Basic - 1 - About the flash • When [q] is selected, [w], [e] or [r] is set depending on the type of subject and brightness. • When [e] or [r] is set, the flash is activated twice. Settings in AUTO Scene mode Only the following functions can be set in this mode. [REC] menu– [PICTURE SIZE] (P70)/[BURST] (P76)/[COLOR MODE] (P77) The settings which can be set are different from when other recording modes are used.[SETUP] menu– [CLOCK SET]/[WORLD TIME]/[BEEP]/[LANGUAGE] The settings of the following items are fixed. Basic - - Taking Pictures with Your Favorite Settings (Normal Picture Mode) Recording Mode: 1 This mode allows you to take pictures freely as more options are available than Auto Scene Mode [;] (P28). MODE1 Slide the recording/playback switch to [1] and press [MODE]. A Recording/playback switch 2 Press e/r to select [NORMAL PICTURE] and press [MENU/SET].• To change the setting while taking pictures, refer to “Using the [REC] Menu”(P70). 3 Aim the AF area to the point you want to focus on. 4 Press the shutter button B halfway to focus.• The focus indication (green) lights when the subject is focused. • The focus range is 50 cm (1.64 feet) to 7. • If pictures are to be taken at an even closer range, refer to “Taking Close-up Pictures” (P49). 5 Press the shutter button fully (push it in further), and take the picture. • The access indication (P16) lights red when a picture is being recorded on the built-in memory (or the card).

Preventing jitter (camera shake) When the jitter alert [0] appears, use a tripod or the self-timer (P50). • Shutter speed will be slower particularly in the following cases. Keep the camera still from the moment the shutter button is pressed until the picture appears on the screen. We recommend using a tripod. – Slow sync./Red-eye reduction – In [NIGHT PORTRAIT], [NIGHT SCENERY], [PARTY], [CANDLE LIGHT], [STARRY SKY] or [FIREWORKS] in Scene Mode

Basic - - Taking Pictures with the Zoom Recording Mode: ; 1 5 6 Using the optical zoom/ the extended optical zoom (EZ)/ the digital zoom You can make people and subjects appear closer with the optical zoom, and landscapes can be recorded in wide angle. To make subjects appear even closer [maximum of 7.1× (DMC-FS42)/6.4× (DMC-FS4)], set the [PICTURE SIZE] to 5M or less.Even higher levels of magnification are possible when [DIGITAL ZOOM] is set to [ON] in [REC] menu. To make subjects appear closer use (Tele) Rotate the zoom lever towards Tele. To make subjects appear further away use (Wide) Rotate the zoom lever towards Wide.

How the extended optical zoom worksWhen you set the picture size to [C] (3 million pixels), the 10M (10.1 million pixels) (DMC-FS42)/8M (8.1 million pixels) (DMC-FS4) CCD area is cropped to the center 3M (3 million pixels) area, allowing a picture with a higher zoom effect. Note • The Digital zoom does not operate in Auto Scene Mode [;] • The indicated zoom magnification is an approximation. • “EZ” is an abbreviation of “Extended Optical Zoom”. • The optical zoom is set to Wide (1 ×) when the camera is turned on. • If you use the zoom function after focusing on the subject, focus on the subject again. • The lens barrel extends or retracts according to the zoom position. Take care not to interrupt the motion of the lens barrel while the zoom lever is rotated. • When using the Digital zoom, we recommend using a tripod and the self-timer (P50) for taking pictures. • The following cases cannot be used in Extended Optical Zoom: – [HIGH SENS.], [HI-SPEED BURST] and [FLASH BURST]/Motion Picture Mode • The following cases cannot be used in Digital zoom: – [SPORTS], [BABY1]/[BABY2], [PET], [HIGH SENS.], [HI-SPEED BURST] and [FLASH BURST] in [SCENE MODE]

Basic - - Playing Back Pictures (Normal Playback Mode) Playback Mode: 9 A 1 Slide the recording/playback switch A to [5].• Normal playback is set automatically in the following cases: – When the mode was switched to the Playback Mode. – When the camera was turned on while the recording/playback switch was at [5]. 2 Press w/q to select the picture. BC w: Play back the previous pictureq: Play back the next picture • Speed of picture forwarding/rewinding changes depending on the playback status. Fast forwarding/Fast rewinding Press and hold w/q during playback. • The file number B and the picture number C only change one by one. Release w/q when the number of the desired picture appears to play back the picture. • If you keep pressing w/q, the number of pictures forwarded/rewound increases.

Basic - - Using the playback zoom Rotate the zoom lever towards [7] (T) to enlarge the picture. A 1"2"4"8"16 • When you rotate the zoom lever towards [6] (W) after enlarging the picture, the magnification becomes lower. • When you change the magnification, the zoom position indication A appears for about 1 second, and the position of the enlarged section can be moved by using e/r/w/q. • The more a picture is enlarged, the more its quality deteriorates. • When you move the position to be displayed, the zoom position indication appears for about 1 second. Note • This camera complies with the DCF standard “Design rule for Camera File system” established by JEITA “Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association” and with Exif “Exchangeable Image File Format”. Files which do not comply with the DCF standard cannot be played back. • You cannot play back the audio of still pictures with audio recorded on other equipment. • The lens barrel retracts about 15 seconds after switching from the Recording Mode to the Playback Mode. • The Playback zoom may not operate if pictures have been recorded with other equipment. • The Playback zoom cannot be used when playing back motion pictures.

Basic - 0 - Deleting Pictures Playback Mode: 9 z Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Pictures on the built-in memory or the card, which are being played back, will be deleted. To delete a single picture DISPLAY 1 Select the picture to be deleted, and then press [4]. 2 Press w to select [YES] and then press [MENU/SET].
