Replacing hardware 29 Replacing hardware 8 Attention Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any repair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer. To obtain copies of the Safety and Warranty Guide or HMM, go to the Support Web site at: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com.Note Use only parts provided by Lenovo. General information Pre-disassembly instructions Before proceeding with the disassembly procedure, make sure that you do the following: 1. Turn off the power to the system and all peripherals. 2. Unplug all power and signal cables from the computer. 3. Place the system on a flat, stable surface.
Hardware Maintenance Manual 30 Removing the computer stand Attention Turn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let the computer cool down before removing the computer stand. To remove the computer stand: Note For this procedure, it helps to place the computer face-down on a soft flat surface. Lenovo recommends that you use a blanket, towel, or other soft cloth to protect the screen surface from scratches or other damage. 1. Remove any media (diskettes, CDs, or memory cards) from the drives, shut down the operating system, turn off all attached devices, and the computer. 2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets. 3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer. This includes power cords, input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connected to the computer. Refer to “Locating connectors on the rear of the computer.” 4. Push the computer stand upward to the end , then slide the lock to the right side to lock the computer stand . Note Slide the lock to the left side to unlock the computer stand when finish replacing a FRU.
Chapter 8. Replacing hardware 31 1 2 5. Remove the 2 screws that secure the computer stand to the chassis. 6. Slide out the computer stand. 4 3 3 Warning When finish replacing a FRU, follow the below instructions to install back computer stand. Incorrect operations may damage the computer stand.
Hardware Maintenance Manual 32 To reinstall the computer stand 1. Align then slide the computer stand back in and screw it back. 2. Push the stand upward as far as it will go. 3. Slide the lock to the left to unlock the computer stand. 1 2 3 Replacing a memory module Attention Turn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let the computer cool down before removing the computer cover. Remove any media (diskettes, CDs, or memory cards) from the drives, shut down the operating system, turn off all attached devices, and the computer. 2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets. 3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer. This includes power cords, input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connected to the computer. Refer to “Locating connectors on the rear of the computer”. 4. Remove the rubber cap that protects the screw. 5. Remove the screw that secures the memory cover to the computer cover. 6. Lift up the memory cover. 1 2 3
Hardware Maintenance Manual 34 7. Push out the latches on both sides of the memory socket to release the memory module and gently pull the memory module upward to remove it from its socket . Both memory modules can be removed by using the same procedure. 4 54 8. Align then insert the new memory module into the socket and push down on the top edge of the memory module. Make sure the latches lock the memory module in place. 9. Align then slide back the memory cover. 10. Screw the memory cover back. Replacing the optical disk drive Attention Turn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let the computer cool down before replacing the optical drive.

(2) Screw back the metal bracket to the new optical drive. (3) Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay. 10. Screw the new optical drive back to the chassis.
