Whenthecaravan is ontow,therefrigeratorshouldbe operatedelectrically,i.e.fromthe12Vbatteryin thetowingvehicle, andnotbymeansofbottledgas. STARTING THEREFRIGERATOR(see fig. 2) Before usingyourrefrigeratorforthefirsttime,itisadvisabletowash.theinteriorand its accessories as describedlaterunderCleaning. Thebottledgasequipmentincludes a Piezocrystallightingdevicewhichcreates a sparkover theburnerwhenthebutton(4) is pushed infully.Nobatteriesorflintsare required tooperatethislighter.Beforestartingtherefrigerator,always checkthatthealternativemethodofoperationisoffastherefrigeratorshouldnotbeoperatedbybothmeans atthesametime.I fthecaravan istobestationaryforaperiod,checkthattherefrigeratoris level. .~ ThisapplianceconformswithE.E.C.Directive76i8a9relatingtoradiointerference. a gas bottle,itmaybe necessary to push in theknobappreciablylongertoclear all the air. Electric OperationThedualvoltageelectricequipmentisforoperationfromthe 12voltbatteryin the carwhenthecaravan is ontow,orfrommainselectricitywhen a220to240Va.c.supply,withsatisfactoryearthing, is available on a site.Beforeusing therefrigeratoronelectricity,makesurethattheelectricitysupplyissuitablefortherefrigerator.Itisimportanttounderstandthat12voltoperationisonlyintendedtobe usedwhilethe car engine.isrunningand ischarging thebattery,otherwisethebatterymay/bedisChargedto apointwhereitwillnotrestartthe engine.(Thecurrentdrainat12Vis 8amps).When at restformorethanashortpeAod,the caravanshouldbe levelled and therefrigeratorswitchedovertomainsvoltage,orthe12Vsupplyswitchedoffand therefrigeratorstarted up onbottledgas. Beforeconnectingto a mains voltagesupply,itismostimportanttomakecertainthatthecircuitto,and in, thecaravanisproperlyandeffectivelyearthed.,Whenoperating onmains voltage, thetemperaturein therefrigeratoristhermostetlceuv.controlledandcan beadjusted by meansoftheknob(7) ofthethermostat.The12Vcircuitisnotthermostaticallycontrolledand thecoQJingunitwilloperateall thetimetherefrigeratorisconnectedto12Vandswitchedon.12Voperationis,therefore,onlyintendedtobeusedforrelativelyshortperiods,Le:whenthe caravan is ontow.Itisnotintendedforextendedperiodsofusefromacontinuous12Vsupply,oth~rwise.thefreshfoodcompartmentmaybecometoocoldforthesatisfaCtory florageoffreshfoodsanddrinks.Forconnectionto the12Vsupply,atwo-wayterminalblockis locatedbehindtheright-handendofthecontrolpanel (1, fig. 1) at thetopofthe refrigerator.Forconnectionto a220-240VelectricitsuI,therefrigerator isprovie Wit a -core mains lead w icISintenedforconnectionto aproperlyearthedplugand socketoutlet.IntheUnitedKingdom,thefollowingplugconnectioninstructionsmustbeobserved.IMPORTANT:The wires in the mains leadofthis appliance arecolouredinaccordancewiththefollowingcode.GREEN-AND-YELLOWEARTHBLUENEUTRALBROWNLIVEAs the coloursofthewiresmavnotcorrespondwiththecolouredmarkingsidentifyingtheterminalsinyourpfug,proceed asfollows:ThewirewhichiscolouredGREEN-AND-YELLOWmustbe con nectedtotheterminalin theplugwhichismarkedwiththeletterE or by the earthsymbol~orcolouredgreen orgreen-and-yellow. ThewirewhichiscolouredBLUEmustbe connectedtothe terminalwhichismarkedwiththeletterN orcolouredblack.ThewirewhichiscolouredBROWNmustbe connectedtotheterminalwhichismarkedwiththeletterL orcolouredred.WARNING-THISAPPLIANCEMUSTBEEARTHED.In theUnitedKingdom,theplugorcircuittotherefrigeratormustbefittedwitha fusenotgreater than5 amps.Ifa 13amp.