    When operating in salt water, turbid or muddy water, the engine should be flushed with clean water aftereach use.     Running the engine with a low oil
    level can cause engine damage. Check the engine oil level with the
    engine stopped and the outboard
    motor in the vertical position.
    To install the engine cover, place the
    cover on the outboard motor, then
    turn the lock lever to the locked
    position. The engine cover lock lever fastens
    the engine cover to the outboard
    motor.
    To remove the engine cover, turn the
    lock lever to the unlocked position,
    then lift the engine cover off the
    outboard motor.Unlock and remove the engine
    cover.
    Remove the oil f iller cap/dipstick
    and wipe it clean.
    Insert the dipstick without
    screwing it in, then remove it and
    check the oil level shown on the
    dipstick.If the oil level is low, add oil to
    reach the upper limit mark shown
    on the dipstick. Use the oil
    recommendedonp. .
    Install the oil f iller cap/dipstick
    and tighten it securely.

    42 Engine Oil Change

    DRAIN PLUG
    Improper disposal of engine oil
    can be harmf ul to the environment.
    If you change your own oil, please
    dispose of the used oil properly.
    Put it in a sealed container, and
    take it to a recycling center. Do
    not discard it in a trash bin, dump
    it on the ground or pour it down a
    drain. Unlock and remove the engine
    cover (p. ). An engine oil evacuation device may
    be used to remove the engine oil.
    Drain the used oil into a suitable
    container while the engine is warm.
    Warm oil drains quickly and
    completely.
    Remove the oil f iller cap, and
    remove the engine oil drain plug
    and washer.
    Allow the used oil to drain
    completely, then reinstall the
    engine oil drain plug and a new
    washer, and tighten it securely.With the outboard motor in a
    vertical position, fill to the upper
    limit mark on the dipstick (p. )
    with the recommended oil.
    Install and lock the engine cover. Install the oil f iller cap and tighten
    it securely. Engine oil refill capacity: 1.

    43 Engine Oil Recommendations
    SERVICING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR
    Oil is a major f actor af f ecting
    performance and service life. Use
    4-stroke automotive detergent oil.
    SAE 10W-30 is recommended for
    general use.The SAE oil viscosity and service
    classif ication are in the API label on
    the oil container. Honda recommends
    that you use API SERVICE category
    SG, SH or SJ oil with the ‘‘starburst’’
    certif ication mark displayed on the
    container.

    To prevent corrosion, apply anticorrosion oil to pivot
    surf aces where grease cannot penetrate. Apply marine waterproof grease to the following parts:
    Lubrication interval:
    20 operating hours or a month after the date of purchase
    or the initial use, then every 100 hours or 6 months.
    Apply Honda Marine Corrosion Inhibitor (or equivalent) to all areas under the engine cover and any exposed metal
    surf aces.

    Incorrect spark plug can cause
    engine damage. RECOMMENDED SPARK PLUGS:
    Unlock and remove the engine
    cover (p. ).
    Disconnect the spark plug cap
    from the spark plug.
    Remove the spark plug with a
    spark plug wrench and screwdriver
    supplied in the tool kit.Measure the spark plug electrode
    gap with a suitable gauge. The gap
    should be 0.028 0.031 inches
    (0.70 0.80 mm). Correct the
    gap, if necessary, by bending the
    side electrode. Inspect the spark plug. Replace
    them if the electrodes are worn, or
    if the insulators are cracked or
    chipped. 1.

    A loose spark plug can overheat
    and damage the engine.
    Overtightening the spark plug can
    damage the threads in the cylinder
    head.
    Install and lock the engine cover. If reinstalling the used spark plug,
    tighten 1/8 - 1/4 turn after the
    spark plugs seat.
    If reinstalling new spark plug,
    tighten 1/2 turn after the spark
    plugs seat.
    Attach the spark plug cap. Install the spark plug caref ully, by
    hand, to avoid cross-threading.Af ter the spark plug seats, tighten
    with a spark plug wrench supplied
    in the tool kit to compress the

    To refuel, turn the vent knob
    counterclockwise to the OPEN
    position, and unscrew the fuel tank
    cap.Ref uel in a well-ventilated area. Fill
    the tank to the SAFE FILL LEVEL
    line.
    Af ter ref ueling, install the cap and
    tighten it securely. Turn the vent
    knob clockwise to the CLOSED
    position, and return the fuel tank to
    the boat.Never ref ill the f uel tank inside a
    building where gasoline f umes may
    reach f lames or sparks. Keep
    gasoline away f rom appliance pilot
    lights, barbecues, electric appliances,
    power tools, etc.
    Spilled f uel is not only a f ire hazard,
    it causes environmental damage.
    Wipe up spills immediately. FUEL TANK CAPACITY:
    Check the f uel gauge and ref ill the
    tank when necessary.
    Remove the fuel tank from the boat
    for refueling.

    Fuel Pump Filter Inspection
    and Replacement
    Use unleaded gasoline with a pump
    octane rating of 86 or higher.

    Running the engine with persistent
    spark knock or pinging can cause
    engine damage.

    Warranty Your outboard motor is certified to
    operate on unleaded gasoline.
    Unleaded gasoline produces f ewer
    engine and spark plug deposits and
    extends exhaust system life.
    Never use stale or contaminated
    gasoline or an oil/gasoline mixture.
    Avoid getting dirt or water in the f uel
    tank.
    Occasionally you may hear a light
    ‘‘spark knock’’ or ‘‘pinging’’
    (metallic rapping noise) while
    operating under heavy loads. This is
    no cause f or concern.
    If spark knock or pinging occurs at a
    steady engine speed, under normal
    load, change brands of gasoline. If
    spark knock or pinging persists, see
    an authorized Honda marine dealer.Running the engine with persistent
    spark knock or pinging is misuse,
    and the
    does not cover parts
    damaged by misuse.
    Water or sediment accumulated in
    the f ilter can cause loss of power or
    hard starting. To prevent engine
    malf unction, inspect the f ilter and
    replace when necessary. The f uel pump f ilter is located under
    the engine cover, on the right side of
    the engine.
