Preparations Š 31 First Time Settings Basic Setup The first time you turn on the camcorder, you will be guided by the camcorder’s easy-to-follow setup screens to configure the cam- corder’s initial settings. You will set the date and time, movie format, and other basic functions. For details on how to use the touch screen, refer to Using the Touch Screen (A 35). 1 Touch the language used for onscreen displays and then touch [ æ]. • You may need to scroll down to find your language. • After you select a language, the [Date Format] screen will appear. 2 Touch [Y.M.D], [M.D,Y] or [D.M.Y] to select the date format you prefer and then touch [ æ]. After you select the date format, the [Date/Time] screen will appear with the first field selected. 3 Touch a field you want to change (year, month, day, hours or minutes). 4Touch [ Í] or [ Î] to change the field as necessary. 5 Set the correct date and time by changing all the fields in the same way • Touch [24H] to use 24-hour clock or leave it unselected to use 12-hour clock (AM/PM). 6 Touch [OK] and then touch [ æ]. • After you select the date and time, the [Movie Format] screen will appear. 7Touch [ ·] or [ ¸] to select the movie format and then touch [ æ ]. • 6 /4 After you select the movie format, the [ v Rec Media for Movies] screen will appear, where you can select the memory to which you want to record movies. 32 Š Preparations •7 Skip to step 10. 8Touch [ &] (built-in memory) or [ ] (memory card) and then touch [ æ]. • When selecting the memory, you can check the available recording time based on the video quality setting. • After you select the memory to which you want to record movies, the [{ Rec Media for Photos] screen will appear. 9Touch [ &] (built-in memory) or [ ] (memory card) and then touch [ æ]. When selecting the memory, you can check the number of photos that can be recorded, based on a photo size of 1920x1080. 10 Touch [OK]. Setup is complete. The settings you selected will appear briefly and then the camcorder will be ready to record. NOTES • Some control buttons, such as [ZOOM] or [PHOTO], will appear in English regardless of the language selected. • You can change the language later on with the > q > [Lan- guage ] setting. You can adjust the date and time later on with the > q > [Date/Time] setting. You can change the movie format later on with the > [Movie Format] setting. 6/4 Yo u c a n select the memory for movies and photos later on with the > [Recording Media] > [v Rec Media for Movies] and [ { Rec Media for Photos] settings. • When you do not use the camcorder for about 3 months, the built-in rechargeable lithium battery may discharge completely and the date and time setting may be lost. In such case, recharge the built-in lithium battery ( A178). The next time you turn on the camcorder, you will have to configure the initial settings again. COPY
Preparations Š 33 Changing the Time Zone Change the time zone to match your location. The default setting is New York. In addition, the camcorder is able to retain the date and time of another location. This is convenient when you travel so that you can set the camcorder to match the time of your home location or that of your destination. Operating modes: 1 Open the [Time Zone/DST] screen. 2Touch [] to set the home time zone, or [ #] to set the time zone of your destination when you are traveling. 3Touch [ Í] or [ Î] to set the desired time zone. If necessary, touch [ $ ] to adjust for daylight saving time. 4Touch [ X] to close the menu. Initializing the Memory Initialize memory cards when you use them with this camcorder for the first time. You can also initialize a memory card or the built-in memory (6 /4 only) to permanently delete all the recordings it contains. 6 /4 At the time of purchase, the built-in memory comes pre- initialized and contains music files for use as background music and images for use with the image mix function (image mix frames). Operating modes: 1 Power the camcorder using the compact power adapter. Do not disconnect the power source or turn off the camcorder until the initialization is completed. 2 Initialize the memory. 34 Š Preparations 6/4 7 1Touch this option if you want to physically erase all the data rather than just clear the file allocation table of the memory. 2If you selected the [Complete Initialization] option, you can touch [Cancel] to cancel the initialization while it is in progress. All recordings will be erased and the memory can be used without any problem. IMPORTANT • Initializing the memory will permanently erase all recordings. Lost origi- nal recordings cannot be recovered. Make sure you save important recordings in advance using an external device ( A107). • Initializing a memory card will permanently erase any music files and images you may have transferred to the card. ( 6/4 The music files and image mix frames that come pre-installed in the built-in mem- ory will be restored after it is initialized.) To transfer music files from the supplied VIXIA CD-ROM to the memory card: - Windows users: Use the supplied software for AVCHD movies, Transfer Utility LE . For details, refer to the Software Guide (PDF file) of PIXELA’s software. - Mac OS users: Use Finder to transfer music files from the “MUSIC” folder on the supplied VIXIA CD-ROM to the memory card. Preparations Š 35 Basic Operation of the Camcorder Using the Touch Screen The control buttons and menu items that appear on the touch screen change dynamically depending on the operating mode and the task you are performing. With the intuitive touch screen interface you have all the controls at your fingertips. To u c h Touch on an element displayed on the touch screen. Used to start playing back a scene in an index screen, to select a setting from the menus, etc. Drag While touching the screen, swipe your fin- ger up and down or left and right across the screen. Used to scroll menus, to browse through index screen pages or to adjust slider controls like the volume. IMPORTANT • In the following cases, you may not be able to perform touch operations correctly. - Using your fingernails or hard-tipped objects, such as ballpoint pens. - Operating the touch screen with wet or gloved hands. - Applying excessive force with your finger. Using the Menus Many of the camcorder’s functions can be adjusted from the menus in the (Home) menu. In addition, you will find it useful to learn how to navigate the other menus as well so that you can access all that your camcorder has to offer. COPY
