1 Replacing the Gateway 200ARC Keyboard www.gateway.com Replacing the Gateway 200ARC Keyboard This package includes a replacement keyboard for your Gateway 200ARC notebook and these printed instructions. Tools you need You need a small Phillips and a small flat-blade screwdriver to replace the keyboard. Preventing static electricity discharge The components inside your notebook are extremely sensitive to static electricity, also known as electrostatic discharge (ESD). Before replacing the keyboard, follow these guidelines: ■Turn off your notebook. ■Wear a grounding wrist strap (available at most electronics stores) and attach it to a bare metal part of your workbench or other grounded connection. ■Touch a bare metal surface on your workbench or other grounded object. WarningESD can permanently damage electrostatic discharge-sensitive components in your notebook. Prevent ESD damage by following ESD guidelines every time you replace the keyboard. WarningTo avoid exposure to dangerous electrical voltages and moving parts, turn off your notebook and unplug the power cord and modem and network cables and remove the battery before opening the case. WarningTo prevent risk of electric shock, do not insert any object into the vent holes of the notebook.
2www.gateway.com ■Unplug the power cord and the modem and network cables. ■Remove the battery. For more information, see “Changing batteries” in your user’s guide. ■Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove any PC Cards. Before working with notebook components, follow these guidelines: ■Avoid static-causing surfaces such as carpeted floors, plastic, and packing foam. ■Remove components from their antistatic bags only when you are ready to use them. Do not lay components on the outside of antistatic bags because only the inside of the bags provide electrostatic protection. ■Always hold components by their edges. Avoid touching the edge connectors. Never slide components over any surface. Removing the keyboard To remove the keyboard: 1Follow the instructions under “Preventing static electricity discharge” on page 1. 2Turn off your notebook. 3Remove any PC Cards. 4Disconnect the AC adapter and modem and network cables. 5Disconnect the optional port replicator. 6Turn your notebook over so the bottom is facing up. 7Remove the battery.
3 Replacing the Gateway 200ARC Keyboard www.gateway.com 8With a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the two keyboard screws and put them in a safe place. 9Turn your notebook over so the top is facing up. 10Open the LCD panel to the normal viewing position. Screws
4www.gateway.com 11Insert the small flat-blade screwdriver in front of the keyboard in the locations shown and gently pull the three spring-loaded tabs toward you. The keyboard will spring up slightly. 12While lifting the front of the keyboard, slide the keyboard toward you to release the five tabs at the back of the keyboard. Ta b s
5 Replacing the Gateway 200ARC Keyboard www.gateway.com 13Lift the back edge of the keyboard, then slowly rotate it toward you so it lies keys-down on top of your notebook. Be careful not to damage the LCD panel.
6www.gateway.com 14Using two fingers, slide the plastic keyboard connector clamp forward. After the keyboard connector clamp is in the forward position, gently pull the keyboard cable out of the connector. Be careful not to touch or damage any other components. Installing the keyboard To install the keyboard: 1Place the new keyboard keys-down on your notebook with the space bar away from you. 2Locate the keyboard connector clamp and pull forward on it to verify that it is in the forward position. 3Slide the end of the keyboard cable into the keyboard connector. 4Using two fingers, press backward on the keyboard connector clamp. This locks the keyboard cable into the keyboard connector. 5Rotate the keyboard toward the LCD panel until the keyboard is almost face-up.
7 Replacing the Gateway 200ARC Keyboard www.gateway.com 6Insert the tabs on the back of the keyboard under the keyboard bezel. 7Gently press the front of the keyboard down until the spring loaded tabs click into place and the keyboard is flat all the way across. The keyboard should easily fall into place. Be careful not to damage the LCD panel. 8Close the LCD panel.
8www.gateway.com 9Turn your notebook over so the bottom is facing up. 10Replace the two keyboard screws. 11Replace the battery. 12Connect the power adapter and modem and network cables, then turn on your notebook.
