56 Replacing Gateway 450RGH Components www.gateway.com Replacing the palm rest assembly Tools you need to complete this task: Screws removed during this task: To replace the palm rest assembly: 1Disconnect the AC adapter, modem and network cables, then prepare the notebook by following the instructions in “Preparing the notebook” on page 7. 2Turn the notebook over so the bottom is facing up. Flat-blade driver Scribe or non-marring tool- OR - Phillips #0 screwdriver 1 chrome 2.5×7mm (grounding wire) 4 chrome 2.5 × 2.5 mm (keyboard) 4 chrome 2.5 × 4 mm (cooling assembly) 3 chrome 2.5 × 4 mm (LED indicator panel)1 chrome 2.5 × 4 mm (hard drive kit) 13 chrome 2.5 × 4 mm (12 bottom, palm rest and 1 top, palm rest) 2 chrome 2.5 × 2.5 mm (top, palm rest)

59 Replacing the palm rest assembly www.gateway.com 14Open the notebook, then remove the three screws on the top of the notebook. 15Use two fingers to carefully pull up on the touchpad connector tabs. After the connector is in the raised position, carefully pull the cable out of the connector. Screws
60 Replacing Gateway 450RGH Components www.gateway.com 16If the notebook has a fingerprint reader, use two fingers to carefully unplug the fingerprint reader connector from the notebook. 17Lift the palm rest assembly completely from the notebook. 18Place the new palm rest assembly onto the notebook, then snap the assembly into place. 19Pull up on the touchpad connector to make sure that it is in the raised position. 20Slide the end of the touchpad cable into the touchpad connector. 21Use two fingers to press down on the touchpad connector tabs. This locks the touchpad cable into the touchpad connector. 22Replace all of the palm rest screws. Use the two shortest screws to secure the top-rear corners of the palm rest, which are near the LCD panel hinges. 23If the notebook has a fingerprint reader, use two fingers to carefully plug the fingerprint reader connector into the notebook. 24Reassemble the notebook. 25Replace the main battery and secondary battery (if installed). Connect the AC adapter and modem and network cables, then turn on the notebook. ImportantThe touchpad cable should slide easily into the touchpad connector. The cable is oriented correctly if it is not twisted.

63 Replacing the fingerprint reader www.gateway.com 15Remove the three screws that secure the fingerprint reader shield and the attached EMI shield to the notebook. 16Turn the fingerprint reader assembly so that the board is facing up. 17Remove the single screw that secures the board to the fingerprint reader shield. 18Place the new board on the fingerprint reader shield, aligning the holes for the screw. Secure the board to the fingerprint reader shield with the single screw. 19Replace the three screws that secure the fingerprint reader shield to the notebook. 20Reassemble the notebook. 21Replace the main battery and secondary battery (if installed). Connect the AC adapter and modem and network cables, then turn on the notebook. Screws
