    Static Routes
Static routes provide more routing information to your WiFi DSL modem ro\
    uter. Under usual
circumstances, the WiFi DSL modem router has adequate routing informatio\
    n after it has
been configured for Internet access, and you do not need to configure mo\
    re static routes.
You have to configure static routes only for unusual cases such as multip\
le WiFi DSL modem routers or multiple IP subnets on your network.
As an example of when a static route is needed, consider the following c\
    ase: • Y
our primary Internet access is through a cable modem to an ISP.

    							Advanced Settings 122
    D6200 WiFi DSL Modem Router
    •
You have an ISDN WiFi DSL modem router on your home network for connectin\
    g to the
company where you are employed. This WiFi DSL modem router’s address on your LAN
    is 192.168.1.100.
    • Y
our company’s network address is 134.177.0.0.
When you first configured your WiFi DSL modem router, two implicit stati\
    c routes were
    created.

A default route was created with your ISP as the gateway, and a second static route
was created to your local network for all 192.168.1.x addresses. With th\
    is configuration, if you
attempt to access a device on the 134.177.0.0 network, your WiFi DSL mod\
    em router
forwards your request to the ISP. The ISP forwards your request to the company where you
are employed, and the request is likely to be denied by the company’s firewall.
In this case you have to define a static route, telling your WiFi DSL mo\
    dem router that
134.177.0.0 should be accessed through the ISDN WiFi DSL modem router at\

    192.168.1.100. In this example:
    • The Destination IP
Address and IP Subnet Mask fields specify that this static route
    applies to all 134.177.x.x addresses.
    • The Gateway IP
Address field specifies that all traffic for these addresses should be
forwarded to the ISDN WiFi DSL modem router at 192.168.1.100.
    • A metric value of 1 works since the ISDN WiFi DSL modem router is on the\
     LAN.
    • Private is selected only as a precautionary security measure in case RIP\
     is activated.
To set up a static route:
    1. Select ADV
ANCED > Advanced Setup > Static Routes.

    							Advanced Settings 123
     D6200 WiFi DSL Modem Router
    2.
    Click Add.
    3. In the Route Name field, type a name for this static route (for identif\
    ication purposes only.)
    4. (Optional) Select the Private check box if you want to limit access to the LAN only
     .
If Private is selected, the static route is not reported in RIP.
    5. Select the Active check box.
    6. T
ype the IP address of the final destination.
    7. T
ype the IP subnet mask for this destination.
If the destination is a single host, type 255.255.255.255 .
    8. T
    ype the gateway IP address.
The gateway IP address has to be a WiFi DSL modem router on the same LAN\
segment as the WiFi DSL modem router.
    9. T
ype a number from 1 through 15 as the metric value.
This value represents the number of WiFi DSL modem routers between your \
    network and the destination. Usually
, a setting of 2 or 3 works, but if this connection is a direct
    connection, set it to 1.
    10. Click Apply .
    The route is made effective.

    ur WiFi DSL
    modem router over the Internet.
    Note:
Be sure to change the WiFi DSL modem router’s default login
password to a secure password. The ideal password should contain
no dictionary words from any language and contain uppercase and
lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. It can be up to 30
characters. For more information, see Set Password on page 98.
    To set up remote management:
    1. Select ADV
ANCED > Advanced Setup > Remote Management .

Normal web browser access uses the standard HTTP service port 80. For greater
security, enter a custom port number for the remote web management interface. Choose
a number from 1024 through 65535, but do not use the number of any common service
port. The default is 8080, which is a common alternate for HTTP.
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When accessing your WiFi DSL modem router from the Internet, type your WiFi DSL
modem router’s WAN IP address into your browser’s address or location field followed by a
colon (:) and the custom port number.
For example, if your external address is 134.177.0.123 and you use port number 8080,
    enter http://134.177.0.123:8080 in your browser.

    Universal Plug and Play
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) helps devices, such as Internet applian\
    ces and computers,
to access the network and connect to other devices as needed. UPnP devic\
    es can
automatically discover the services from other registered UPnP devices o\
    n the network.
    Note:
If you use applications such as multiplayer gaming, peer-to-peer
connections, or real-time communications such as instant messaging
or remote assistance (a feature in Windows XP), you should enable
    UPnP.
To turn on Universal Plug and Play:
    1. Select ADV
     ANCED > Advanced Setup > UPnP .
    2. Configure the following settings:
    • T
urn UPnP On . Enable or disable automatic device configuration. The default setting
for UPnP is disabled. If this check box is not selected, the WiFi DSL mo\
    dem router
does not allow any device to automatically control the resources, such a\
    s port
forwarding (mapping), of the WiFi DSL modem router.
    • Advertisement Period. The advertisement period is how often the WiFi DSL modem
    router broadcasts its UPnP information.
This value can range from 1 to 1440 minutes.
The default period is 30 minutes. Shorter durations ensure that control \
points have current device status at the expense of more network traffic. Longer durations can
compromise the freshness of the device status, but can significantly red\
    uce network
    traffic.

    							Advanced Settings 127
     D6200 WiFi DSL Modem Router
    •
Advertisement Time to Live. The time to live for the advertisement is measured in
hops (steps) for each UPnP packet sent. The time to live hop count is the number of
steps a broadcast packet is allowed to propagate for each UPnP advertise\
    ment
before it disappears. The number of hops can range from 1 to 255. The default value
for the advertisement time to live is 4 hops, which should be fine for m\
    ost home
networks. If you notice that some devices are not being updated or reach\
    ed correctly,
it might be necessary to increase this value.
    • UPnP Portmap T
able. The UPnP Portmap table displays the IP address of each
UPnP device that is accessing the WiFi DSL modem router and which ports \
    (internal
and external) that device has opened. The UPnP Portmap table also displays what
type of port is open and whether that port is still active for each IP a\
    ddress.
    3. Click Apply .
    IPv6
You can use this feature to set up an IPv6 Internet connection type if NE\
    TGEAR genie does
