    Making a recording
    ARecording CDs
    Preparations:l Insert the CD(s) you want to record. l Press [CD/q/ h] and then [g CLEAR].
    1 Press [PLAY MODE] to select your desired mode.

    2 Press [*/ h REC] to start recording. The CD starts.
    l W h i l e   r e c o r d i n g ,   i f   a   t r a c k   i s   c u t   o f f   i n   t h e   m i d d l e   a t  
    t h e   e n d   o f   t h e   f r o n t   s i d e ,   i t   i s   r e - r e c o r d e d   f r o m   t h e  beginning, on the reverse side. Bl At the end of the reverse side, recording stops and the current track will be interrupted.If the tape finishes before the CDThe CD continues playing. Press [STOP g, -DEMO] to stop it.To record certain tracks1 Program the tracks (è page 16).2 Press [*/ h REC] to start recording.
    CRecording from the radio
    1 Tune to the required station.(è page 10 or 11)
    2  Press [*/ h REC] to start recording.
    To cut an unnecessary part while recording1  Press [*/ h REC] during the unnecessary part. The cassette deck will go into the stop mode.2  P r e s s   [*/  h  R E C ]   t o   r e s u m e   r e c o r d i n g   a g a i n .  Recording will continue in the same direction as before.
    Note
    When recording an AM broadcast, sound is momentarily interrupted when you start and stop the recording.
    To reduce noise while recording an AM broadcast (Beat proof function)Press and hold [PLAY MODE] while recording.Every time you press the button:BP1  BP2Select the position where there is less noise.
    Common recording operations
    To stop recordingPress [STOP g, -DEMO].When recording CDs, the CD also stops.
    To stop recording temporarily
    Press [*/ h REC].To resume recording, press [*/ h REC].

    Using the sound quality settings
    By remote control only
    APreset EQ and Manual EQ
    You can choose one of four types of sound quality with Preset EQ or enhances the bass and treble effect of the sound with Manual EQ.
    1 Press and hold [SOUND] to select "MANUAL EQ" or "PRESET EQ". 
     Each time you press and hold the button: MANUAL EQ  PRESET EQ
    2  Press [SOUND] to select a setting. Each time you press the button: For "PRESET EQ" HEAVY   CLEAR   SOFT   VOCAL

    For MP3/WMA onlyDisc recorded at 32kHz, 44.1kHz or 48kHzT h i s   f e a t u r e   r e p r o d u c e s   t h e   f r e q u e n c i e s   l o s t   d u r i n g  recording to give you a sound closer to the original.
    Press [RE-MASTER]. (The button light is on.)
    BUsing the “live” effect (SURROUND)
    Press [SURROUND] to add natural width and 
    depth to the stereo sound.  ("  " indicator will 
    appear.)l When listening through headphones, the effect is less discernible than through the unit’s speakers.l If interference in FM stereo reception increases, cancel the surround sound effect.
    CUsing an external unit
    See page 7 for external unit connection.1  Press [AUX]. The unit comes on.2  For listening: Proceed to step 3. For recording: Press [*/ h REC] (recording starts).3  Start playback from the external source. (For details, refer to the external unit’s instruction manual.)
    DListening with headphones
    Reduce the volume level, and connect the headphones.Plug type: 3.5 mm stereo.
    Note
    Avoid listening for prolonged periods of time to prevent hearing damage.

