DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 4.40 DEFENDER V8i INTERIOR ILLUMINATION DESCRIPTION When the side lamps are switched on, the interior controls and gauges are illuminated so they can be easily located during night driving. Interior illumination is not controlled by the ignition switch. OPERATION Feed from the positive battery terminal is connected to fusible link 6 of the engine compartment fuse box (C1217-1) by a brown wire. Current flows across fusible link 6 (C572-3) and on to the lighting switch (C41-1) on a brown wire. With the lighting switch in either the side or main beam position (C41-2), current will flow to fuse 12 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C581-1) on a red wire. Fuse 12 (C581-4) supplies a feed to the following switches and gauges: ·The cigar lighter (C74-1) on a red/orange wire. ·The engine coolant temperature gauge (C1205-1) on a red/white wire. ·The speedometer (C1060-1) on a red/white wire. ·The tachometer (C1204-1) on a red/white wire. ·The heater controls (C1199-1 & C1200-1) on red/white wires. ·The fuel gauge (C1206-1) on a red/white wire. ·The automatic gearbox selector (C245-2) on a red/orange wire. ·The instrument pack (C230-8) on a red/orange wire. All the above are connected in parallel and are earthed on black wires.
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION DEFENDER V8i4.41 INSTRUMENTS DESCRIPTION The vehicle relays information to the driver via the instrument pack. The instrument pack contains lamps and analogue gauges. The colour of the lamp denotes the severity of the information. Warning lamps are red, caution lamps are orange, green and blue lamps indicate a system is operating. The analogue gauges relay information to the driver such as engine speed, and engine temperature. OPERATION Feed from the positive battery terminal is connected to fusible link 5 of the engine compartment fuse box (C1217-1) by a brown wire. Fusible link 5 (C570-2) supplies a feed to the ignition switch (C28-1) on a brown wire. With the ignition switch in position II (C90-1), a feed is supplied to fuse 1 (C580-1) and fuse 17 (C581-13) of the passenger compartment fuse box on white wires. Fuse 17 (C581-14) is connected to the instrument pack by a green then white/green wires, and supplies a feed to the following gauges: ·The speedometer (C1060-2), which is also fed a signal from the speed transducer (C1060-4) on a black/red wire. The speedometer is earthed (C1060-5) on a black wire. ·The fuel gauge (C1054-2), which is also fed a signal from the fuel tank sender unit (C1054-3) on a green/black wire. The fuel gauge is earthed (C1054-1) on a black wire. ·The tachometer (C1202-1), which is also fed a signal from the alternator (C1201-1) on a white/slate wire. The tachometer is earthed (C1203-1) on a black wire. ·The coolant temperature gauge (C1052-2), which is also fed a signal from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor (C1052-3) on a green/blue wire. The coolant temperature gauge is earthed (C1052-1) on a black wire. All four gauges are connected in parallel.
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 4.42 DEFENDER V8i Fuse 1 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C580-2) is also connected to the instrument pack (C233-2) on a white/green wire, and supplies a feed to the following warning lamps. ·The hazard warning lamp, which is provided an earth path (C233-8) via the hazard warning/indicator circuit on a black/red wire. See EXTERIOR LAMPS - Indicators / Hazard Warning Lamps. ·The ignition/no charge warning lamp, which is provided an earth path (C185-1) via the alternator on a brown/yellow wire. See CHARGING AND STARTING. ·The main beam warning lamp, which is provided an earth path (C230-6) via the headlamp circuit on a blue/white wire. See EXTERIOR LAMPS - Head, Side and Number Plate Lamps. ·The handbrake warning lamp (C233-4) which is connected to the handbrake switch (C288-1) by a white/yellow wire. When the handbrake is pulled on, the switch closes and creates a path to earth. ·The RH and LH indicator warning lamps (C233-7 & C230-5 respectively), which are provided earth paths via the hazard warning/indicator circuit on green/white (RH) and green/red (LH) wires. See EXTERIOR LAMPS - Indicators / Hazard Warning Lamps. ·The side lamp warning lamp, which is provided an earth path (C230-8) via the headlamp circuit on a red/orange wire. See EXTERIOR LAMPS - Head, Side and Number Plate Lamps. ·The trailer pick-up warning lamp, which is provided an earth path (C230-3) via the hazard warning/indicator circuit on a light green/purple wire. See EXTERIOR LAMPS - Indicators / Hazard Warning Lamps. ·The rear fog lamp warning lamp, which is provided an earth path (C230-1) via the fog lamp ECU (C543-3) on a red/yellow wire. See EXTERIOR LAMPS - Rear Fog Lamps. ·The differential lock warning lamp (C233-10), which is connected to the differential lock (C306-1) by black/blue wire. ·The oil pressure warning lamp (C233-3) which is connected to the oil pressure switch (C187-1) by a white/brown wire. The switch will close, providing a route to earth for the warning lamp, if it doesnt register any oil pressure.