(B.S.1363)fused-plug is used,itshouldbefittedwitha 3ampfuse. Inothercountries,the fuseratingwilldepend onlocalpractice.Duringinstallation,asuitable socketoutletforthemainsvoltagesupplyshould have beenfittedin the caravan, neartherefrigerator,in apositionreadily accessible to the user. In theUnitedKinqdorn.>allmains voltagewiringinthecaravanmustbeinstalled inaccord ancewithI.E.E.regulations,includingthe useofanoutletandcouplertoBS4343/CEE17.Tostarttherefrigeratoronelectricity,seethatthe gascontrolknob(5) is atOFF,turnthe voltage selectorswitch(6)tothevoltage required,thenconnecttherefrigeratortotheappropriatevoltage supply. Ifon mains voltage(220-240V),turnthethermostatknob(7)tosettingNo. 3 or 4. TEMPERATURE REGULATIONAfterstartingup therefrigerator,itwilltakeaboutanhourbeforethereare signsofcooling.Whenoperatingon mains voltageelectricity,therefrigeratoristhermostaticallycontrolledand thethermostatknob(7)~;ouldbe settoNo. 3 or 4.Thiswillmaintaina suitabletemperaturein therefrigeratorandfrozenfoodstoragecompartmentforgeneral usebut,inhotweather, orifmorecoolingisrequired, theknobshouldbeturnedtoahighernumber.Iflesscoolingisrequired,theknobshouldbeturnedtoalowernumber.(Thisdoesnotapplyto12voltoperationwhichisnotthermostaticallycontrolled).Foroperationon gas, therefrigeratorshouldbestartedoffwiththe gascontrol(5) set atMAX.This.wi~.~providesuitable temperatures in therefrigeratorinwarmweathJ~r,butifthe freshfoodcompartmentbecomestoocold,especially incOolerweather,turnthe gascontrolknobtoMIDorMIN.Remembettoreturnittoahigher setting,,whennecessary,-iftheweatherbecomeswarmagainforinstance . Because ofthe hazards associatedwiththeuseofcontinuouslyoperating bottled-gas applianceswithopen-flame burnersindifficultto-ventilateconfinedspaces, andotherconsiderations,Electroluxdonotrecommendtheinstallationoftheirbottled-gas caravan refrigerators on boats, and refrigeratorssoinstalledwillnotbe coveredbytheCompanysguarantee.If,however, aboatinstallationisplannedfortherefrigerator,reference shouldbe madetoBritishStandard5482Part 3,1979and to the ThamesWaterAuthorityLaunchDigestandLaunchSpecification.Also,currentGuideLinespublished by localWaterAuthorities,or theShipand BoatBuildersNationalFederation.ItshouldbenotedthatspecialMarineRefrigerators areavailablefromElectroluxforuse on boats. LEVELWhen therefrigeratorisoperating,refrigeranttricklesthroughthecoolingunitundertheinfluenceofgravity.Toenable asatisfactoryflowofrefrigerantto take place, theunitmustbe level inbothdirections(whenitisstationary),otherwiserefrigerantcanaccumulate inpocketsand thecoolingprocess may beimpaired.Acontinuousrollingandpitchingmotionasoccurs in a caravan ontowwi11notnormallyaffectoperation,butwhenthe caravan is at restformorethanabouthalfanhouritmustbe levelled, inbothdirections,sothattheice-tray shelfinside thefrozenfoodstoragecompartmentis