [AE LOCK] button when the
aperture value and shutter speed are
    displayed.
Press the [AE LOCK] button once more to
    cancel the AE lock.
Program shift can be set even when AE is
    locked.
The [AE LOCK] button cannot be used
    with manual exposure, motion picture
mode [ ], scene mode or auto mode.
The AE Lock function cannot be used if
you do not press the shutter button
halfway before pressing the [AE LOCK]
    button.∫Exposure
If you press the shutter button halfway
when the exposure is not adequate, the
indication of the aperture value and the
shutter speed turns red. (However, the
aperture value and the shutter speed do
not turn red when the flash is activated.)
The brightness of the screen may differ
from that of recorded pictures. In
particular, when taking pictures in dark
places with slow shutter speed, the
subject looks dark on the screen, but the
    actual picture is bright.
When most of the subjects in the screen
are bright (e.g. blue sky on a clear day,
snowy field, etc.), the recorded pictures
may become dark. In this case,
compensate the exposure value on the
    camera. (P54)
When you press the shutter button, the
LCD monitor may become bright or dark
for a moment. This function allows easy
adjustment of focus and the recorded
    picture will not be affected.
We recommend making sure the clock is
set properly before taking pictures. (P20)
When the time for power save is set (P23),
the camera is automatically turned off if
you do not operate within the set time.
When operating the camera again, press
the shutter button halfway or turn the
    camera off and on.
In some cases, if the distance between
the camera and the subject is beyond the
recordable range when you use the
camera, the picture may not be properly
focused even if the focus indication is lit.

    Taking Pictures in Auto Mode
The settings for those functions which are
easy to make mistakes with are fixed at the
time of purchase allowing pictures to be
    taken with fewer mistakes.
    ∫Auto Mode Settings
In auto mode the following items are fixed
at the time of purchase to prevent mistakes
being made when using the camera. Select [AF] or [AF MACRO] with the focus

    ∫The Backlight Compensation
Backlight is a situation where light comes
from the back of subjects. The subjects
such as people become dark when pictures
are recorded in backlight. If you press 3,
    [ ] (compensating backlight ON
    indication) appears and the backlight
    compensation function is activated. This
    function compensates the backlight by
brightening the whole of the picture.
If you press 3 while [ ] is displayed,
[ ] disappears and the backlight
    compensation function is canceled.
When you use the backlight compensation
function, we recommend using the flash.
If you use the flash when the backlight
    compensation function is activated, the
flash setting is fixed to Forced ON
    [].
Even if the focus switch is set to [AF] , you
can take pictures approaching the subject
at a distance of up to 5 cm (0.16 feet) from
the lens by rotating the zoom ring upmost
to Wide the same as if [AF MACRO] was
    selected.
     The settings for [ASPECT RATIO],
    [PICT.SIZE], [QUALITY] and
[CONVERSION] in auto mode are applied
    to other recording modes.
You cannot use the following functions in

    Taking Close-up Pictures [AF MACRO]
This mode allows you to take close-up
pictures of the subject, e.g. When taking
    pictures of flowers.
You can take pictures approaching the
subject at a distance up to 5 cm (0.16 feet)
from the lens by rotating the zoom ring
    upmost to Wide (1k).
    1Set the focus switch to
    [AF MACRO].
    ∫Focus range
     We recommend using a tripod.
When the subject is close to the camera,
the effective focus range (depth of field) is
    significantly narrowed. Therefore, you will
have difficulty in focusing on the subject if
the distance between the camera and the
subject is changed after focusing on the
    subject.
When the camera lens is at a distance
beyond the available range from the
subject, the subject may not be focused
even if the focus indication lights.
The available flash range is about 30 cm
    (0.98 feet) to 7 m (23.0 feet) (Wide). (This
is applied when you set the ISO sensitivity
    to [AUTO].)

    Taking Pictures with Manual Focus
Use this function when you want to fix the
focus or when the distance between the
lens and the subject is determined and you
do not want to activate the auto focus.
    1Select [MF ASSIST] from the
[SETUP] menu and set it to [MF1]
    or [MF2].
Close the menu by pressing the shutter
button halfway or the [MENU] button
    after finishing the setting.
2Slide the focus switch to [MF] and
rotate the focus ring A to focus
    on the subject.
    3The MF assistance appears on
    the center of the screen.
When you stop rotating the focus ring,
    the MF assistance disappears about
    2 seconds after.
You can also set [MF ASSIST] to [OFF]
    on the [SETUP] menu.

