MULCHINGMOWINGTIPS IMPORTANT:Forbestperformance, keepmowerhousingfreeofbuilt-up grassandtrash.SeeCLEANINGinthe Maintenancesectionofthismanual. •Thespecialmulchingbladewillrecut thegrassclippingsmanytimesand reducetheminsizesothatastheyfall ontothelawntheywilldisperseinto thegrassandnotbenoticed.Also,the mulchedgrasswillbiodegradequickly toprovidenutrientsforthelawn.Always mulchwithyourhighestengine(blade) speedasthiswillprovidethebestrecut- tingactionoftheblades. •Avoidcuttingyourlawnwhenitiswet. NOTE:Protectyourhandswithgloves and/orwrapbladewithheavycloth. 4.Removebladeboltbyturningcounter- clockwise. 5.Removeblade&attachinghardware (bolt,lockwasher&hardenedwasher). TOREPLACEBLADE 1.Positionbladeonthebladeadapter aligningthetwo(2)holesintheblade withtheraisedlugsontheadapter. 2.Besurethetrailingedgeofblade(op- positesharpedge)isuptowardthe engine. 3.Installthebladeboltwiththelock washerandhardenedwasherinto bladeadapterandcrankshaft. 4.Useblockofwoodbetweenbladeand lawnmowerhousingandtightenthe bladebolt,turningclockwise. •Therecommendedtighteningtorqueis 35-40ft.Ibs. IMPORTANT:Bladeboltisheattreated. Ifboltneedsreplacing,replaceonlywith approvedboltshownintheRepairParts sectionofthismanual. TOSHARPENBLADE NOTE:Wedonotrecommendsharp- eningtheblade-butifyoudo,besurethe bladeisbalanced.Anunbalancedblade willcauseeventualdamagetomoweror engine. •Thebladecanbesharpenedwithafile oronagrindingwheel.Donotattempt tosharpenwhileonthemower. •Tocheckbladebalance,driveanailinto abeamorwall.Leaveaboutoneinchof thestraightnailexposed.Placecenter holeofbladeovertheheadofthenail. Ifbladeisbalanced,itshouldremainin ahorizontalposition.Ifeitherendofthe blademovesdownward,sharpenthe heavyenduntilthebladeisbalanced. SelecttheoilsSAEviscositygrade accordingtoyourexpectedoperating temperature. Rocklawnmowerbackandforthtore- moveanyoiltrappedinsideofengine. 4.Wipeoffanyspilledoilfromlawn mowerorsideofengine. 5.Slowlypouroildowntheoilfillspout, stoppingeveryfewouncestocheckthe oillevelwiththedipstick. 6.Stopaddingoilwhenyoureachthe FULLmarkonthedipstick.Waita minutetoallowoiltosettle. 7.Continueaddingsmallamountsofoil, recheckingthedipstickuntiloillevel settlesatFULL.DONOToverfill,or enginewillsmokeheavilyfromthemuf- fleronstartup. 8.Alwaysbesuretoretightenoildipstick beforestartingengine. 9.Reconnectsparkplugwiretospark plug. AIRFILTER Yourenginewillnotrunproperlyandmay bedamagedbyusingadirtyairfilter. Replacetheairfiltercartridgeevery100 hoursofoperationoreveryseason,which- everoccursfirst.Serviceaircleanermore oftenunderdustyconditions. TOCLEANAIRFILTER 1.Loosenscrewandtiltcovertoremove. 2.Carefullyremovecartridge. 3.Cleanbygentlytappingonaflatsur- _iLface.Ifverydirty,replacecartridge. CAUTION:Petroleumsolvents,suchas kerosene,arenottobeusedtocleancar- tridge.Theymaycausedeteriorationofthe cartridge.Donotoilcartridge.Donotuse pressurizedairtocleanordrycartridge. 4.Installcartridge,thenreplacecover makingsurethetabsarealignedwith theslotsinthebackplate.Fasten screwsecurely. Sparkplugtypeandgapsettingareshown inthePRODUCTSPECIFICATIONS sectionofthismanual. IMPORTANT:Besurethegardenhoseis notroutedunderthelawnmowerhousing orentangledinthewheels. Hose 5.Turnonwatersupplyandcheckfor leaksatthefitting. Ifnoleaksarepresent,startengine(as describedintheOperationsectionof thismanual)andletenginerununtilthe undersideofthelawnmowerisclean. TOADJUSTHANDLE Yourhandlehasthree(3)heightpositions -adjusttoaheightthatsuitsyou. 