Insertonekeyintotheignitionslot.Be sureitsnapsintoplace.DONOTTURN KEY.Keepthesecondkeyinasafe place. •RotatethechokecontroltoH chokeONposition. •Connectthepowercordtotheswitchbox ontheengine. •Plugtheotherendofthepowercordinto athree-hole,grounded120voltA.C, receptacle. •Pushthepnmerbuttonwhilecoveringthe ventholeasfollows:(removefingerfrom primerbuttonbetweenprimes). Donotprimeiftemperatureisabove 50°F. Twotimesiftemperatureis50°Fto15°F. Fourtimesiftemperatureisbelow15°F. •Pushdownonthestarterbuttonuntilthe enginestarts.Donotcrankformorethan 10secondsatatime.Thiselectricstarter isthermallyprotected.Ifoverheateditwill stopautomaticallyandcanberestarted onlywhenithascooledtoasafe temperature(awaitofabout5to10 minutesisrequired). •Whentheenginestarts,releasethe starterbuttonandmovechokeleverto 1/2chokeposition.Whenengineruns smoothly,movechokelevertoNo ChokePosition. •Disconnectthepowercordfromthe receptaclefirstandfromtheswitchbox onengine. Makesuretowipeupanyspilledfuelbefore startingtheengine. Storegasolineinaclean,approvedcon- tainerandkeepthecapinplaceonthecon- tainer. FROZENRECOILSTARTER Ifthestarterisfrozenandwillnotturnengine: •Pullasmuchropeoutofthestarteras possible. •Releasethestarterhandleandletitsnap backagainstthestarter. Ifthestarterstillfailstoturnengine,repeat thetwopreviousstepsuntilthestarteren- gages.Thencontinuewiththedirectionsfor coldstart. Tohelppreventpossiblefreeze-upofrecoil starterandenginecontrols,proceedasfol- lowsaftereachsnowremovaljob. •Withtheenginerunning,pullthestarter ropehardwithacontinuousfullarm strokethreeorfourtimes.Pullingof starterrop_willproducea_oudclattering sound.Thisisnotharmfultotheengine orstarter. •Withtheenginenotrunning,wipeall snowandmoisturefromthecarburetor coverinareaofcontrollevers.Also movethrottlecontrol,chokecontrol,and starterhandleseveraltimes. SNOWTHROWINGTIPS •Formaximumsnowthrowerefficiency operateengineat(Full)throttle.Theen- gineisdesignedtodelivermaximum performanceatfullthrottleandshouldbe runatthispowersettingatalltimes. •Mostefficientsnowthrowingisaccom- plishedwhenthesnowisremoved immediatelyafteritfalls. •Forcompletesnowremoval,slightly overlapeachpathpreviouslytaken. •Thesnowshouldbedischargeddown windwheneverpossible. •Afterthesnowthrowingjobhasbeen completed,allowtheenginetoidlefora fewminutes,whichwiltmeltthesnow andaccumulatediceofftheengine. •Cleanthesnowthrowerthoroughlyafter eachuse. •Removeiceandsnowaccumulationand alldebdsfromtheentiresnowthrower, andflushwithwater(ifpossible)tore- moveallsaltorotherchemicals.Wipe snowthrowerdry. NOTE:Forextremecoldoperatingcondi- tionsof0°andbelow,useapartialsynthetic OW30motoroilforeasierstarting. NOTE:Althoughmulti-viscosityoilsim- provestartingincoldweather,thesemulti- viscosityoilswillresultinincreasedoil consumptionwhenusedabove32°1.Check yourengineoillevelmorefrequentlyto avoidpossibleenginedamagefromrunning lowonoil. NOTE:Whenevertheaugerbeltisreplaced, thecableswillneedtobeadjusted. TOADJUSTAUGERDRIVEBELT Beltstretchesduringnormaluse.Ifyour snowthrowerwillnotdischargesnow,ora squealingnoiseisheardwhenthe snowthrewerisputintodeepsnow,yourau- geridlerpulleymayneedtobeadjusted. •Checkthecontrolcablesforproperad- justment.