    WARNING:Beforeyoumakeaninspection,adjust-

    sparkplug.Removethewirefromthesparkplugto 
    preventtheenginefromstartingbyaccident. 
    Ifadrivebeltbecomeswornorafterinstallationofanewdrivebelt, 
    thespeedcontrolpedalmayneedanadjustment.Therearetwo 
    indicationsthatanadjustmentisneeded.First,whenthespeed 
    controlpedalisfullydepressedtheunitdoesnotachievetopspeed. 
    Second,whenthespeedcontrolpedalisreleased,theunitdoesnot 
    cometoacompletestop. 
    1.Checktheroutingoftheenginedrivebelt.Makesurethebelt 
    isinstalledcorrectlyandisinsideallthebeltguides. 
    2.Removethecotterpinandwasherfromtheadjustablenut 
    (Figure36). 
    3. 
    Iftheunitisnotachievingtopspeed,thenturntheadjustable 
    nuttowardstheendofthedrivelink.Iftheunitdoesnotcome 
    toacompletestop,thenturntheadjustablenuttowardthe 
    centerofthedrivelink. 
    4.Assembletheadjustablenuttothepivotlink.Fastenwiththe

    Iftheenginedrivebeltisloose,theclutchwillslipwhen;(1)going 
    upahill,(2)pullingaheavytoad,or(3)theunitwillnotmoveforward. 
    Adjusttheclutchasfollows. 
    WARNING:Beforeyoumakeaninspection,adjust- 
    _ment,orrepairtotheunit,disconnectthewiretothe 
    sparkplug.Removethewirefromthesparkplugto 
    preventtheenginefromstartingbyaccident. 
    1.Checktheroutingoftheenginedrivebelt.Makesurethebelt 
    isinstalledcorrectlyandisinsideallthebeltguides. 
    2.Removethecotterpinandwasherfromtheadjustablenut 
    (Figure37). 
    3.Disconnecttheadjustablenutfromtheclutchpivotlink. 
    4.Pulltheclutchpivotlinkforwarduntiltight. 
    5.Pulltheclutchrodtowardtherearandturntheadjustablenut 
    untiltheadjustablenutisalignedwiththerearoftheslot. 
    6.Assembletheadjustablenuttotheclutchpivotlink.Fasten 
    withthewasherandcotterpin. 
    7.Ifthebeltstillslipsaftertheclutchhasbeenadjusted,thenthe 
    motiondrivebeltiswornordamagedandmustbereplaced.

    THEFUELSYSTEM 
    WARNING:Donotdrainthegasolineinsideabuild-  ingornearafire.Donotsmokebecausethefumes 
    fromthefuelcancauseanexplosion. 
    Itisimportanttopreventgumdepositsfromforminginessentialfuel 
    systempartssuchasthecarburetor,fuelfilter,fuelhoseortank 
    duringstorage.Also,alcoholblendedfuels(calledgasoholorusing 
    ethanolormethanol)canattractmoisturewhichleadstoseparation 
    andformationofacidsduringstorage.Acidicgascandamagethe 
    fuelsystemofanenginewhileinstorage. 
    Toavoidengineproblems,thefuelsystemshouldbeemptiedbefore 
    storageof30daysorlonger.Followtheseinstructions: 
    NOTE:Fuelstabilizer(likeSTA-BIL)isanacceptable 
    alternativeinreducingtheformationoffuelguminthefueltank 
    andthegasolinestoragecontainer.Alwaysfollowthemixratio 
    locatedonthecontainerofstabilizer.Runtheengineatleast10 
    minutesafteraddingthestabilizertoallowthestabilizerto 
    reachthecarburetor.Donotdrainthefueltankandcarburetor 
    ifstabilizerisused. 
    Ifyoudonotuseastabilizer,dothefollowing: 
    1.Starttheengine. 
    2.Runtheengineuntilthefueltankandthecarburetorareoutof 
    fuelandtheenginestops. 
    3.Donotleavefuelinthefueltankorthecarburetor.Thefuelcan 
    damagethefunctionofthefuelsystem. 
    1.Inspectthebelts.Ifthebeltsaredamagedorworn,replacewith

    2.Makesureallnuts,boltsandscrewsaretight.Inspectmoving 
    partsfordamage,breakageandwear.Replaceifnecessary.

