Clear jams Occasionally, media becomes jammed during a job. Try the following remedies before you attempt to clear the jam. • Make sure that you are printing with media that meets specifications. For moreinformation, see Select print media . • Make sure that you are printing with media that is not wrinkled, folded, or damaged. • Make sure that the device is clean. For more information, see Clean the device . • Make sure that the trays are loaded correctly and are not too full. For more information, see Load media . This section contains the following topics: • Clear paper jams • Avoid paper jams Clear paper jams If the paper was loaded in the input tray, you might need to clear the paper jam from the duplexer. Paper can also jam in the automatic document feeder. Several common actions can cause paper to jam the automatic document feeder: • Placing too much paper in the document feeder tray. For information on the maximum number of sheets allowed in the automatic document feeder, see Load originals . • Using paper that is too thick or too thin for the device. • Trying to add paper to the document feeder tray while the device is feeding pages. To clear a jam 1. Remove all media from the output tray. CAUTION: Trying to clear a paper jam from the front of the device can damage the print mechanism. Always access and clear paper jams through the duplexer. 2. Check the duplexer. a. Push the button on either side of the duplexer, and then remove the panel or unit. Clear jams 227
b. Locate any jammed media inside the device, grasp it with both hands and then pull it towards you. c . If the jam is not there, push the latch on the top of the duplexer and lower its cover. If the jam is inside, carefully remove it. Close the cover. d. Reinsert the duplexer into the device. 3. Open the top cover and remove any debris. 4. If you have not found the jam and have Tray 2 installed, pull out the tray and remove the jammed media, if possible. If not, do the following: a. Ensure the device is turned off and disconnect the power cord. b . Lift the device off Tray 2. c . Remove the jammed media from the bottom of the device or from Tray 2. d . Reposition the device on top of Tray 2. 5. Open the print carriage access door. If there is paper remaining inside the device, ensure the carriage has moved to the right of the device, free any paper scraps or wrinkled media, and pull the media towards you through the top of the device. WARNING! Do not reach into the device when it is on and the carriage is stuck. When you open the print carriage access door, the carriage should return to its position on the right side of the device. If it does not move to the right, turn off the device before you remove any jam. 6. After clearing the jam, close all covers, turn on the device (if you turned it off) and resend the print job. To clear a paper jam in the automatic document feeder 1.Lift the cover of the automatic document feeder. 2.Gently pull the paper out of the rollers. CAUTION: If the paper tears when you are removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might be remaining inside the device. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the device, more paper jams are likely to occur. 3. Close the cover of the automatic document feeder. Avoid paper jams To help avoid paper jams, follow these guidelines. • Remove printed papers from the output tray frequently. • Prevent curled or wrinkled paper by storing all unused paper flat in a resealable bag. • Ensure that paper loaded in the input tray lays flat and the edges are not bent or torn. • Do not combine different paper types and paper sizes in the input tray; the entire stack of paper in the input tray must be the same size and type. • Adjust the paper-width guide in the input tray to fit snugly against all paper. Make sure the paper-width guide does not bend the paper in the input tray. • Do not force paper too far forward in the input tray. • Use paper types that are recommended for the device. Advanced printhead maintenance WARNING!Only reinstall the printhead as part of the procedure for Printhead Problem error messages To reinstall the printhead 1.Make sure that the product is turned on. 2. Open the ink cartridge door. 3.Remove all of the ink cartridges and place them on a piece of paper with the ink opening pointing up. 4.Lift the latch handle on the print carriage. Errors 231
5.Remove the printhead by lifting it straight up. 6.Clean the printhead. There are three areas of the printhead that need to be cleaned: the plastic ramps on both sides of the ink nozzles, the edge between the nozzles and the electrical contacts, and the electrical contacts. 1Plastic ramps on the sides of the nozzles 2Edge between nozzles and contacts 3Electrical contacts CAUTION: Touch the nozzle and the electrical contact areas only with cleaning materials and not with your finger. To clean the printhead a. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth and wipe the electrical contact area from the bottom to the top. Do not go past the edge between the nozzles and the electrical contacts. Clean until no new ink shows on the cloth. b. Use a fresh, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth to wipe any accumulated ink and debris from the edge between the nozzles and the contacts. c. Use a fresh, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth to wipe the plastic ramps on both sides of the nozzles. Wipe away from the nozzles. Errors 233
d. Wipe the previously cleaned areas dry with a dry lint-free cloth before proceeding to the next step. 7. Clean the electrical contacts inside the product. To clean the electrical contacts in the product a. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water. b . Clean the electrical contacts in the product by wiping with the cloth from top to bottom. Use as many fresh, clean cloths as necessary. Clean until no ink shows on the cloth. c. Wipe the area dry with a dry lint-free cloth before proceeding to the next step. 8. Make sure the latch handle is raised, and then reinsert the printhead. 9.Carefully lower the latch handle. NOTE: Make sure you lower the latch handle before reinserting the ink cartridges. Leaving the latch handle raised can result in incorrectly seated ink cartridges and problems printing. The latch must remain down in order to correctly install the ink cartridges. Chapter 9 234 Maintain and troubleshoot
10.Using the colored shaped icons for help, slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot until it clicks into place and is seated firmly in the slot. 11.Close the ink cartridge door. You do not need to replace the ink cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable. For information on recycling used ink supplies, see HP inkjet supplies recycling program. The amount of ink in the following cartridge may be low enough to cause poor print quality and cartridge changes may be required soon. If prompted, choose your country/region, and then click Contact HP for information on calling for tech nical support.
