Before requesting service, make the following checks. If you are in doubt about any of the check points, or if the solutions indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, refer to the “Customer Services Directory” on page 7 if you reside in the U.S.A., or refer to the “Product information” on page 7 if you reside in Canada.
No play.The disc isn’t correctly set.The disc is scratched or dirty. (Tracks skipped.) There is moisture on the lens. Wait for about an hour and then try again.

MP3 cannot be read.You may not be able to play MP3 if you have copied a multi-session disc that has no data between sessions.When creating a multi session disc, it is necessary to close the session.The amount of data on the disc is too small. Set the amount of data to greater than approximately 5 MB.

Sound is unfixed, reversed or comes 
from one speaker only.Check the speaker connections. (➡ page 3)•
No sound or there is a lot of noise.
Noise may occur when playing MP3 if recording quality is poor.Keep this unit away from mobile telephones if the interference is apparent.Turn the volume up.Switch the unit off, determine and correct the cause, then switch the unit on. Causes include shorting of the positive and negative speaker wires, straining of the speakers through excessive volume or power, and using the unit in a hot environment.

Humming heard during play. An AC power supply cord or fluorescent light is near the cords. Keep other appliances and cords away from this unit’s cables.•
A beat sound or noise is heard while receiving a radio broadcast.Switch the TV or other audio player off or separate it from the unit.Switch off the portable audio player connected to “MUSIC PORT”.••
A low hum or noise is heard during AM broadcasts.Keep the antenna away from other cables and cords.Keep the AM antenna away from the unit.••The picture on the television near the set disappears or stripes appear on the screen.
The location and orientation of the antenna are incorrect. The television antenna wire is too close to the unit. Separate the antenna wire of the television from the unit.••
Remote control  doesn’t work.Check that the batteries are inserted correctly. (➡ page 2)Replace the batteries if they are worn.••

Aim at the sensor, avoiding obstacles, at a maximum range of 7 m directly in front of the unit.Operation can be affected by strong light sources, such as direct sunlight, and the glass doors on cabinets.

Keep fingers away from the CD lid when it is closing to avoid possible minor injury.
Label must face outward. Press until you hear it click into place.
 Press [CD q/h] to start play. Adjust the volume.
Be sure to press the [; OPEN/CLOSE] button to open and close the CD lid.Damage may occur if the lid is forced closed.During standby, if the CD is ready in the unit, the unit comes on and play begins. (One touch play)

Conserving powerThe unit consumes 2.0 W even it is turned off with [POWER 8]. To save power when the unit is not to be used for a long time, unplug it from the household AC outlet. 
Remember to reset the radio stations and any other memory 
items before using the unit again.
If the unit is left unplugged for longer than approximately two 
weeks, all settings will revert to the factory settings.

Display function
The  unit can play MP3, a method of compressing audio without overly hurting audio quality.
When creating MP3 files to play on this unit Maximum number of tracks and albums: 999 tracks and 256 albums.Compatible compression rate: Between 64 kbps and 320 kbps (stereo). 
     128 kbps (stereo) is recommended.Disc formats: ISO9660 level 1 and level 2 (except for extended formats).The time for reading TOC depends on the number of the tracks, the folders or folder structures.
Limitations on MP3This unit is compatible with multi-session but if there are a lot of sessions it takes more time for play to start. Keep the number of sessions to a minimum to avoid this. This unit cannot play files recorded using packet write.If the disc includes both MP3 and normal audio data (CD-DA), the unit plays the type recorded in the inner part of the disc. If the disc includes both MP3 and other types of audio data (e.g. WMA or WAV), the unit plays only the MP3.Depending on how you create MP3 files, they may not play in the order you numbered them or may not play at all.

Memory preset
You can preset up to 20 FM channels and up to 12 AM channels.Preparation: Press [TUNER/BAND] to select “FM” or “AM”.

Note on CD-R and CD-RWThis unit can play CD-R and CD-RW recorded with CD-DA or MP3. Use an audio 
recording disc for CD-DA and finalize* it when you finish recording.
The unit may not be able to play some discs due to the condition of the recording.* A process performed after recording that enables CD-R/CD-RW players to play audio CD-R and CD-RW.
CautionChoose discs with this mark:     Do not:   •  use irregularly shaped CDs.attach extra labels and stickers.use CDs with labels and stickers that are coming off or with adhesive exuding from under labels and stickers.attach scratch-proof covers or any other kind of accessory.write anything on the CD.clean CDs with liquids (Wipe with a soft, dry cloth.).
Note about using a DualDiscsThe digital audio content side of a DualDiscs does not meet the technical 
specifications of the Compact Disc Digital Audio  (CD-DA) format, so play may not be 
possible.
Do not use a DualDiscs in this unit as it may not be possible to insert it correctly and it may get scratched or scraped.