    AAuto-off function
    When CD or tape is selected as the sourceTo save power, the unit turns off if it is left unused for 10 minutes.This function does not work if the source is tuner or AUX.
    Press and hold [SLEEP, -AUTO OFF].
    "AUTO OFF" is shown on the display.
    To cancelP r e s s   a n d   h o l d   [ S L E E P ,   - A U T O   O F F ]   a g a i n   t o   c l e a r  "AUTO OFF" from the display.For your referenceThe setting is maintained even if the unit is turned off."AUTO OFF" disappears from the display if either tuner or AUX is selected as the source but continues to function normally.
    BTurning the demo function off
    I f   t h e   c l o c k   h a s   n o t   b e e n   s e t ,   a   d e m o n s t r a t i o n   o f   t h e  display is shown when the unit is switched to standby mode.This function is set to on at the time of purchase.
    During standby mode
    Press and hold [STOP g, -DEMO] until "NO 
    DEMO" is displayed.
    The display changes each time the button is held down.NO DEMO (off)  DEMO ON (demo on)
    To show a demonstration of the displayPress and hold [STOP g, -DEMO] until a demonstration of the display is shown.
    Note
    l You cannot turn demo function off when the unit is on.l DEMO function cannot be turned on when Dimmer is on.
    Convenient functions
    CTo dim the display panel
    Use this when you are going to sleep or any other time you would prefer the panel to be dimmer.
    Press [DIMMER].
    The display dims and all lights are turned off except for [AC IN] indicator.
    To cancelPress [DIMMER] again.
    DTo mute the volume
    This feature is convenient when you have a telephone call, etc.
    Press [MUTING].
    Press the button again to cancel. (“MUTING” goes out.)Muting can also be cancelled by lowering the volume all the way to “--dB”.When the system is turned off, the muting operation will be automatically cancelled.

    Using the timers
    By remote control only
    Using the play/record timer
    The timer has two functions. It can be set to on at a certain time to wake you up, or it can be set to record from the radio or from the aux source.The play timer cannot be used in combination with the record timer.Preparations:Turn the unit on and set the clock (è page 9).l For the play timer, prepare the music source you want to listen to; tape, CD, radio or aux, and set the volume.l For the record timer, insert the cassette and tune to the radio station (è page 10) or select the aux source (è page 26).
    1  Press [CLOCK/TIMER] to select the timer function.
     Every time you press the button:   CLOCK  zPLAY  zREC
            Original display 
    zPLAY to set the play timerzRECto set the record timer
    Setting the start and finish times
    2  Within 7 seconds Press [u 2/REW] or [i 1/FF] to select the 
    finishing time.
     è [CLOCK/TIMER]
    3  Within 7 seconds Press [u 2/REW] or [i 1/FF] to select the 
    starting time.
     è [CLOCK/TIMER]
     The start and finish times are now set.
    Turning the timer on
    4  Press [zPLAY/REC]. Every time you press the button:   zPLAY    zREC
         no display (off) 
    zPLAY to turn the play timer onzRECto turn the record timer on
     The indicator doesn’t appear if the start and finish times or the clock haven’t been set.
    5 Press [8] to turn the unit off. The unit must be off for the timers to operate. Play timer: Play will start in the set condition at the set time with volume increasing gradually to the set level. Record timer: The unit comes on 30 seconds before the set time with the volume muted.
    To cancel the timerPress [zPLAY/REC] to clear the timer indicators from the display. The timer comes on at the set time everyday if the timer is on.To change the play/record times (when unit is on)Do steps 1, 2, 3, and 5.To change the source or volume (when unit is on)1 Press [zPLAY/REC] to clear the timer indicator from the display.2 Make changes to the source or volume.3 Do steps 4 to 5.(Continued on next page)

