National Fire Protection Association Recommendations on
    Smoke Detectors
    General
With regard to the number and placement of smoke/he at detectors, we subscribe to
the recommendations contained in the National Fire Protection Associations
    Standard #74 noted below.
Early warning fire detection is best achieved by th e installation of fire detection
equipment in all rooms and areas of the premises as follows: A smoke detector
installed outside of each separate sleeping area, i n the immediate vicinity of the
bedrooms and on each additional story of the family living unit, including basements
and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics.
In addition, it is recommended that the owner consi der the use of heat or smoke
detectors in the living room, dining room, bedroom( s), kitchen, hallway(s), attic,
furnace room, utility and storage rooms, basements and attached garages.

    Emergency Evacuation
Establish and regularly practice a plan of escape in the event of fire. The following
steps are recommended by the National Fire Protecti on Association:

     Steps to Safety
    1. Plan on your detector or your interior and/or ex
    terior
    sounders warning all occupants.
    2. Determine two means of escape from each room. On e path
of escape should lead to the door that permits norm al exit
from the building. The other may be a window, shoul d
your path be unpassable. Station an escape ladder a t such
windows if there is a long drop to the ground.
    3. Sketch a floor plan of the building. Show window s, doors,
stairs and rooftops that can be used to escape. Ind icate
escape routes for each room. Keep these routes free from
obstruction and post copies of the escape routes in every
    room.
    4. Assure that all bedroom doors are shut while you are
asleep. This will prevent deadly smoke from enterin g
    while you escape.
    5. Try the door. If the door is hot, check your alt ernate
escape route. If the door is cool, open it cautious ly. Be
prepared to slam the door if smoke or heat rushes i n.
    6. Crawl in the smoke and hold your breath.
    7. Escape quickly; dont panic.
    8. Establish a common meeting place outdoors, away from
your premises, where everyone can meet and then tak e
steps to contact the authorities and account for th ose
missing. Choose someone to assure that nobody retur ns to
the premises — many die going back.

IN THE EVENT OF TELEPHONE OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS
If your security system has been connected to the telephone line, and there is trouble with regular
telephone service, disconnect the security system from the telephone line by removing the plug from
the RJ31X (CA38A in Canada) telephone wall jack (yo u should have been shown how to do this by your
installing company). Do not attempt to disconnect the telephone line con nection inside the control

If the regular phone works correctly after the plug has been disconnected from the RJ31X wall jack,
the security system has a problem and you should ca ll your service representative for service

IMPORTANT: A security system connected to an alarm m onitoring station relies on that
    connection.
If the security system is at fault, reinsert the plug as soon as the security system is repaired.
If the phone service is at fault, re-insert the plug immediately, to ensure resumption of full prote ction
    upon restoration of phone service.
The user may not, under any circumstances (in or ou t of warranty), attempt any service or repairs to