level. GAS PRESSURE, BURNER,JET,ANDGAS CONTROL VALVEThecombinedgascontrolvalve andflamefailuredevice (5,fig. 2), andjetandburner(9&10, fig. 4),mustall be of thecorrecttypeor sizeforthe gas and gas pressurewhichyouuse. The gas pressure isdeterminedbythetypeofregulatorfittedtoyourgasbottle,andthismay vary accordingtotheStandardadoptedin thecountrycon cerned. In theUnitedKingdom,andmanyotherpartsofEurope,the standard pressures usedforbutaneandpropaneare asshownin section 1ofthetablebelow.InGermanyandAustria,the higher pressure showninsection 2ofthetableusuallyapplies.Itis essentialthatareliable pressure regulator, settodeliverno more than theappropriatepressure shownin thetable,isfitteddirectlytothe gasbottle.Needle valveoperated gascontroltaps areNOTsuitableforusewiththisrefrigeratorandmustnotbeused as asubstitutefora pressure regulator.Beforeusing therefrigerator,checkfromthe labelattacneo to Itthatthe gasequipmentiscorrectfortheqasand gas pressuretobe used.Ifitisnot,theburner,jet,andcombinedgascontrolvalve and flamefailuredevicemustbe changedforthecorrectsizeortypein accordancewiththetablebelow.Forfuturereference, any changes madeshouldbe recorded on or beside the datalabel. Bottled GasOperation - Lightingtheburner(See fig. 2)1. Seethatthevoltage selectorswitch(6) is setwith0againsttheindicatormark.Ensurethatg~sisavailablefromthebottleandturnonanytaps in.thesupplylinetotherefrigerator.**2.Turnthegascontrolknob(5) sothatMAXisoppositetheindicatormark.3.f!!!h..!!!fullythe gascontrolknob(5)forabout5second,toallowairto clearfromthepipeline.(\Vhenstartinqinitiallv,or~fterchanlfU)..1,.,~"**NOTE:On some models,thegascontr~~ktfobismark0,3,2,1insteadofOFF:AX,MID,Mlr.t ,
FROZENFOODSTORAGE COMPARTMENTThefrozenfoodstoragecompartmenthas anetvolumeof3.7litres(0.13cubicfeet)and has atwo-starc1assificationOCjJ.Thismeansthat,providedtheelectricthermostatorgascontrolis set as describedunderTemperatureRegulation,thefrozenfoodstoragecompartmentwillbemaintainedat atemperatureof-120C(10F), orbelow.Undertheseconditions,mosttypesoffrozenfoodcan bestoredin thecompartmentforuptoonemonth.Whenstoringfrozenfood,donotsetthegascontrolattooIowasetting.Reduceitonlyiffoodstuffsinthefreshfoodcompartmentbecometoocold.Thepermissiblelengthofstoragetimecannotbepreciselystated asthisvariesverymuchwiththenatureofthepackagedquick-frozenfoodstored- vegetables,fish,meat,fruitanddairyproducts.Itisthereforeimportanttotakenoteofthefoodmanufacturersestimateofthepermissible storagetimesof hisproducts.Thisestimate,whichshouldbemarkedon eachfrozenfoodpackage,takesintoaccountinevitablevariationsduringevery-dayoperationwhichmayleadtochanges in taste andcolour.Iffrozenfoodisallowedtothaw,i.e.thepacksbecomewetandlimp,noattemptshouldbe made tostoreorre-freeze -itshouldbeconsumedwithin24hours.Thefrozenfoodstoragecompartmentisforstoringquickfrozenfoods,ice-cream andmakingice.Itisnotintendedforthequickfreezingoffoodstuffs.Careshouldbetakenwhenhandlingandconsumingwaterices(e.q.icedlollies) ta ken directlyfromthefrozenfoodstoragecompartmentbecauseofthepossibilityofcoldburn(frostbite)whensuch ices are atverylowtemperatures.. Neverputbottlesorcansofcarbonated(gassy)drinksinthefrozenfoodstoragecompartmentastheymayburstifthegas isforcedoutby freezing.