Operation 31 EnglishIf you forget the password If the password function is activated, you will be asked to enter the five-digit password every time you turn on the projector. If you enter the wrong password, the password error message as pictured to the right displays lasting for three seconds, and the message INPUT PASSWORD follows. You can retry by entering another five-digit password, or if you did not record the password in this manual, and you absolutely do not remember it, you can use the password recall procedure. See Entering the password recall procedure on page 31 for details. If you enter an incorrect password 5 times in succession, the projector will automatically shut down in a short time. Entering the password recall procedure 1. Press and hold AUTO on the projector or remote control for 3 seconds. The projector will display a coded number on the screen. 2. Write down the number and turn off your projector. 3. Seek help from the local BenQ service center to decode the number. You may be required to provide proof of purcha se documentation to verify that you are an authorized user of the projector. Changing the password 1. Open the OSD menu and go to the SYSTEM SETUP: Advanced > Security Settings > Change password menu. 2. Press MODE/ENTER. The message INPUT CURRENT PASSWORD displays. 3. Enter the old password. • If the password is correct, another message INPUT NEW PASSWORD displays. • If the password is incorrect, the password error message displays lasting for three seconds, and the message INPUT CURRENT PASSWORD displays for your retry. You can press MENU/EXIT to cancel the change or try another password. 4. Enter a new password. The digits being input will display as asterisks on-screen. Write your selected password down here in this manual in advance or right after th e password is entered so that it is available to you should you ever forget it. Password: __ __ __ __ __ Keep this manual in a safe place. 5. Confirm the new password by re-entering the new password. 6. You have successfully assigned a new password to the projector. Remember to enter the new password next time the projector is started. 7. To leave the OSD menu, press MENU/EXIT. Password Error Please try again. Operation 32 EnglishDisabling the password function To disable password protection, go back to the SYSTEM SETUP: Advanced > Security Settings > Change Security Settings menu after opening the OSD menu system. Press MODE/ENTER . The message INPUT PASSWORD displays. Enter the current password. i. If the password is correct, the OSD menu returns to the Security Settings page. Press to highlight Power on Lock and press / to select Off. You will not have to enter the password next time you turn on the projector. Press to highlight Splash Screen Lock and press / to select Off. The Splash Screen function in the SYSTEM SETUP: Basic will become available. ii. If the password is incorrect, the password error message displays lasting for three seconds, and the message INPUT PASSWORD displays for your retry. You can press MENU/EXIT to cancel the change or try another password. Though the password function is disabled, you need to keep the old password in hand should you ever need to re-activate the password function by entering the old password.
Operation 33 EnglishSwitching input signal The projector can be connected to multiple devices at the same time. However, it can only display one full screen at a time. Be sure the Quick Auto Search function in the SOURCE menu is On (which is the default of this projector) if you wa nt the projector to automati cally search for the signals. You can also manually cycle through the available input signals. 1. Press SOURCE on the projector or remote control. A source selection bar displays. 2. Press / until your desired signal is selected and press MODE/ENTER. Once detected, the selected source information will display on the screen for seconds. If there is multiple equipment connected to the projector, repeat steps 1-2 to search for another signal. • The brightness level of the projected image will change accordingly when you switch between different input signals. Data (graphic) PC presentations using mostly static images are generally brighter than Video using mostly moving images (movies). • The input signal type effects the options available for the Picture Mode. See Selecting a picture mode on page 39 for details. • The native display resolution of this projector is in a 4:3 aspect ratio (MP735 is 16:10). For best display picture results, you should select and use an input signal which outputs at this resolution. Any other resolutions will be scaled by the projector depending upon the aspect ratio setting, which may cause some image distortion or loss of picture clarity. See Selecting the aspect ratio on page 37 for details. Changing Color Space In the unlikely event that you connect the projector to a DVD player via the projector’s DVI-D input and the projected pi cture displays wrong colors, please change the color space to YUV or RGB . To do this: 1. Press MENU/EXIT and then press / until the SOURCE menu is highlighted. 2. Press to highlight Color Space Conversion and press / to select YUV or RGB . This function is only availa ble when the DVI-D or HDMI input socket is in use. D-sub / Comp. HDMI VIDEO DVI-D DVI-A S-VIDEO
