Recording operations 21 RQT7364 Before recording • Only normal position tapes are recommended. • Remove tabs to prevent recording. To record, cover tabs as shown. • Volume and sound quality during playback have no effect on recording. To erase a recorded sound 1Press [TAPE 3] and then [STOP 7, –DEMO]. 2Insert the recorded cassette with the tape facing out. 3Press [¶/8 REC]. Preparatory steps Wind up the leader tape to begin recording immediately. Preparation:Press [TAPE 3] and then [STOP 7, –DEMO] to select tape as the source. Press [OPEN 0], insert a cassette with the tape facing out. Close the lid by hand. ARecording the radio Preparation: Do the preparatory steps as above. 1Tune to the required station.(\ page 9) 2Press [¶/8 REC] to start recording. BAuto-off function To save power, the unit turns off if it is left unused for 10 minutes. This function works only if CD or tape is selected as the source. A Using the play/record timer To check the settings when the unit is on Press [SHIFT] + [CLOCK/TIMER] until “ ˚ ˚˚ ˚ ˚PLAY” or “ ˚ ˚˚ ˚ ˚REC” appears. Two seconds after “ ˚ ˚˚ ˚ ˚PLAY” or “ ˚ ˚˚ ˚ ˚REC” appears, the settings are displayed in the following order: Timer Setting display Play timer Play start time → Play finish time → Play source → Playback volume. Record timer Recording start time → Recording finish time → Recording source. When the unit is off, press [SHIFT] + [CLOCK/TIMER] to check the settings. To enjoy the desired source after the timer setting is completed. The volume level (for play timer) and music source are stored in the timer memory and the timer will start in these preset conditions. However, the CD numbers do not get stored in the timer memory. 1. After step 4 on the previous page, start playing the desired source. 2. Reset the CD numbers if you have changed any of them, confirm that a CD or cassette is inserted, then press [y] to put the unit on standby. Notes •If you turn the unit off and on again while a timer is functioning, the finish time setting will not be activated. •If the unit is on, the timer will not function. The unit must be in the standby mode. •If AUX is selected as the source, when the timer comes on, the system turns on and engages AUX as the source. If you want to playback or record from a connected unit, set the other unit’s timer to the same time. (See the other unit’s instruction manual.) B Using the sleep timer Using the sleep timer to turn off the unit automatically. Press [SLEEP] to select: SLEEP 30 SLEEP 60 SLEEP 90 SLEEP 120 SLEEP OFF To cancel, Press [SLEEP] to select “SLEEP OFF”. To display the remaining time, press [SLEEP]. Press [SLEEP] again to change your desired time. Notes •The play and sleep timer or the record and sleep timer can be used together. •The sleep timer always has priority. Notes •Preset EQ cannot be used together with Super Sound EQ. •Changes to sound quality do not affect recordings. BEnhancing the sound quality Press [S.SOUND EQ].The button light is on. Press the button again to cancel.The button light goes out. Using the “live” effect (SURROUND) Press [SHIFT] + [SURROUND] to add natural width and depth to the stereo sound. “ ” indicator will appear. To cancel Press [SHIFT] + [SURROUND] to clear the “ ” indicator. •When listening through headphones, the effect is less discernible than through the unit’s speakers. •If interference in FM stereo reception increases, cancel the surround sound effect. CUsing an external unit 1Press [AUX]. 2For listening: Proceed to step 3. For recording: Press [¶/8 REC] (recording starts). 3Start playback from the external source. (For details, refer to the external unit’s instruction manual.) Listening with headphones Reduce the volume level, and connect the headphones. Plug type: 3.5 mm stereo. Note Avoid listening for prolonged periods of time to prevent hearing damage. A B S. Reference 26 RQT7364 Troubleshooting guide Before requesting service, make the following checks. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, refer to the “Customer Services Directory” on page 27 if you reside in the U.S.A., or refer to the “Product information” on page 4 if you reside in Canada. Reference pages are shown as black circled numbers. Common Problems No sound. Sound is unfixed, reversed or comes from one speaker only. Humming heard during play.Turn the volume up. The speaker cords may be shorted. Turn the unit off, check and correct the connections and turn the unit on. 6 Check the speaker connections. 6 An AC power supply cord or fluorescent light is near the cables. Keep other appliances and cords away from this unit’s cables. “ERROR” is displayed. “– –:– –” appears on the display. “F61” is displayed.Incorrect operation performed. Read the instructions and try again. You plugged the AC power supply cord in for the first time or there was a power failure recently. Set the time. 8 Check and correct the speaker cord connections. 6 If this does not fix the problem, there is a power supply problem. Consult the dealer. Noise is heard. The stereo indicator flickers or doesn’t light. Sound is distorted. A beat sound is heard. A low hum is heard during AM broadcast.Use an outdoor antenna. 6 Turn the TV off or separate it from the unit. Separate the antenna from other cables and cords. Listening to the radio The picture on the TV disappears or stripes appear on the screen.The location and orientation of the antenna are incorrect. If you are using an indoor antenna, change to an outdoor antenna. 6 The TV antenna wire is too close to the unit. Separate the antenna wire of the TV set from the unit. When there is a television set nearby If the erasure prevention tabs have been removed, cover the holes with adhesive tape. - Recording is not possible. Using the cassette deck Remote control doesn’t work.Check that the batteries are inserted correctly. 5 Replace the batteries if they are worn. The remote control Playing discs The display is wrong or play won’t start. The total number of tracks displayed differs each time the same disc is inserted. Unusual sound is heard. CD-RW cannot be read. “VBR–” is displayed instead of the remaining play time. “TAKE OUT/DISC” appears on the display.The disc may be upside down. # Wipe the disc. Replace the disc if it is scratched, warped, or non-standard. Condensation may have formed inside the unit due to a sudden change in temperature. Wait about an hour for it to clear and try again. The disc may be scratched, or its data may be defective. Replace the disc. The disc was incompletely formatted. Use the recording equipment to fully format the disc before recording. The unit cannot display the remaining play time for variable bit rate (VBR) tracks. There is a problem with the disc mechanism. (A power failure may have occurred.) The tray will open automatically. Remove the disc from the tray, and after ensuring there is no disc in the tray, close it. The unit will make the disc changing noises for a few moments and then it should operate normally.