(SeesectionforClutchControl CableAdjustmentonpage14). •Ifthecablesareadjustedcorrectlythen proceedwithadjustingtheidlerpulley. •Disconnectthesparkplugwire. •Removethebeltcover.(Seesecondfig- ureonthispage) •Witha9/16wrench,loosenthenutonthe idlerpulley.Movetheidlerpulleyintoward theenginepulleyapproximately1/8. •Tightennut. •Presstheaugerdrivelever.Checkthe tensiononthebelt(oppositeaugeridler pulley).Thebeltshoulddeflectabout1/2 withmoderatepressure(seefigurebelow). •Reinstallthebeltcover. IMPORTANT:Toensuresafetyandperfor- mancelevels,onlyodginalequipmentshear boltsshouldbeused.Whenreplacingshear pacers. Toreplaceabrokenshearbolt,proceedas follows: •MovethethrottletoO(Stop)andtum oftallcontrols. •Disconnectthesparkplugwire.Besure allmovingpartshavestopped. •Removethebrokenshearbolt. •Aligntheholeintheaugerwiththeholein theaugershaft.Installthenewshearpin andspacerfoundintoolboxlocatedon topofbeltcover. •Reconnectthesparkplugwire. SNOWTHROWERSTORAGE •Thoroughlycleanthesnowthrower. •Lubricatealllubricationpoints(seethe Maintenancesectiononpages12-14). •Besurethatallnuts,boltsandscrewsare securelyfastened,inspecta(Ivisiblemov- ingpartsfordamage,breakageandwear. Replaceifnecessary. •Touchupallrustedorchippedpaintsur- faces;sandlightlybeforepainting. •Coverthebaremetalpartsoftheblower housingaugerandtheimpellerwithrust preventative,suchasaspraylubricant. NOTE:Ayearlycheckuportune-upbya CraftsmanServiceCenterisagoodwayto insurethatyoursnowthrowerwillprovide maximumperformanceforthenextseason. ENGINESTORAGE Gasolinemustberemovedortreatedto preventgumdepositsfromformingin thetank,filter,hose,andcarburetordur- ingstorage.Alsoduringstorage,alcohol blendedgasolinethatusesethanolor methanol(Sometimescalledgasohol)at- tractswater.Itactsonthegasolineto formacidswhichdamagetheengine. •Toremovegasoline,runtheengineuntil thetankisemptyandtheenginestops. Thendrainremaininggasolinefromcar- buretorbypressingupwardonbowldrain locatedonthebottomofcarburetor(see figureonright). •Ifyoudonotwanttoremovegasoline, usefuelstabilizersuppliedwithunitor purchaseCraftsmanFuelStabilizerNo. 33500.Addfuelstabilizertoanygasoline leftinthetanktominimizegumdeposits andacids.Ifthetankisalmostempty,mix stabilizerwithfreshgasolineinaseparate containerandaddsometothetank. Alwaysfollowinstructionsonstabilizercon- tainer.Thenrunengineatleast10minutes afterstabilizerisaddedtoallowmixtureto reachcarburetor.Storesnowthrowerina safeplace.SeeWarningabove, Youcankeepyourengineingoodoperating conditionduringstorageby: •Changingoil(seepage10). •Lubricatingthepiston/cylinderarea.This canbedonebyfirstremovingthespark plugandsquirtingafewdropsofclean engineoilintothesparkplughole.Then coverthesparkplugholewitharagtoab- sorboilspray.Next,rotatetheengineby pullingthestarterropefullyouttwoor threetimes.Finally,reinstallsparkplug andattachsparkplugwire. OTHER •Ifpossible,storeyoursnowthrowerin- doorsandcoverittogiveprotectionfrom dustanddirt. •Ifthemachinemustbestoredoutdoors, blockupthesnowthrowertobesurethe entiremachineisofftheground. •Coverthesnowthrowerwithasuitable protectivecoverthatdoesnotretainmois- ture.Donotuseplasticorvinyl.