( STORING FOOD IN THE REFRIGERATORTopreventdryingoutandthetransferofflavoursfromonefoodtoanother,alwaysstorefoodsincoveredcontainersorp~t~cbags, orwraptheminwaxedpaper..Tallbottlescan beplacedinthelowerdoorshelfbymovingtheupperdoorshelftoits storagepositionatthetopofthedoor.Theplastictraycan beremovedfromtheuppercabinetshelftomake-roomforbottlesandothertallitemsin thecabinet.!Donotleave therefrigeratordooropenlongerthannecessarv.NEVERPUTHOTFOOD~INTHEREFRIGERATOR.,.Whenever possible,itis ofadvantagetoore-coolyourrefrigeratorwithitscontentsbyrunningitonbottledgas or mainselectricityforafewhours,orovernight,beforestartingoutfromhome.Topreventunduemovementofbottlesetc.in therefrigeratorwhenlionthemove,crumpledpiecesofcleanpapermaybewedgedtemporarilybetweenthe various items. TWO-POSITIONTRAVELCATCHThetravelcatchatthetopofthedoorhastwoalternativepositions.Thefirst(fig.3a)holdsthedoorttghtlyclosed andshouldbe usedwhentravelling.Thesecondposition(fig.3b)keepsthedoorslightlyopenand isintendedtobe engagedwhentherefrigeratorisoutofuse sothataircancirculateinside. ICE-MAKINGFilltheice-traywithwatertowithin5mmfromthetop,andplaceitontheshelfinthetopofthefrozenfoodstoragecompartment.When ice hasformed,thetraycan be releasedfromtheshelfsimplybyliftingonecorner.Icewillbemademorequicklyifthegascontrolorelectricthermostatknob(excepton12V)isturnedtoMAX.Remembertoreturntheknobtoitsnormalsettingwhenice hasformedotherwisefoodinthecabinetmaybecometoocold. DEFROSTINGFrostwillgraduallyformon and inthefrozenfoodstoragecompartmentand onthefins atthesideofthecompartment.Itis amistaketoassumethatanaccumulationoffrostgives acoldercabinetthereforetherefrigeratorshouldbedefrostedregularly-aboutonce aweekor ten days,dependingontheconditionsofuse. Todefrost,turnthe gascontrolknob(5)toOFF,orthevoltage selectorswitch(6)to0,dependingonwhichoperationis being used.Removetheice-tray,food,etc.:wrapfrozenfoodsin several layersofclean newspaper andplace thepackage in acoolplace.Todefrostasquicklyaspossible, asmalldishofhot(notboiling)watermaybe placed on theice-trayshelf,and abowlofhotwateron acabinetshelf,changingthehotwateras necessaryuntilallfrosthasmelted. Donotplacedishesofhotwateronthebottomofthefrozenfoodstoragecompartment,anddonotattempttodefrostmorequicklywithanelectricfireorotherformofheatasthismaydamagetheplasticsurfaces.Defrostwaterwillrunvia atubeatthebackintothedripcollectorfixedtotherearoftherefrigerator,whereitwillevaporateintothecirculatingair., When allfrosthasmelted,wipedrythefrozenfoodstoragecompartmentandcabinetinterior,thenre-start therefrigerator,settingthe gascontrolknoborvoltageselectorswitchandthermostatknobtotheirrespectivepositions.Replace thefresh andfrozenfood,butwaituntilthecabinethascooleddownagainbeforemakingice.Rememberthatifthetemperatureoffrozenfoodisallowedtoriseundulyduringdefrosting,itsstoragelifemaybeshortened. .