21 Step 1 Turn the Camera On and Select L (Auto) Mode Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Indicators Displayed in L (Auto) Mode lAvailable Functions in L (Auto) Mode In L (auto) mode, macro close-up mode (c31) and exposure compensation (c32) can be applied and pictures can be taken using the flash (c28) and self-timer (c30). Pressing m in L (auto) mode displays the shooting menu. This menu allows you to specify the image mode (c89), white balance setting (c91), and to apply continuous shooting (c93), BSS (c95), ISO sensitivity (c96), color options (c96), and AF area (c97) to suit shooting conditions or your own preferences. lVibration Reduction [Vibration reduction] (c114), when [On] (default setting) is selected, can be applied to effec- tively reduce blur, caused by slight hand movement known as camera shake, that commonly occurs when shooting with zoom applied or at slow shutter speeds. Vibration reduction can be used in all shooting modes. lAuto Power Off in L (Auto) Mode (Standby Mode) The monitor will dim to reduce the drain on the battery if no operations are performed for about five seconds. The monitor will brighten when camera controls are used. At default set- tings, the monitor will turn off altogether if no operations are performed for about a minute during shooting and playback. The camera will turn off automatically if no operations are per- formed for another three minutes (c116). 6 MML WW 6 Shooting mode M displayed in L (auto) mode Image mode Choose from seven image-mode options depending on how you plan to use the picture. 22 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 2 Frame a Picture 1Ready the camera. Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, and self-timer lamp. 2Frame the picture. Position the main subject near the center of the mon- itor. Using the Zoom Use the zoom buttons to activate optical zoom. Press t (j) to zoom out, increasing the area visi- ble in the frame, or v (k) to zoom in so that the subject fills a larger area of the frame. 23 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode jDigital Zoom Unlike optical zoom, data from the camera’s image sensor are processed digitally with digital zoom. Details visible at maximum optical zoom are simply enlarged, producing a slightly “grainy” image. lHigh-sensitivity Shooting Mode In high-sensitivity shooting mode (c33), sensitivity is increased to reduce blurring caused by camera shake or subject movement under low lighting. lAnti-shake Mode In anti-shake mode (c42), [Vibration reduction] (c114) and [BSS] (best shot selector) (c95) are enabled to reduce blurring caused by camera shake and subject movement, and the flash is disabled. With [BSS] enabled, the camera takes shots to a maximum of ten, they are compared, and the sharpest picture (picture with the highest level of detail) is saved. A higher sensitivity is set, and the shutter speed will be faster, even for shooting subjects in the same brightness, than in L (auto) mode. This mode is not suited to shooting under low lighting, but is suited to shooting under natural light when the camera is zoomed in. Downloaded From camera-usermanual.com Nikon Manuals
24 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 Focus and Shoot 1Press the shutter-release button halfway. The camera focuses on the subject positioned within the active focus area. By default, the camera auto- matically chooses the focus area (one of five) contain- ing the subject closest to the camera and adjusts exposure accordingly. When the subject is in focus, the active focus area and focus indicator (p) glow green. When the camera is unable to focus, the focus area and focus indicator blink red. Change the composi- tion and try again. The focus area is not displayed when digital zoom is in effect. 2Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down. The picture will be recorded to the memory card or internal memory. lShutter-Release Button The camera features a two-stage shutter-release button.
