Playback Mode zzPress the button to turn the camera on and view your shots. zzTo turn the camera off, press the button again. • To switch to Playback mode from Shooting mode, press the < 1> button. • To switch to Shooting mode from Playback mode, press the shutter button halfway (= 22). • The lens will be retracted after about one minute once the camera is in \ Playback mode. You can turn the camera off when the lens is retracted by pressing the < 1> button. Power-Saving Features (Auto Power Down) As a way to conserve battery power, the camera automatically deactivates the screen (Display Off) and then turns itself off after a specific period of inactivity. Power Saving in Shooting ModeThe screen is automatically deactivated after about one minute of inacti\ vity. In about two more minutes, the lens is retracted and the camera turns it\ self off. To activate the screen and prepare for shooting when the screen is off but the lens is still out, press the shutter button halfway ( = 22). Power Saving in Playback ModeThe camera turns itself off automatically after about five minutes of inactivity. • You can deactivate Auto Power Down and adjust the timing of Display Off, if you prefer (= 152). • Power saving is not active while the camera is connected to other device\ s via Wi-Fi (= 124), or when connected to a computer ( = 174).

In this manual, shutter button operations are described as pressing the \ button halfway or all the way down . 1 Press halfway. (Press lightly to focus.) zzPress the shutter button halfway. The camera beeps twice, and AF frames are displayed around image areas in focus. 2 Press all the way down. (From the halfway position, press fully to shoot.) zzThe camera shoots, as a shutter sound is played. zzKeep the camera still until the shutter sound ends. • Images may be out of focus if you shoot without initially pressing the shutter button halfway. • Length of shutter sound playback varies depending on the time required for the shot. It may take longer in some shooting scenes, and images will be blurry if you move the camera (or the subject moves) before the shutter sound ends. Optical Viewfinder To conserve battery power when shooting, you can use the optical viewfinder instead of the screen. Shoot the same way as when using the screen. 1 Deactivate the screen. zzPress the button several times to turn the screen off (= 23). 2 Adjust the diopter. zzAs you look through the optical viewfinder, turn the dial one way or the other so that images look sharp. • The area visible in the optical viewfinder may differ slightly from the image area in your shots. • At aspect ratios other than 4:3, the area visible in the optical viewfinder differs from the image area in your shots. Check the settings before shooting. • The lens may be partially visible through the optical viewfinder at some zoom positions. • Although the camera automatically focuses on subjects, face detection an\ d focusing is not possible. • Continuous shooting is not supported in [ ] mode, because the camera will not determine the shooting scene.

P, Tv, Av, M, C1, and C2 Modes Take a variety of shots using your preferred settings (= 67, 91). Movie Mode For shooting movies (= 65). You can also shoot movies when the mode dial is not set to Movie mode, simply by pressing the movie button. Auto Mode / Hybrid Auto Mode Fully automatic shooting, with camera-determined settings (= 16, 29, 31). Special Scene Mode Shoot with optimal settings for specific scenes ( = 52). Creative Filters Mode Add a variety of effects to images when shooting ( = 54). Shooting Display Options Press the button to view other information on the screen, or to hide the information. For details on the information displayed, see “On-Sc\ reen Information” (= 191). Display 1 Display 2Display Off • Even if the screen is off, it will turn on when you start shooting a movie. • Screen brightness is automatically increased by the night display functi\ on when you are shooting under low light, making it easier to check how sho\ ts are composed. However, on-screen image brightness may not match the brightness of your shots. Note that any on-screen image distortion or je\ rky subject motion will not affect recorded images. • For playback display options, see “Switching Display Modes” ( = 103).

Menu Configure commonly used shooting functions through the FUNC. menu as follows. Menu items are grouped by purpose on tabs, such as shooting [ 4], playback [1], and so on. Note that the length and type of information you can enter varies depending on the function you are using\ . Entering Characters zzPress the buttons or turn the dial to choose a character, and then press the button to enter it. zzThe amount of information you can enter varies depending on the function you are using. Indicator Color Indicator Status Camera Status Power Lamp Green On Camera on Indicator GreenOn Ready to shoot (when the flash is deactivated) Blinking Recording/reading/transmitting images, shooting long exposures ( = 92, 93), distance warning ( = 185), cannot focus (when the flash is deactivated) ( = 185), or connecting/ transmitting via Wi-Fi Orange On Ready to shoot (when the flash is activated) Blinking Distance warning ( = 185), or cannot focus (when the flash is activated) ( = 185) • When the indicator blinks green, never turn the camera off, open the memory card/battery cover, or shake or jolt the camera, which may corrupt images or damage the camera or memory card. Clock You can check the current time. zzPress and hold the < m> button. zzThe current time appears. zzIf you hold the camera vertically while using the clock function, it will switch to vertical display. Press the buttons or turn the dial to change the display color. zzPress the button again to cancel the clock display. • When the camera is off, press and hold the button, then press the power button to display the clock.

(A zoom bar showing the zoom position is displayed.) 4 Shoot. Shooting Still Images Focus. zzPress the shutter button halfway. The camera beeps twice after focusing, and AF frames are displayed to indicate image areas in focus. zzSeveral AF frames are displayed when multiple areas are in focus. zzIf [Raise the flash] appears on the screen, move the switch to raise the flash. It will fire when shooting. If you prefer not to use the flash, push it down with your finger, into the camera. Zoom Bar Focus Range (approx.) Shooting with Camera-Determined Settings For fully automatic selection of the optimal settings for specific scenes, simply let the camera determine the subject and shooting conditions. Still ImagesMovies Shooting (Smart Auto) 1 Turn the camera on. zzPress the power button. zzThe startup screen is displayed. 2 Enter [] mode. zzSet the mode dial to []. zzAim the camera at the subject. The camera will make a slight clicking noise as it determines the scene. zzIcons representing the scene and image stabilization mode are displayed in the upper left of the screen (= 33, 34). zzFrames displayed around any detected subjects indicate that they are in focus.

Shooting Movies Start shooting. zzPress the movie button. The camera beeps once as recording begins, and [ Rec] is displayed with the elapsed time. zzBlack bars are displayed on the top and bottom edges of the screen, and the subject is slightly enlarged. These areas will not be recorded. zzFrames displayed around any detected faces indicate that they are in focus. zzOnce recording begins, take your finger off the movie button. Elapsed Time Resize the subject and recompose the shot as needed. zzTo resize the subject, repeat the operations in step 3 ( = 29). However, note that the sound of camera operations will be recorded. zzWhen you recompose shots, the focus, brightness, and colors will be automatically adjusted. Finish shooting. zzPress the movie button again to stop shooting. The camera beeps twice as recording stops. zzRecording will stop automatically when the memory card becomes full. • The flash firing during shots indicates that the camera has automatically attempted to ensure optimal colors in the main subject and background (\ Multi- area White Balance).