Operation 34 EnglishAdjusting the projected image Adjusting the projection angle The projector is equipped with 1 quick-release adjuster foot and 1 rear adjuster foot. These adjusters change the image height and pr ojection angle. To adjust the projector: 1. Press the quick-release button and lift the front of the projector. Once the image is positioned where you want it, release the quick-release button to lock the foot in position. 2. Screw the rear adjuster foot to fine tune the horizontal angle. To retract the foot, hold up the projector while pressing the quick-release button, then slowly lower the projector. Screw the rear adjuster foot in a reverse direction. If the projector is not placed on a flat surf ace or the screen and the projector are not perpendicular to each other, the projected image becomes trapezoidal. To correct this situation, see Correcting keystone on page 35 for details. • Do not look into the lens while the lamp is on. The strong light from the lamp may cause damage to your eyes. • Be careful when you press the adjuster button as it is close to the exhaust vent where hot air comes from. Auto-adjusting the image In some cases, you may need to optimize the picture quality. To do this, press AUTO on the projector or remote control. Within 3 seconds, the built-in Intelligent Auto Adjustment function will re-adjust the values of Frequency and Clock to provide the best picture quality. The current source information will be displayed in the upper left corner of the screen for 3 seconds. • The screen will be blank while AUTO is functioning. • This function is only available when PC signal (analog RGB) is selected. 1 2
Operation 35 EnglishFine-tuning the image size and clarity 1. Adjust the projected image to the size that you need using the ZOOM ring. 2. Then sharpen the image by rotating the FOCUS ring. Correcting keystone Keystoning refers to the situation where the projected image is noticeably wider at either the top or bottom. It occurs wh en the projector is not perpendicular to the screen. To correct this, besides adjust ing the height of the projector, you will need to manually correct it following one of these steps. • Using the remote control Press / on the projector or remote control to display the Ke ystone correction page. Press to correct keyst oning at the top of the image. Press to correct keystoning at the bottom of the image. • Using the OSD menu 1. Press MENU/EXIT and then press / until the DISPLAY menu is highlighted. 2. Press to highlight Keystone and press MODE/ENTER . The Keystone correction page displays. 3. Press to correct keystoning at the top of the image or press to correct keystoning at the bottom of the image. ZOOMFOCUS ZOOMFOCUS Press/.Press /. 6 KEYSTONE Exit MENU
Operation 36 EnglishMagnifying and searching for details If you need to find the details on the proj ected picture, magnify the picture. Use the direction arrow keys fo r navigating the picture. • Using the remote control 1. Press Zoom +/- to display the Zoom bar. 2. Press Zoom + to magnify the center of the picture. Press the key repeatedly until the picture size is suitable for your need. 3. Use the directional arrows ( , , , ) on the projector or remote control to navigate the picture. 4. To restore the picture to its original size, press AUTO. You can also press Zoom -. When the key is pressed again, the picture is further reduced until it is re stored to the original size. • Using the OSD menu 1. Press MENU/EXIT and then press / until the DISPLAY menu is highlighted. 2. Press to highlight Digital Zoom and press MODE/ENTER . The Zoom bar displays. 3. Repeat steps 2-4 in the section of Using the remote control above. Or if you are using the projector control panel, continue to the following steps. 4. Press on the projector repeatedly to magnify the picture to a desired size. 5. To navigate the picture, press MODE/ENTER to switch to the paning mode and press the directional arrows ( , , , ) to navigate the picture. 6. To reduce size of the picture, press MODE/ENTER to switch back to the zoom in/out functionality, and press AUTO to restore the picture to it s original size. You can also press repeatedly until it is restored to the original size. The picture can only be navigated after the picture is magnified. You can further magnify the picture while searching for details.
Operation 37 EnglishSelecting the aspect ratio The aspect ratio is the ratio of the image width to the image height. For MP724 and MP727, the default aspect ratio is 4:3. And for MP735, the default aspect ration is 16:10. Most analog TV and computers ar e in 4:3 ratio, and digital TV and DVDs are usually in 16:9 ratio. With the advent of digital signal processing, digital display devices like this projector can dynamically stretch and scale the image output to a different aspect than that of the image input signal. To change the projected image ratio (n o matter what aspect the source is): 1. Press MENU/EXIT and then press / until the DISPLAY menu is highlighted. 2. Press to highlight Aspect Ratio . 3. Press / to select an aspect ratio to suit the format of the video signal and your display requirements. About the aspect ratio In the pictures below, the black portions are inactive areas and the white portions are active areas. OSD menus can be displayed on those unused black areas. 1. Auto: MP724 and MP727: Scales an image proportionally to fit the projectors native resolution in its horizontal width. This is suitable for the incoming image which is neither in 4:3 nor 16:9 and you want to make most use of the screen without altering the images aspect ratio. MP735: Scales an image proportionally to fit the projectors nati ve resolution in its horizontal width and ve rtical height. This is suitable for the incoming image which is in 4:3, 16:9 or 16:10 and you want to make most use of the screen without altering the images aspect ratio. 16:10 picture 15:9 picture 4:3 picture 16:9 picture 16:10 picture
