Back to Contents Page Module Cover Removing the Module Cover Replacing the Module Cover Removing the Module Cover 1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin . 2. Remove the two screws on the module cover. 3. Lift the cover off the computer at an angle as shown in the figure. Replacing the Module Cover 1. Align the tabs on the module cover to the bottom of the computer and gently replace the module cover. 2. Replace and tighten the two screws on the module cover. 3. Slide the battery into the battery bay, until it clicks into place. 4. Slide the battery - lock latch to the lock position. Back to Contents Page Before You Begin Recommended Tools Turning Off Your Computer Before Working Inside Your Computer This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the following conditions exist: l You have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Before Working Inside Your Computer . l You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer . l A component can be replaced or — if purchased separately — installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order. Recommended Tools The procedures in this document may require the following tools: l Small flat - blade screwdriver l Phillips screwdriver l Flash BIOS update program CD Turning Off Your Computer 1. Save and close all open files and exit all open programs. 2. Shut down the operating system: Windows ® XP: Click Start ® ® Shut down . Ubuntu ® Dell Desktop : Click ® Quit ® Shut down . Ubuntu ® Classic Desktop : Click ® Shut down . 3. Ensure that the computer and all attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold the power button until the computer turns off. Before Working Inside Your Computer Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your own personal safety. NOTE: Flash BIOS update program CD ships only in certain countries when you replace the system board. NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer. CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional safety best practices information, see the Regulatory Compliance Homepage at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance. NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins. NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. NOTICE: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull - tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.

1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched. 2. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer ). 3. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked), undock it. See the documentation that came with your docking device for instructions. 4. Press and eject any installed cards from the 3 - in - 1 memory card reader. 5. Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer. 6. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets. 7. Turn the computer over. 8. Slide the battery - bay release latch and the battery - lock latch towards the outer edges. 9. Slide the battery out of the battery bay. 10. Turn the computer top - side up, open the display, and press the power button to ground the system board. NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you service the computer. NOTICE: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular Dell computer. Back to Contents Page Flashing the BIOS Flashing the BIOS From a CD Flashing the BIOS From the Solid - state Drive in Windows ® XP Flashing the BIOS From the Solid - state Drive in Ubuntu ® If a BIOS - update program CD is provided with the new system board, flash the BIOS from the CD. If you do not have a BIOS - update program CD, flash the BIOS from the solid - state drive. Flashing the BIOS From a CD 1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly. 2. Insert the BIOS - update program CD, and restart the computer. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the computer will automatically reboot. 3. Press during POST to enter the system setup program. 4. Press and to reset the computer defaults. 5. Press , select Save changes and reboot , and press to save configuration changes. 6. Remove the flash BIOS - update program CD from the drive and restart the computer. Flashing the BIOS From the Solid - state Drive in Windows XP 1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in, the main battery is properly installed, and a network cable is attached. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support.dell.com . 4. Click Download Now to download the file. 5. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement . The File Download window appears. 6. Click Save this program to disk and then click OK . The Save In window appears. 7. Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop , and then click Save . 8. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears. The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file. 9. Double - click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen. Flashing the BIOS From the Solid - state Drive in Ubuntu NOTE: Your computer may or may not ship with an external optical drive. Use an external optical drive or any external storage device for the procedures that involve discs. NOTE: If you use a BIOS - update program CD to flash the BIOS, set up the computer to boot from a CD before inserting the CD. NOTE: Your computer may or may not ship with an external optical drive. Use an external optical drive or any external storage device for the procedures that involve discs.

1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and the main battery is properly installed. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. Click ® Places ® Documents . 4. Create a new folder and name it BIOS . 5. Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support.dell.com . 6. Click Download Now to download the file. 7. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement . The File Download window appears. 8. Click Save this program to disk and then click OK . The Save In window appears. 9. Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Documents ® BIOS , and then click Save . 10. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears. 11. Open the terminal command line application and proceed as follows: a. Type sudo - s b. Type your password c. Type cd Documents d. Type cd BIOS e. Type ./910A00 flash start... string appears. Back to Contents Page Internal Card With Bluetooth Wireless Technology Removing the Card Replacing the Card If you ordered a card with Bluetooth wireless technology with your computer, it is already installed. Removing the Card 1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin . 2. Remove the module cover (see Removing the Module Cover ). 3. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard ). 4. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest ). 5. Turn the palm rest over. 6. Remove the two screws that secure the card to the palm rest. 7. Lift the card out of the palm rest. Replacing the Card 1. Insert card into the slot and tighten the two screws. 2. Turn the palm rest over. 3. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest ). 4.
