NOTE:The functional range (how far your wireless signals travel) depends on WLAN implementation, router manufacturer, and interference from other electronic devices or structural barriers such as walls and floors. Using Bluetooth wireless devices (select models only) A Bluetooth device provides short-range wireless communications that replace the physical cable connections that traditionally link electronic devices such as the following: ●Computers (desktop, notebook, PDA) ●Phones (cellular, cordless, smart phone) ●Imaging devices (printer, camera) ●Audio devices (headset, speakers) ●Mouse Bluetooth devices provide peer-to-peer capability that allows you to set up a PAN of Bluetooth devices. For information about configuring and using Bluetooth devices, see the Bluetooth software Help. Connecting to a wired network Connecting to a local area network (LAN) Use a LAN connection if you want to connect the computer directly to a router in your home (instead of working wirelessly), or if you want to connect to an existing network at your office. Connecting to a LAN requires an 8-pin, RJ-45 (network) cable. To connect the network cable, follow these steps: 1.Plug the network cable into the network jack (1) on the computer. 2.Plug the other end of the network cable into a network wall jack (2) or router. NOTE:If the network cable contains noise suppression circuitry (3), which prevents interference from TV and radio reception, orient the circuitry end of the cable toward the computer. 4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP computer as an entertainment hub to socialize via the webcam, enjoy and manage your music, and download and watch movies. Or, to make your computer an even more powerful entertainment center, connect external devices like a monitor, projector, or TV, or speakers and headphones. Multimedia features Here are some of the entertainment features on your computer. Component Description (1) Internal microphones (2) Record sound. (2) Webcam light On: The webcam is in use. Component Description (4) Optical drive Reads and/or writes, depending on your computer model, to an optical disc. NOTE:For disc compatibility information, navigate to the Help and Support webpage (see More HP resources on page 3). Follow the web page instructions to select your computer model. Select Support & Drivers, and then select Product Information. (5) USB 2.0 port Connects an optional USB device, such as a keyboard, mouse, external drive, printer, scanner or USB hub. (6) Audio-out (headphone) jack/Audio-in (microphone) jackConnects optional powered stereo speakers, headphones, earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cable. Also connects an optional headset microphone. This jack does not support optional microphone-only devices. To access this guide, from the Start screen, type support, select the HP Support Assistant app, select My computer, and then select User guides. NOTE:When a device is connected to the jack, the computer speakers are disabled. NOTE:Be sure that the device cable has a 4- conductor connector that supports both audio-out (headphone) and audio-in (microphone). (7) Speakers (2) Produce sound. (8) Memory card reader Connects optional memory cards that store, manage, share, or access information. To insert: 1.Hold the card, label side up with connectors facing the slot and push in the card until it is firmly seated. To remove: 1.Press in on the card and quickly release it until it pops out. (9) USB 3.0 ports (2) Connect optional USB device, such as a keyboard, mouse, external drive, printer, scanner or USB hub. Using the webcam Your computer has an integrated webcam that records video and captures photographs. Some models may allow you to video conference and chat online using streaming video. ▲To start the webcam, from the Start screen, type c, and then select CyberLink YouCam from the list of applications. For details about using the webcam, go to Help and Support. From the Start screen, type h, and then select Help and Support. Using audio On your computer, you can play music CDs, download and listen to music, stream audio content from the web (including radio), record audio, or mix audio and video to create multimedia. To enhance your listening enjoyment, attach external audio devices such as speakers or headphones. Connecting speakers You can attach wired speakers to your computer by connecting them to a USB port or to the audio- out (headphone) jack on your computer or on a docking station. To connect wireless speakers to your computer, follow the device manufacturers instructions. To connect high-definition speakers to the computer, see Setting up HDMI audio on page 28. Before connecting speakers, lower the volume setting. Connecting headphones You can connect wired headphones to the headphone jack on your computer. To connect wireless headphones to your computer, follow the device manufacturers instructions. Connecting a microphone To record audio, connect a microphone to the microphone jack on the computer. For best results when recording, speak directly into the microphone and record sound in a setting free of background noise. Testing your audio features To check the audio functions on your computer, follow these steps: 1.From the Start screen, type c, and then select Control Panel from the list of applications. 2.Select Hardware and Sound, and then select Sound. 3.When the Sound window opens, select the Sounds tab. Under Program Events, select any sound event, such as a beep or alarm, and then click Test. To check the recording functions on your computer, follow these steps: 1.From the Start screen, type s, and then select Sound Recorder. 2.Click Start Recording and speak into the microphone. 3.Save the file to your desktop. 4.Open a multimedia program and play the recording. To confirm or change the audio settings on your computer, follow these steps: 1.From the Start screen, type c, and then select Control Panel from the list of applications. 2.Select Hardware and Sound, and then select Sound. Using video Your computer is a powerful video device that enables you to watch streaming video from your favorite websites and download video and movies to watch on your computer when you are not connected to a network. To enhance your viewing enjoyment, use one of the video ports on the computer to connect an external monitor, projector, or TV. Your computer has a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port, which allows you to connect a high-definition monitor or TV. IMPORTANT:Be sure that the external device is connected to the correct port on the computer, using the correct cable. Check the device manufacturers instructions. NOTE:Your computer may have a video graphics array (VGA) port adapter, which connects analog video devices. Using video 25