Allocation settings
Each country allocates broadcast bands according to their particular system.You can change the FM steps. The step is factory-set to 0.2 MHz, but you can change it to receive broadcasts allocated 0.1 MHz steps.Any FM/AM frequencies preset in channels will be changed by this procedure.Preset them again.  Select the  XM  / AM band  ] with [TUNER/BAND]  on the unit.  Press and hold [TUNER/BAND] on the unit.
After a few seconds the display changes to show the current minimum frequency.
Continue to hold the button down. The minimum frequency changes and the step is changed.To return to the original step, repeat the above steps.
The preset memory will be initialized when you change your frequency step.
To improve reception
FM
Receive the radio stations after connecting the antenna. Then attach the antenna cord to a wall or pillar where there is good reception.
AM
Change the direction and location of the antenna.
To improve FM sound qualityPress and hold [PLAY MODE] to display “MONO”.          
To cancelPress and hold [PLAY MODE] again until “MONO” disappears.MONO is also canceled if the frequency is changed.Turn off “MONO” for normal listening.••
Press [PLAY MODE] to select the desired mode.
During random play, you cannot skip to previous track.•

You can confirm your XM Satellite Radio ID necessary for activating XM Satellite Radio as follows.
 Connect the XM Connect & Play antenna, or XM Mini-Tuner and Home Dock. (➡ page 3) Press [TUNER/BAND] repeatedly to select “XM”.
  “ANTENNA” blinks on the display if no XM antenna is detected.
 Press [0] to select channel “0” to display the Radio ID.
  “RADIO ID” is indicated in the display briefly, followed by an 8-digit alphanumeric ID.
 Record your XM Satellite Radio ID here for reference:
  To avoid ambiguity, the letters I, O, S and F are not used in the ID.  There is no sound output when “RADIO ID” is displayed.
XM channel 0 is for “RADIO ID” and channel 1 is for “PREVIEW”.
You can still listen to the preview channels XM1, XM174 and XM247 without activating the XM services.

Displaying the XM Satellite Radio ID
The main unit has a signal strength indicator function that allows you to optimize the XM signal reception. Press [TUNER/BAND] repeatedly to select “XM”.
  Ensure the antenna is connected. (➡ page 3) Press and hold [DISPLAY] until the XM signal status is displayed.
        Signal strength:
               4 (strong)
               3 (good)
               2 (marginal)
               1 (weak)
               0 (no signal) 
 Position the antenna for the best possible satellite signal reception.
  As you position the antenna, the display changes depending on the signal strength.
  If the satellite signal is weak or not available, you can optimize for the terrestrial 
signal (where available). Press [DISPLAY] to return to the previous display.
Tips for optimizing reception
To prevent interference with wireless equipment, place the antenna away from other 
equipment that emits radio waves (such as radio equipment and microwave ovens).Place the antenna near a south-facing window with an unobstructed view of the sky for the best satellite signal reception.Refer also to the operating instructions of your XM Connect & Play antenna, or XM Mini-Tuner and Home Dock.

Positioning the XM Connect & Play antenna, or XM Mini-
Tuner and Home Dock for optimal reception
 Press [TUNER/BAND] repeatedly to select “XM”. Press [PLAY MODE] to select “MANUAL”.
  Each time you press the button:
    MANUAL     PRESET
 Press [2/u] or [1/i] to select a channel.
  Press and hold [2/u] or [1/i] to scan through quickly. ORPress the numbered buttons for direct access to an XM channel.
  For two-digit channel, press [≧10] once, and then the two digits.
  For three-digit channel, press [≧10] twice, and then the three digits.
You can enter a channel number between 0 to 255.If you enter a number that is not valid or selected an unauthorized channel “XM - - -” is displayed and the previous channel is selected.If you change the playmode for XM, FM, and AM playmodes are also set to the newly select playmode, vice versa.

Manual Tuning
XM channels are organized into categories such as Rock, Classical, Country and Dance to make browsing and selecting broadcast content easier. Press [PLAY MODE] to select “MANUAL”. Press [XM CATEGORY < or >] to select a category.
  “CAT ON” (CATEGORY ON) is displayed briefly, and then the category of the 
current XM channel flashes on the display.
  Press and hold [XM CATEGORY < or >] to scan through quickly.
 Press [2/u] or [1/i] to select a channel within the category.
  Press and hold [2/u] or [1/i] to scan through quickly. Press [ALBUM ENTER] to exit category mode.
  “CAT OFF” (CATEGORY OFF) is displayed briefly on the display.
Category mode will cancel automatically after approximately 15 seconds if there is no user input.
XM channel selection by category enables you to narrow down your choices to c hannels 
belonging to a broadcasting category of your choice  and then to select a favourite 
channel from the chosen category. Available categor ies vary according to broadcasting 
hours . The unit  does not disp lay categories with  no broadcasting XM channel.Each XM channel may belong to two categories (Category 1 and Category 2). Both categories are used for channel selection by category.

Selecting XM channels by category
Channel presettingChannel presets allow you to quickly and conveniently select your favourite XM channels. Up to 15 XM channels can be stored as channel presets. Press [PLAY MODE] to select “MANUAL”. Press [2/u] or [1/i] or numbered buttons to select a channel. Press [PGM, -AUTO PRESET]. Press the numbered buttons to select a channel.
  The station occupying a channel is erased if another station is preset in that 
channel. Repeat steps 2 to 4 to preset more stations.
You can only preset XM stations which you can receive.XM channel 0 (RADIO ID) cannot be stored as a channel preset.Selecting a preset station Press [PLAY MODE] to select “PRESET”. Press [2/u] or [1/i] or numbered buttons to select a channel.

The display mode setting can be changed to display information about the broadcast content such as the category, song title or artist’s name.
Press [DISPLAY] repeatedly to display.Example:

Play timer
You can set the timer to come on at a certain time to wake you up.Preparation: Turn the unit on and set the clock.Prepare the music source you want to listen to; disc, radio or music port source, and set the volume.
