    Movie Recording Precautions
    • This camera also records audio. Note the following points
    when recording a movie.
    — Take care that you do not
    block the microphone
    with your fingers.
    — Good recording results
    are not possible when the
camera is too far from the
    subject.
    — Operating camera
    buttons during recording
    can cause button noise to
    be included in the audio.
    — Movie audio is recorded
    in monaural.
    • Very bright light inside of an image can cause a vertical
band to appear in the monitor screen image. This is a
CCD phenomenon known as “vertical smear”, and does
not indicate malfunction of the camera. Note that vertical
smear is not recorded with the image in the case of a
snapshot, but it is recorded in the case of a movie.

    							OTHER RECORDING FUNCTIONS
    104
    • The movie recording capacity of built-in memory is very
small. Use of a memory card (page 169) is recommended
    when recording movies.
    • Certain types of memory cards take longer to record data,
which can cause movie frames to be dropped.
andREC flash on the monitor screen during recording to let
you know when a frame has been dropped. Use of an SD
memory card with a maximum transfer speed of at least
    10MB per second is recommended.
    • Optical zoom is disabled during movie recording. Digital
zoom only is available. Make sure you select the optical
zoom setting you want to use before you press [
    ]
(MOVIE) to start movie recording (page 56).
    • You can use Anti Shake to reduce the effects of hand
movement during movie recording. See “Reducing the
Effects of Hand or Subject Movement” (page 90) for
    details.
    • Turning on Anti Shake makes the movie image appear as
if have been zoomed by about 10%.
    • The effects of camera movement in an image become
more pronounced when you record close ups or recording
with a large zoom factor. Because of this, use of a tripod
is recommended when recording close ups or recording
    with a large zoom factor.
    • Images may be out of focus if the subject is outside the
shooting range of the camera.• Focus is fixed in the Auto Focus mode and Macro mode.
    • Movie recording is not possible while any one of the
following BEST SHOT scenes is being used (page 85).

    your fingers.
    • Good recording results are not possible when the camera
is too far from the subject.

    information.

    Using the Histogram
You can use [] (DISP) to display a histogram on the
monitor screen (page 30). The histogram lets you check
exposure conditions as you record images. You can also
display the histogram of a recorded image in the PLAY
    mode.
    Histogram
    • A histogram is a graph that represents the lightness of an
image in terms of the number of pixels. The vertical axis
indicates the number of pixels, while the horizontal axis
indicates lightness. You can use the histogram to
determine whether an image includes the shadowing (left
side), mid tones (center), and highlighting (right) required
to bring out sufficient image detail. If the histogram
appears too lopsided for some reason, you can use EV
shift (exposure compensation) to move it left or right in
order to achieve better balance. Optimum exposure can
be achieved by correcting exposure so the graph is as
close to the center as possible.

    							OTHER RECORDING FUNCTIONS
    110
    • An RGB histogram that shows the distribution of R (red),
G (green), and B (blue) components is also displayed.
This histogram can be used to determine whether there is
too much or too little of each of the color components in
    an image.
     NOTE
    • You can use key customization (page 112) to
configure the camera to perform exposure
compensation whenever you press [] or [] while in
the REC mode. If you do this, you can adjust
exposure compensation while viewing the on-screen
histogram (page 79).• When the histogram is too far
to the left, it means that there
    are too many dark pixels.
    This type of histogram results
    when the overall image is
dark. A histogram that is too
far to the left may result in
“black out” of the dark areas
    of an image.
    • When the histogram is too far
to the right, it means that
    there are too many light
    pixels.
    This type of histogram results
    when the overall image is
light. A histogram that is too
far to the right may result in
“white out” of the light areas of
    an image.
