25 First Steps Display Settings Display Settings The camera is equipped with an electronic viewfi nder (EVF) and an LCD monitor (LCD). Choosing a Display Choosing a Display Press the VIEW button to cycle through displays as shown below. EE EYE SENSOR EYE SENSOR: Automatic display selection using eye sensor LCD EVFEVF EVF ONLY: Viewfi nder only EVF ONLY + E: Viewfi nder only; eye sensor turns display on or off EVF LCDLCD ONLY: LCD monitor only The Eye Sensor The Eye Sensor The eye sensor turns the viewfi nder on when you put your eye to the viewfi nder and turns it off when you take your eye away (note that the eye sensor may respond to objects other than your eye or to light shining directly on the sensor). 26 Display Settings The Viewfi nder Display The Viewfi nder Display When ON is selected for A SCREEN SET-UP > EVF AUTOROTATE DISPLAYS in the setup menu ( P 108), the indicators in the viewfi nder automatically rotate to match camera orientation. Rotate the diopter adjustment control until the viewfi nder display is in sharp focus. Diopter adjustment control Adjusting Display BrightnessAdjusting Display Brightness The brightness and hue of the viewfi nder and LCD monitor can be adjusted using the options under A SCREEN SET-UP in the setup menu. Choose EVF BRIGHTNESS or EVF COLOR to adjust viewfi nder brightness or hue (P 108), LCD BRIGHTNESS or LCD COLOR to do the same for the LCD monitor (P 108).

28 The DISP/BACK Button ■ Customizing the Standard Display To choose the items shown in the standard display: 1 Display standard indicators. Press the DISP/BACK button until standard indicators are displayed. 2 Select DISP. CUSTOM SETTING . Select A SCREEN SET-UP > DISP. CUSTOM SETTING in the setup menu. 3 Choose items. Brightness is shown by the horizontal axis, the number of pixels by the vertical axis. Overexposed: Pixels are clustered on the right side of the graph. Underexposed: Pixels are clustered on the left side of the graph.

31 Basic Photography and Playback Taking Photographs 2 Ready the camera.Hold the camera steady with both hands and brace your elbows against your sides. Shaking or unsteady hands can blur your shots. To prevent pictures that are out of focus or too dark (underexposed), keep your fi ngers and other objects away from the lens, fl ash, and AF-assist illuminator. 3 Frame the picture. Lenses with Zoom Rings Lenses with Zoom Rings Use the zoom ring to frame the picture in the display. A Zoom ring 4 Focus. Frame the picture with your sub- ject in the center of the display and press the shutter button halfway to focus. R If the subject is poorly lit, the AF-assist illumina- tor may light ( P 93). If the camera is able to focus, it will beep twice and the focus indicator and area in focus will glow green. Focus and exposure will lock while the shutter button is pressed halfway. If the camera is unable to focus, the focus frame will turn red, s will be displayed, and the fo- cus indicator will blink white. 5 Shoot. Smoothly press the shutter button the rest of the way down to take the picture.
32 Viewing Pictures Viewing Pictures Viewing Pictures Full Frame Viewing Pictures Full Frame Pictures can be viewed in the viewfi nder or LCD monitor. When taking important pictures, take a test shot and check the results. To view pictures full frame, press a. 100-0001 Additional pictures can be viewed by pressing the selector left or right or rotating the front command dial. Press the selector or rotate the dial right to view pictures in the order re- corded, left to view pictures in reverse order. Keep the selector pressed to scroll rapidly to the desired frame. R Pictures taken using other cameras are marked with a m (“gift image”) icon to warn that they may not display correctly and that playback zoom may not be available. Favorites: Rating Pictures Favorites: Rating Pictures To rate the current picture, press DISP/BACK and press the selector up and down to select from zero to fi ve stars.