----------- 4 CLEANINGTHE REFRIGERATORCleantherefrigeratorthoroughlyatintervalsasnecessary.Turnoffthegas ordisconnectfromtheelectricitysupply,dependingonwhichisbeingused,emptythecabinetanddefrostasdescribedearlier.Therefrigeratorand its accessoriesmaythenbe cleanedwithasoftclothwrungoutin aweaksolutionofbicarbonateofsoda.Finally,wipeoverwithaclothwrungoutinwarmwateronlyanddrywitha cleancloth.Donotwashanyplasticparts inwaterthatismorethanhandhotanddonotexposethemtodryheat.NEVERUSESTRONGCHEMICALSORABRASIVECLEANINGMATERIALSONANYPARTOFTHEREFRIGERATOR.Replace the accessories andrestarttherefrigerator. WHEN NOT IN USEWheneveryourrefrigeratoris to beoutofuseforaperiod,turnoffthe gas, ordisconnectfromtheelectricitysupply,asapplicable.Emptythecabinetanddefrostasdescribedearlier.Clean andthoroughlydrytheinteriorand accessories andleave thedoorslightlyopenbyen gaging thealternativepositionofthetravel catch (fig.3b).Ifthisisnotdone,the air insidemaygo stale givingrisetoanunpleasantodourwhichcouldbedifficulttoremoveat alaterdate.Emptyanddrytheice-tray. CONSUMPTIONItisnotpossibletogive preciseconsumptionfiguresformainsvoltageelectricity,as thesevarydependingonindividualconditionsofuse.Thefigures inthefollowingtablemay,however,betakenas aguide. FLUEBAFFLEThefluebafflemustbe inpositionin thecentraltubeoftheboiler,over theburner,suspendedon itssupportwiresothattheloweredgeofthebaffleis 75mm(3inches) above thebottomof thetube.Ifthebaffleismissing orincorrectlylocated,thecoolingunitwillnotoperateproperlyonbottledgas. CLEANINGFLUE,BURNER,ANDJET(see fig. 4) The appearanceoftheburnerflameshouldbecheckedat leastoncea year.Todothis,turnthe gascontrolknobtoMAX,whenthecolouroftheflameshouldbepredominantlyblue.Ifthisisnotthecase,therefrigeratorshouldbeemptied,disconnected,andremovedfromtherecess, andtheflue,burnerandjetcleaned asdescribedbelow.(Theoutercoveroftheflueoutletwillhavetoberemovedandtheflueextensiontubewithdrawnfromtheoutsidebeforetherefrigeratorcan bemoved).Whentherefrigeratorisoutoftherecess,proceedasfollows. 1.RemovethelazvTfluetop,then,fromtopofcentralfluetubeofboiler,liftoutthefluebaffleon itssupportwire.2.Withdoortravel catchengaged, laycabinetonleft-handside (i.e.burnernear thefloor)on sheetsofnewspaper. 3.Disconnectgaspipefromburnerbyundoingunion(8),thenpulloutburnerjet(9).CleanjetbywashingitinWhiteSpiritoralcohol,thenblowingthroughwithair.Donotunderanycircumstancesprickoutthejet.Theorificeinthejethas beencarefullydesigned.Itisverydelicateandanydamagetotheorificecouldaffectsafetyandperformance.4.Removescrewholdingburnerbracket(11)toboiler,releasebrackettonguesfromslotinboiler,thencarefullymoveburnerbracketassemblytoone side, clearofthefluetube.5. Cleanburnerandadjacentcomponentsofsootetc.withoutdisturbingtheirrelativepositions.6. Cleanfluetubeofboiler-a specialfluebrush(partno.151404)isavailable as anextraforthispurpose. 7. Reassembleequipment,engaging tonguesintopofburnerbracket(11)incorrespondingslotinbottomofboilerbeforereplacingfixingscrew. Gasunionsmustbetightbutnotovertightened.8.Operatebutton(4)ofigniterwhilstwatchingtocheckthatsparkjumpsfromelectrodetoburnerhead. (Seenextsection).9.ReferringtoitemCheckingforGasLeaks,re-installrefrigerator,lightburnerand leave ontesttoensurethatitoperatesproperly.