1.Removeknobandcarriageboltonone sideofthelowerhandle. 2.Whileholdinghandleassembly, removeknobandcarriageboltfrom oppositeside,alignholeinhandlewith desiredholeinhandlebracketand reassembleboltandknobandtighten securely. 3.Alignoppositesideofhandlewith samepositioningholeandsecurewith boltandknob. Knob ENGINE ENGINESPEED Yourenginespeedhasbeenfactoryset.Do notattempttoincreaseenginespeedorit mayresultinpersonalinjury.Ifyoubelieve thatengineisrunningtoofastortooslow, takeyourmowertoaSearsorotherqualified servicecenterforrepairandadjustment. CARBURETOR Yourcarburetorisnotadjustable.Ifyour enginedoesnotoperateproperlyduetosus- pectedcarburetorproblems,takeyourlawn mowertoaSearsorotherqualifiedservice centerforrepairand/oradjustment. IMPORTANT:Nevertamperwiththeengine governor,whichisfactorysetforproperen- ginespeed.Overspeedingtheengineabove thefactoryhighspeedsettingcanbedanger- ous.Ifyouthinktheengine-governedhigh speedneedsadjusting,contactaSearsor otherqualifiedservicecenter,whichhas properequipmentandexperiencetomake anynecessaryadjustments. Immediatelyprepareyourlawnmowerfor storageattheendoftheseasonoriftheHandle unitwillnotbeusedfor30daysormore,bracket LAWNMOWER Whenlawnmoweristobestoredfora periodoftime,cleanitthoroughly,remove alldirt,grease,leaves,etc.Storeina clean,dryarea. 1.Cleanentirelawnmower(See CLEANINGintheMaintenancesec- tionofthismanual). 2.LubricateasshownintheMaintenance sectionofthismanual. 3.Besurethatallnuts,bolts,screws,and pinsaresecurelyfastened.Inspect movingpartsfordamage,breakage andwear.Replaceifnecessary. 4.Touchupallrustedorchippedpaint surfaces;sandlightlybeforepainting. IMPORTANT:Whenfoldingthehandlefor storageortransportation,besuretofold thehandleasshownoryoumaydamage thecontrolcables. ENGINE FUELSYSTEM IMPORTANT:Itisimportanttoprevent gumdepositsfromforminginessentialfuel systempartssuchascarburetor,fuelfilter, fuelhose,ortankduringstorage.Alcohol blendedfuels(calledgasoholorusing ethanolormethanol)canattractmoisture whichleadstoseparationandformationof acidsduringstorage.Acidicgascandamage thefuelsystemofanenginewhileinstorage. •Emptythefueltankbystartingtheen- gineandlettingitrununtilthefuellines andcarburetorareempty. •Neveruseengineorcarburetorcleaner productsinthefueltankorpermanent damagemayoccur. •Usefreshfuelnextseason. NOTE:Fuelstabilizerisanacceptableal- ternativeinminimizingtheformationoffuel gumdepositsduringstorage.Addstabilizer togasolineinfueltankorstoragecontainer. Alwaysfollowthemixratiofoundonstabilizer container.Runengineatleast10minutes afteraddingstabilizertoallowthestabilizerto reachthecarburetor.Donotemptythegas tankandcarburetorifusingfuelstabilizer. ENGINEOIL Drainoil(withenginewarm)andreplace withcleanengineoil.(SeeENGINEin theMaintenancesectionofthismanual). CYLINDER 1.Removesparkplug. 2.Pouroneounce(29ml)ofoilthrough sparkplugholeintocylinder. 3.Pullstarterhandleslowlyafewtimes todistributeoil. 4.Replacewithnewsparkplug. OTHER •Donotstoregasolinefromoneseason toanother. •Replaceyourgasolinecanifyourcan startstorust.Rustand/ordirtinyour gasolinewillcauseproblems. •Ifpossible,storeyourunitindoorsand coverittoprotectitfromdustanddirt. •Coveryourunitwithasuitableprotec- tivecoverthatdoesnotretainmoisture. Donotuseplastic.Plasticcannot breathe,whichallowscondensationto formandwillcauseyourunittorust.
