    4. Optimize Performance
You can set up the router to optimize performance for applications such as multiplayer gaming,
peer-to-peer connections, or real-time communications such as instant messaging or remote
assistance (a feature in Windows XP). By default, the router uses Wi-Fi Multimedia Quality of
    Service (WMM QoS).
This chapter contains the following sections:
•Use Dynamic QoS to Prioritize Bandwidth
•Improve Network Connections with Universal Plug and Play
    •Wi-Fi Multimedia Quality of Service

Use Dynamic QoS to Prioritize Bandwidth
Dynamic Quality of Service (QoS) prioritizes your WiFi bandwidth by ap\
    plication and device.
If your Internet bandwidth is limited, Dynamic QoS resolves Internet tra\
    ffic congestion by
using better application and device identification, bandwidth allocation\
    , and traffic
    prioritization techniques.
If you like gaming and streaming videos, you can benefit from enabling D\
    ynamic QoS.
Note:If you use a gigabit Internet connection, or your Internet download and \
upload speed is 300 Mbps or faster, you don’t need to use Dynamic
    QoS.

Configure the Performance Optimization Database Update
The router uses a performance optimization database that analyzes the mo\
st popular applications and services to determine how to implement Dynamic QoS. You can enable or
disable this feature or manually update the database. For more informati\
    on about how to
manually update the database, see Manually Update the Performance Optimization
    Database on page 49.
To enable or disable the automatic performance optimization database upda\

Manually Update the Performance Optimization Database
The router uses a performance optimization database that analyzes the mo\
st popular applications and services to determine how to implement Dynamic QoS. By \
    default, the
router automatically updates this database when you enable Dynamic QoS, \
    but if you turned
off the automatic update feature, you can manually update the database.
To manually update the performance optimization database:
    1. Launch a web browser from a computer or wireless device that is connecte\
    d to the
    network.
    2. T

Improve Network Connections with Universal Plug and
    Play
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) helps devices, such as Internet appliances and computers,
access the network and connect to other devices as needed. UPnP devices can
automatically discover the services from other registered UPnP devices on the network.
If you use applications such as multiplayer gaming, peer-to-peer connections, or real-time
communications such as instant messaging or remote assistance (a feature in Windows XP),
    enable UPnP.
To enable Universal Plug and Play:
    1. Launch a web browser from a computer or wireless device that is connected to the
    network.
    2. Enter http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com in the address field of the
    web browser.

    4. Select ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > UPnP.
    The UPnP screen displays.
    5. Select the Turn UPnP On check box.
By default, this check box is selected. If the Turn UPnP On check box is cleared, the
router does not allow any device to automatically control router resources, such as port
    forwarding.
    6. Type the advertisement period in minutes.