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION DEFENDER V8i4.43 CIGAR LIGHTER DESCRIPTION The cigar lighter is located towards the centre of the dash panel. Pressing the centre of the cigar lighter latches the heater element into the holder. With the ignition in position II, power flows through the heating element of the cigar lighter, causing it to heat up. When the heating element reaches a sufficient temperature, the holder automatically releases the cigar lighter which can then be removed for use. The location of the cigar lighter holder is illuminated when the side lamps are switched on. OPERATION Feed from the positive battery terminal is connected to the engine compartment fuse box (C1217-1) by a brown wire. Current passes through fusible link 5 and fusible link 6 of the engine compartment fuse box, which are connected in parallel. Fusible link 6 of the engine compartment fuse box (C572-3) supplies a constant battery feed to the lighting switch (C41-1) on a brown wire. When the lighting switch is in the side or main beam position, current flows through the switch (C41-2) to fuse 12 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C581-1) on a red wire. Fuse 12 (C581-4) is connected the cigar lighter illumination bulb (C74-1) by a red/orange wire. The bulb is earthed (C89-1) on a black wire. Fusible link 5 of engine compartment fuse box (C570-2) is connected to the ignition switch (C28-1) by a brown wire. When the ignition switch is in position II, current flows from the ignition switch (C90-1) to fuse 19 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C581-13) on a white wire. Fuse 19 (C581-18) is connected to the cigar lighter (C89-2) by a green/orange wire. The cigar lighter is earthed (C89-1) on a black wire.
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 4.44 DEFENDER V8i IN-CAR ENTERTAINMENT DESCRIPTION The radio/cassette player operates when the ignition switch is in position I or II. Signal output from the radio / cassette player is relayed to four loud speakers; two mounted in the front doors, two in the rear of the vehicle. The radio/cassette display is illuminated when the unit is switched on. OPERATION Feed from the positive battery terminal is connected to fusible link 5 and fusible link 6 of the engine compartment fuse box (C1217-1) by a brown wire. Fusible link 5 (C570-2) supplies a feed to the ignition switch (C28-1), and fuse 2 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C580-3) on brown wires. Fuse 2 (C580-4) supplies a constant battery feed to the radio/cassette player (C98-4) on a purple wire. This feed powers the units memory, allowing the radio to store up to 30 pre-set radio stations. When the ignition switch is turned to position I, current flows from the switch (C99-1) to fuse 5 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C580-7) on a white/orange wire. Fuse 5 (C580-10) supplies an ignition feed to the radio/cassette player (C98-7) on a white/pink wire. Fusible link 6 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C572-3) supplies a feed to the lighting switch (C41-1) on a brown wire. When the lighting switch is moved to position 1 or 2, it provides a feed (C41-2) to fuse 11 of the passenger compartment fuse box (C581-1) on a red wire. Fuse 11 (C581-2) provides a feed for the radio/cassette players illuminated display circuit (C98-6) on a red/black wire.
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION DEFENDER V8i4.45 The radio/cassette player is connected to 4 speakers as follows; ·The RH rear speaker on black/white (C92-1) and black/brown (C92-2) wires. ·The LH rear speaker on black/green (C92-7) and black/blue (C92-8) wires. ·The RH front door speaker on black/pink (C92-3) and black/red (C92-4) wires. ·The LH front door speaker on black/yellow (C92-5) and black/orange (C92-6) wires. The radio/cassette player is earthed (C98-8) on a black wire.