    ∫MF ASSIST
When you rotate the focus ring while
setting [MF ASSIST] to [MF1] or [MF2], the
MF assistance is activated and the screen
is enlarged. It allows you to focus on the
    subject more easily.
[MF1]: The center of the screen is
enlarged. You can adjust the focus
    while determining composition of
    the whole of the screen.
[MF2]: The whole of the screen is
    enlarged. It is convenient for
    adjusting the focus in Wide.
[OFF]: The screen is not enlarged.
The MF assistance disappears in the
    following conditions.
    – When about 2 seconds have passed
after you stop rotating the focus ring
    – When pressing the shutter button
    halfway∫Technique for Manual focus
    1Rotate the focus ring slowly.
    2Rotate it little more.
3Finely focus on the subject with rotating
    the focus ring reversely.
    ∫One shot AF
You can focus on the subject with auto
focus by selecting [MF] with the focus
switch and then sliding down the [FOCUS]
    button.
    This is convenient for prefocus.

    ∫Prefocus
This is a technique to focus on the point to
take pictures in advance when it is difficult
to focus on the subject with auto focus due
to its quick motion. [e.g. [PANNING] (P80)
    in scene mode]
This function is suitable when the distance
between the camera and the subject is
    certain.
    ∫Changing the zoom area
The magnified area can be changed while
the screen is expanded using MF Assist.
This is convenient when you want to
change the focus position to take pictures.
    1Rotate the Focus ring.
    2Press 3/4/2/1 to change the
    expanded area.
     The expansion is canceled after
    approximately 2 seconds.
The following will return the AF area to the
    original position.
    – Changing the Focus switch to [AF] or
    [AF MACRO].
    – Changing the picture size or aspect.
    – Turning the camera off.
You can also record with manual focus in
motion picture mode [ ]. However the
screen is not expanded while recording
    the motion picture.
When you focus on the subject in Wide,
the focus may not be adequate in Tele. In
this case, focus on the subject again.
When setting the manual focus, you
cannot set the continuous AF (P90).
If you rotate the focus ring or zoom
    ring while recording motion pictures,
    recording pictures with audio or
adding audio to recorded pictures, a
    grinding noise may be recorded.

Taking Pictures using the Built-in Flash
When you set the flash, you can take
pictures using the built-in flash according to
    the recording condition.
    ATo open the flash
    Slide the [ OPEN] lever.
    BTo close the flash
Press the flash until it clicks.
Be sure to close the flash when not in use.
The flash setting is fixed to Forced OFF
[ ] while the flash is closed.
    ∫Switching to the appropriate flash
    setting
For the selectable flash settings, refer to
    “Available flash settings by recording
    mode” on P50.
    :AUTO
    The flash is automatically activated
    according to the recording condition.
    : AUTO/Red-eye reduction
    The flash is automatically activated
    according to the recording condition.
It reduces the red-eye phenomenon (eyes
of the subject appear red in the picture) by
    triggering the flash before actually
recording the picture. After that, the flash is
activated for actual recording again. The flash is activated twice. The first
flash is activated only for a preparation
of actual recording. The subject should
not move until the second flash is
    finished.
Use this when you take pictures of
    people in low lighting conditions.
    : Forced ON
The flash is activated every time regardless
    of the recording condition.
Use this when your subject is back-lit
    or under fluorescent light.
    : Forced ON/Red-eye reduction
The flash setting is set to Forced ON/
Red-eye reduction only when you set
to [CANDLE LIGHT] (P76) and [PARTY]
    (P77) in scene mode.
    : Slow sync./Red-eye reduction
When you take a picture with a dark
    background landscape, this feature makes
the shutter speed slow when the flash is
activated, so that the dark background
    landscape will become bright.
    Simultaneously it reduces the red-eye
    phenomenon.
Use this when you take pictures of
people in front of a dark background.
    : Forced OFF
The flash is not activated in any recording
    condition.
Use this when you take pictures in
places where the use of the flash is not
    permitted.