    Using the timers
    By remote control only
    AUsing the play/record timer
    To check settingsWhile the unit is on and the “zPLAY” or “zREC” indicator is on, press [CLOCK/TIMER] so the incicator appears on the display.The settings are displayed in the following order:
    For play timer For record timer1. Play start time1. Recording start time2. Play finish time2. Recording finish time3. Play source3. Recording source4. Playback volume
    You can check the settings even when the system is OFF by pressing [CLOCK/TIMER] twice.
    To enjoy the desired source after the timer setting is completedThe volume level (for play timer) and music source are stored in the timer memory and the timer will start in these presetconditions. However, the CD numbers do not get stored in the timer memory.1 After step 4, start playing the desired source.2 R e s e t   t h e   C D   n u m b e r s   i f   y o u   h a v e   c h a n g e d   a n y   o f  them, confirm that a CD or cassette is inserted, then press [f] to put the unit on standby.
    Note
    l I f   y o u   t u r n   t h e   u n i t   o f f   a n d   o n   a g a i n   w h i l e   a   t i m e r   i s  functioning, the finish time setting will not be activated.l If the unit is on, the timer will not function. The unit must be in the standby mode.l I f   A U X   i s   s e l e c t e d   a s   t h e   s o u r c e ,   w h e n   t h e   t i m e r  comes on, the system turns on and engages AUX as the source. If you want to playback or record from a connected unit, set the other unit’s timer to the same time. (See the other unit’s instruction manual.)
    BUsing the sleep timer
    Set the unit to stop and turn off after a certain time.
    While enjoying the desired source:
    Press [SLEEP] to select the desired time.
    Every time you press the button:  SLEEP 90  SLEEP 30  SLEEP 60  SLEEP 120 
            SLEEP OFF 
    To cancel the sleep timerPress [SLEEP] to select “SLEEP OFF”.To confirm the remaining time (only while unit is ON)Press [SLEEP].The remaining time is shown for about 5 seconds.To change the time remaining during operationPress [SLEEP] to show the remaining time, and then press[SLEEP] to select the desired time.
    Note
    l  The sleep timer turns OFF automatically the moment you attempt to edit-record a CD.l  The play and sleep timer or the record and sleep timer can be used together. T h e   s l e e p   t i m e r   a l w a y s   h a s   p r i o r i t y .   B e   s u r e   n o t   t o  overlap timer settings.

    							Troubleshooting guide
    Before requesting service, make the below checks. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, refer to the "Customer Services Directory" on page 27 if you reside in the U.S.A, or refer to the "Product information" on page 26 if you reside in Canada.  
    Common Problems
    No sound.Turn the volume up.The speaker cords may be shorted. Turn the unit off, check and correct the connections and turn the unit on.  (è page 5)Sound is unfixed, reversed or comes from one speaker only.Check the speaker connections.  (è page 5)
    Humming heard during play.An AC power supply cord or fluorescent light is near the cables. Keep other appliances and leads away from this unit’s cables.“ERROR” is displayed.Incorrect operation performed. Read the instructions and try again.“--:--” appears on the display.You plugged the AC power supply cord in for the first time or there was a power failurerecently.Set the time.  (è page 8)“F61” is displayed.Check and correct the speaker cord connections.  (è page 5)If this does not fix the problem, there is a power supply problem. Consult the dealer.
    Listening to the radio
    Noise is heard.The stereo indicator flickers or doesn’t light.Sound is distorted.
    Use an outdoor antenna.  (è page 6)
    A beat sound is heard.Turn the TV off or separate it from the unit.A low hum is heard during AM broadcast.Separate the antenna from other cables and cords.
    When there is a television set nearby
    The picture on the TV disappears or stripes appear on the screen.The location and orientation of the antenna are incorrect. If you are using an indoor antenna, change to an outdoor antenna.  (è page 6)The TV antenna wire is too close to the unit. Separate the antenna wire of the TV set from the unit.
    Using the cassette deck
    Poor quality sound.Clean the heads.Recording is not possible.If the erasure prevention tabs have been removed, cover the holes with adhesive tape.
    Playing discs
    The display is wrong or play won’t start.The disc may be upside down. Wipe the disc.Replace the disc if it is scratched, warped, or non-standard.Condensation may have formed inside the unit due to a sudden change intemperature. Wait about an hour for it to clear and try again.The total number of tracks displayed differs each time the same disc is inserted.Unusual sound is heard.
    The disc may be scratched, or its data may be defective. Replace the disc.
    CD-RW cannot be read.The disc was incompletely formatted. Use the recording equipment to fully format the disc before recording.“VBR-” is displayed instead of the remaining play time.The unit cannot display the remaining play time for variable bit rate (VBR) tracks
    “TAKE OUT/DISC” appears on the display.There is a problem with the disc mechanism. (A power failure may have occurred.)The tray will open automatically. Remove the disc from the tray, and after ensuring there is no disc in the tray, close it. The unit will make the disc changing noises for a few moments and then it should operate normally.
    The remote control
    Remote control doesn’t work.Check that the batteries are inserted correctly.  (è page 4)Replace the batteries if they are worn.