Operation 38 English2. Real: The image is projected as its original resolution, and resized to fit within the display area. For inpu t signals with lower resolutions, the projected image will display smaller than if resized to full screen. You could adjust the zoom setting or move the projector away from the screen to increase the image size if necessary. You may also need to refocus the projector after making these adjustments. OSD menus can be displayed in the unused black areas. MP724 and MP727: MP735: 3. 4:3: Scales an image so that it is displayed in the center of the screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is most suitable for 4:3 images like computer monitors, standard definition TV and 4:3 images aspect DVD movies, as it displays them without aspect alteration.MP724 and MP727: MP735: 4.16:9: Scales an image so that it is displayed in the center of the screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Operation 39 EnglishOptimizing the image Selecting a picture mode The projector is preset with several predefined picture modes so that you can choose one to suit your operating environment and input signal picture type. To select an operation mode that suits your need, you can follow one of the following steps. • Press MODE/ENTER on the projector repeatedly until your desired mode is selected. •Go to the PICTURE > Picture Mode menu and press / to select a desired mode. Picture modes for differ ent types of signals The picture modes available for differen t types of signals are listed below. PC input signals: DVI, D-SUB / COMP. IN (analog RGB) 1.Dynamic mode (Default) : Maximizes the brightness of the projected image. This mode is suitable for environments where extra-high brightness is required, such as using the projector in well lit rooms. 2. Presentation mode : Is designed for presentations. The brightness is emphasized in this mode to match PC and notebook coloring. 3. sRGB mode : Maximizes the purity of RGB colors to provide true-to-life images regardless of brightness setting. It is most suitable for viewing photos taken with an sRGB compatible and properly calibrated camera, and for viewing PC graphic and drawing applications such as AutoCAD. 4. Cinema mode : Is appropriate for playing colorful movies, video clips from digital cameras or DVs through the PC input for best viewing in a blackened (little light) environment. 5. User 1/User 2 mode : Recalls the settings customized based on the current available picture modes. See Setting the User 1/User 2 mode on page 40 for details. Video input signals: Component (YPbPr), S-Video, Video, D-Sub/Comp. IN (YPbPr), DVI-D (HDC P/HDMI), HDMI, HDCP 1.Dynamic mode : Is suitable for playing gamebox-based video games in a normal living room lighting level environment. 2. Standard mode (Default): Is appropriate for viewing co lorful movies, video clips from digital cameras or DVs. 3. Cinema mode : Is suitable for enjoying dark movies or DVD movies best viewed in a blackened (little light) home cine ma or lounge room environment. 4. User 1/User 2 mode : Recalls the settings customized based on the current available picture modes. See Setting the User 1/User 2 mode on page 40 for details.
Operation 40 EnglishSetting the User 1/User 2 mode There are two user-definable modes if the curre nt available picture modes are not suitable for your need. You can use one of the picture modes (except the User 1/User 2 ) as a starting point and customize the settings. 1. Press MENU/EXIT to open the On-Screen Display (OSD) menu. 2. Go to the PICTURE > Picture Mode menu. 3. Press / to select User 1 to User 2 . 4. Press to highlight Reference Mode . This function is only available when User 1 or User 2 mode is selected up in the Picture Mode sub-menu item. 5. Press / to select a picture mode that is closest to your need. 6. Press to select a sub-menu item to be changed and adjust the value with / . See Fine-tuning the image quality in user modes below for details. 7. When all settings have been done, highlight Save Settings and press MODE/ENTER to store the settings. 8. The confirmation message Setting Saved displays. Using Wall Color In the situation where you are projecting onto a colored surface such as a painted wall which may not be white, the Wall Color feature can help correct the projected picture’s color to prevent possible color difference between the source and projected pictures. To use this function, go to the DISPLAY > Wall Color menu and press / to select a color which is the closest to the color of the projection surface. There are several precalibrated colors to choose from: Light Yellow, Pink , Light Green , Blue , and Blackboard. Fine-tuning the image qu ality in user modes According to the detected signal type, there are some user-definable functions available when User 1 or User 2 mode is selected. You can make adjustments to these functions based on your needs. Adjusting Brightness Highlight Brightness in the PICTURE menu and adjust the values by pressing / on the projector or remote control. The higher the value, the brighter the image. And lower the setting, darker the image. Adjust this control so the black areas of the image appear just as black and that detail in the dark areas is visible. Adjusting Contrast Highlight Contrast in the PICTURE menu and adjust the values by pressing / on the projector or remote control. The higher the value, the great er the contrast. Use this to set the peak white level after you have previously adjusted the Brightness setting to suit your selected input and viewing environment. +50+30 +70 0+30-30