    Emissioncontrolsystemson1995andlatermodelyearCaliforniasmalloff- 
    roadenginesarewarrantedfortwoyearsashereinafternoted.Inother 
    states,1997andlatermodelyearenginesarealsowarrantedfortwoyears. 
    If,duringsuchwarrantyperiod,anyemission-relatedpartonyourengineis 
    defectiveinmaterialsorworkmanship,thepartwillberepairedorreplaced 
    bySears,RoebuckandCo. 
    OWNERSWARRANTYRESPONSIBILITIES 
    Asthesmalloff-roadengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformance 
    oftherequiredmaintenancelistedinyourOwnersManual,butSears,Roe- 
    buckandCo.willnotdenywarrantysolelyduetothelackofreceiptsorfor 
    yourfailuretoprovidewrittenevidenceoftheperformanceofallscheduled 
    maintenance. 
    Asthesmalloff-roadengineowner,youshould,however,beawarethat 
    Sears,RoebuckandCo.maydenyyouwarrantycoverageifyoursmalloff- 
    roadengineorapartthereofhasfailedduetoabuse,neglect,impropermain- 
    tenanceorunapprovedmodifications. 
    Youareresponsibleforpresentingyoursmalloff-roadenginetoaSears, 
    RoebuckandCo.AuthorizedServiceOutletassoonasaproblemexists. 
    Thewarrantyrepairsshouldbecompletedinareasonableamountoftime,

    theECSWarrantyshallbewarrantedforanyremainderoftheECSWarranty

    inspectionasspeckedintheOwnersManualshallbewarrantedfortheECS 
    WarrantyPeriod.Astatementinsuchwritteninstructionstotheeffectofre-

    AnysuchpartrepairedorreplacedundertheECSWarrantyshallbewar-

    low.Anysuchemissions-relatedpartrepairedorreplacedundertheECS 
    Warranty,shallbewarrantedfortheremainderoftheECSWarrantyPeriod 
    priortothefirstscheduledreplacementpointforsuchemissions-related 
    part. 
    4.Repairorreplacementofanywarranted,emissions-relatedpartunder 
    thisECSWarrantyshallbeperformedatnochargetotheownerataSears, 
    RoebuckandCo.AuthorizedServiceOutlet. 
    5.Theownershallnotbechargedfordiagnosticlaborwhichleadstothede- 
    terminationthatapartcoveredbytheECSWarrantyisinfactdefective,pro- 
    videdthatsuchdiagnosticworkisperformedataSears,RoebuckandCo. 
    AuthorizedServiceOutlet. 
    6.Sears,RoebuckandCo.shallbeliablefordamagestootheroriginalen- 
    ginecomponentsorapprovedmodificationsproximatelycausedbyafailure 
    underwarrantyofanemission-relatedpartcoveredbytheECSWarranty.  
    						
    							  
    7.ThroughouttheECSWarrantyPeriod,Sears,RoebuckandCo.shall 
    maintainasupplyofwarrantedemission-relatedpartssufficienttomeetthe 
    expecteddemandforsuchemission-relatedparts. 
    8.AnySears,RoebuckandCo.authorizedandapprovedemission-related 
    replacementpartmaybeusedintheperformanceofanyECSWarranty 
    maintenanceorrepairandwillbeprovidedwithoutchargetotheowner.Such 
    useshallnotreduceSears,RoebuckandCo.ECSWarrantyobligations. 
    9.Unapprovedadd-onormodifiedpartsmaynotbeusedtomodifyorrepair 
    aSears,RoebuckandCo.engine.SuchusevoidsthisECSWarrantyand 
    shallbesufficientgroundsfordisallowinganECSWarrantyclaim.Sears, 
    RoebuckandCo.shallnotbeliablehereunderforfailuresofanywarranted 
    partsofaSears,RoebuckandCo.enginecausedbytheuseofsuchanun-