Connecting video devices using a VGA cable To see the computer screen image on an external VGA monitor or projected for a presentation, connect a monitor or projector to the computers VGA port or adapter. To connect a monitor or projector: 1.Connect the VGA cable from the monitor or projector to the VGA port or adapter on the computer as shown. 2.Press f4 to alternate the screen image between 4 display states: ●PC Screen only: View the screen image on the computer only. ●Duplicate: View the screen image simultaneously on both the computer and the external device. ●Extend: View the screen image extended across both the computer and the external device. ●Second screen only: View the screen image on the external device only. Each time you press f4, the display state changes. NOTE:For best results, especially if you choose the Extend option, adjust the screen resolution of the external device, as follows. From the Start screen, type c, and then select Control Panel from the list of applications. Select Appearance and Personalization. Connecting video devices using an HDMI cable NOTE:To connect an HDMI device to your computer, you need an HDMI cable, sold separately. To see the computer screen image on a high-definition TV or monitor, connect the high-definition device according to the following instructions. 1.Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the computer. 2.Connect the other end of the cable to the high-definition TV or monitor. 3.Press f4 to alternate the computer screen image between 4 display states: ●PC screen only: View the screen image on the computer only. ●Duplicate: View the screen image simultaneously on both the computer and the external device. ●Extend: View the screen image extended across both the computer and the external device. ●Second screen only: View the screen image on the external device only. Each time you press f4, the display state changes. NOTE:For best results, especially if you choose the “Extend” option, adjust the screen resolution of the external device, as follows. From the Start screen, type c, and then select Control Panel from the list of applications. Select Appearance and Personalization. Under Display, select Adjust screen resolution. Using video 27
Setting up HDMI audio HDMI is the only video interface that supports high-definition video and audio. After you connect an HDMI TV to the computer, you can then turn on HDMI audio by following these steps: 1.From the Windows desktop, right-click the Speakers icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and then select Playback devices. 2.On the Playback tab, select the name of the digital output device. 3.Click Set Default, and then click OK. To return the audio stream to the computer speakers: 1.From the Windows desktop, right-click the Speakers icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and then click Playback devices. 2.On the Playback tab, click Speakers / HP. 3.Click Set Default, and then click OK. Connecting video devices wirelessly (select models only) Intel Wireless Display allows you to transmit your computer content wirelessly to your receive/display device, such as HDTV, monitor, projector, game console, Blu-ray player, or DVR, by using an optional wireless adapter (purchased separately). For details about using the wireless adapter, see the manufacturers instructions. ▲To open Intel Wireless Display, from the Start screen, type w, and then select Intel WiDi. NOTE:Before using the wireless display feature, be sure that your wireless device is turned on. Managing your audio and video files (select models only) CyberLink PowerDVD helps you manage and edit your photo and video collections. ▲To open CyberLink PowerDVD, from the Start screen, type c, and then select CyberLink PowerDVD. 5 Navigating the screen You can navigate the computer screen in several ways: ●Touch gestures ●Keyboard and mouse Touch gestures can be used on your computer TouchPad or on a touch screen (select models only). NOTE:An external USB mouse (purchased separately) can be connected to one of the USB ports on the computer. Review the Windows 8 Basics guide included with your computer. The guide provides information on common tasks using the TouchPad, touch screen, or the keyboard. Select computer models have special action keys or hot key functions on the keyboard to perform routine tasks. Using the TouchPad The TouchPad allows you to navigate the computer with simple finger movements. You can customize the touch gestures by changing settings, button configurations, click speed, and pointer options. From the Start screen, type c, select Control Panel, and then select Hardware and Sound. Under Devices and Printers, select Mouse. Using TouchPad gestures A TouchPad allows you to control the pointer on the screen using your fingers. TIP:Use the left and right buttons on the TouchPad as you would use the corresponding buttons on an external mouse. NOTE:TouchPad gestures are not supported in all apps. To view a demonstration of each gesture: 1.From the Start screen, type c, select Control Panel, and then select Hardware and Sound. 2.Select Synaptics TouchPad. 3.Click a gesture to activate the demonstration. To turn a gesture off or on: 1.From the Synaptics TouchPad screen, select or clear the check box next to the gesture that you want to turn on or off. 2.Click Apply, and then click OK. –or – A TouchPad allows you to control the pointer on the screen using your fingers. TIP:Use the left and right buttons on the TouchPad as you would use the corresponding buttons on an external mouse. Using the TouchPad 29
NOTE:TouchPad gestures are not supported in all apps, and only common gestures are documented in this guide. More gestures are available when you choose to view a demonstration of each gesture. To view a demonstration of each gesture: 1.From the Start screen, type c, select Control Panel, and then select Hardware and Sound. 2.Select Touch Pad. 3.Click a gesture to activate the demonstration. To turn a gesture off or on: 1.From the Start Screen, type c, select Control Panel, select Hardware and Sound, and then select Touch Pad. The Mouse Properties dialog box opens. 2.From the Touch Pad tab, click Click to change the Touch Pad settings. 3.From the Touch Pad screen, select the appropriate gesture, and then select or clear the check box next to the gesture that you want to turn off or on. 4.Click Save. Tapping To make an on-screen selection, use the tap function on the TouchPad. ●Point to an item on the screen, and then tap one finger on the TouchPad zone to make a selection.