36 Š Preparations (Home) Menu The (Home) menu is the gateway to most of the camcorder’s func- tions and settings. Operating modes: 1 Touch [ ] on the upper left of the screen to open the (Home) menu. 2 Drag your finger left/right to bring the desired menu to the center. 3 Touch the icon of the desired menu to open it. See below for a description of each menu. The menus that appear depend on whether the camcorder is in recording mode or playback mode. Menus Available in Recording Mode SCN In recording mode In playback mode MenuDescription [ Other Settings] Opens the [ Other Settings] menus, which gives you access to various camcorder settings. For details on how to navigate this menu, refer to Using the [ Other Settings] Menus ( A 37). [ Recording Setup] Open this menu to select the movie format ( A60), video quality ( A60), the memory used for recordings* ( A63) and whether to use dual recording or relay recording ( A63). [Shooting Mode] From this menu, you will be able to select the shooting mode. Each of the 5 modes offers you different functionality and control over the camcorder. For more details, refer to Recording ( A 39). COPY

NOTES • For brevity’s sake, references to settings in the (Home) menu will include only the icon of the menu, the tab of the desired submenu (for settings in the [ Other Settings] menu) and the setting name. For example, to adjust the screen’s brightness, use the > > [LCD Brightness] setting. Using the [ Other Settings] Menus Refer to [ Other Settings] Menus (A 146) for available functions. [ Main Functions] This contains functions commonly used while shooting, such as focus and exposure. For details on how to navigate this menu, refer to [ Main Functions] Panel ( A 38). [ Remote Control+ Streaming]* After installing the remote control app, use your smartphone as a remote control to record movies with the camcorder ( A125). MenuDescription MenuDescription [ Other Settings] Open the [ Other Settings] menus ( A37). The available functions differ in recording mode and playback mode. [ Photo Playback] Switches the camcorder to photo playback mode ( A54). [ y Movie Playback] Switches the camcorder to movie playback mode ( A50). [ Baby Album] You can play back the movies you recorded with Baby mode ( A 93). [ ¦ Video Snapshot] You can play back video snapshot scenes ( A94). [ Wi-Fi]* Allows you to access the various Wi-Fi functions, such as uploading recordings to the Web or playing back recordings using a smartphone. 38 Š Preparations Operating modes: * In mode, access to functions is limited. 1 Touch [ ] on the upper left of the screen to open the (Home) menu. 2 Drag your finger left/right to bring [ Other Settings] to the center. 3 Touch the icon to open the [ Other Settings] menus. 4 Touch the tab of the desired menu. 5 Drag your finger up/down to bring the setting you want to change into the orange selection bar. • You can also use the [ Í] and [Î ] icons for scrolling. • Menu items not available appear grayed out. • You can touch any menu item on the screen to bring it directly into the selection bar. 6 When the desired menu item is inside the selection bar, touch [ æ]. 7 Touch the desired option and touch [ X]. You can touch [ X] to close the menu at any time. [ Main Functions] Panel The [ Main Functions] panel contains frequently used shooting func- tions. Refer to [ Main Functions] Panel (A 144) for available func- tions. Operating modes: * In mode, access to functions is limited. Preparations Š 39 You may need to drag your finger up and down along the scroll bar or touch [Í] and [Î ] to find the control button of the desired function. Operating Modes Recording When recording, the camcorder’s operating mode is determined by the [Shooting Mode] menu in the (Home) menu and the [Movie Format] option in the [ Recording Setup] menu. Perform the following proce- dure to set the shooting mode. Refer to Selecting the Movie Format (AVCHD/MP4) (A 60) for a detailed explanation on how to set the movie format. 1 Touch the shooting mode button on the left side of the screen. 2 Drag your finger up/down to bring the desired shooting mode to the center and then touch [OK]. For and modes, you will need to make additional selections and then touch [OK]. 40 Š Preparations Playback Press the button to switch the camcorder between camera (recording) mode and playback mode. You can press when the camcorder is off to turn it on directly in playback mode. NOTES • 6 /4 When switching to a playback mode, the memory selected for playback will be the same currently used for recording. (AUTO mode) Let the camcorder take care of most of the settings while you concentrate on recording ( A41). Great for beginners or if you just prefer not to bother with detailed camcorder settings. (Cinema mode) Give your recordings a cinematic look and use cinema-look filters to create unique movies ( A65). (Special scene modes) From nightscapes to beaches, have the camcorder select the best settings that match the situation you are in ( A66). (Programmed AE mode) Enjoy full access to menus, settings and advanced functions ( A68). Playback modeOperation Playing back movies (A 50).
