IMPOR TANT SAFEGUARDS People with electronic devices, such as pacemakers, should consult their physician(s) before using this product. Operation of electrical equipment in close proximity to a heart pacemaker could cause interference or failure of the pacemaker . Some dust created by grinding, drilling, sawing, sanding, and other construction activities contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer , birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are: • Lead from lead-based paints. • Crystalline silica from bricks and cement and other masonr y products, and arsenic and chromium from chemically-treated lumber . Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles. Handling the power cord on this product may expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling. SA VE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. 4 DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injur y. WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injur y. CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injur y. CAUTION used without the safety alert symbol indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in property damage. NOTEprovides additional information that is useful for proper use and maintenance of this tool. If a NOTE is indicated make sure it is fully understood. 3
WORK AREA Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered work benches and dark work areas may cause accidents or injur y. Do not operate power tools in explosive areas, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep bystanders, children and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. ELECTRICAL SAFETY Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other .) This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way . If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do not change the plug in any way .Double insulation eliminates the need for the three wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators . There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.Don’t expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carr y the tool or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep the cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately . Damaged cords increase the risk of electric shock. When operating the tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked “W - A” or “W .”These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of elec- tric shock. 5 PERSONAL SAFETY Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operat- ing a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injur y. Dress properly . Do not wear loose clothing or jewelr y. Contain long hair . Keep your hair , clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelr y or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in tools that have the switch on invites accidents. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the power tool “ON”. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injur y. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper foot- ing and balance enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situa- tions.Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions. USE AND CARE TOOL USE AND CARE Use clamps or other practical ways to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control. Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed. Do not use the tool if the power switch does not turn it “ON” or “OFF”.Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. Disconnect the power cord plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories or storing the tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally . Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. 6
Always hold the tool by its insulated gripping sur faces when cutting in areas that may contain hidden live wiring. If the bit makes contact with a live wire, the metal parts of this tool may conduct enough electricity to seriously shock the user . Contact with a “live” wire will make exposed metal parts of the tool “live” and shock the opera- tor.Do not cut or break into existing walls or other blind areas where electrical wiring may exist. If this situa tion is una voidable, disconnect all fuses or circuit breakers feeding this worksite . Check to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from the Rotar y Tool before switching the tool “ON”. Keys or wrenches can fly away at high velocity strik- ing you or a bystander . Make sure all nuts and screws are securely tightened after changing bits. Keep hands away from moving parts. Do not use the Rotar y Tool if it has been damaged, left outdoors in the rain, snow , wet or damp environments, or immersed in liquid. Check the speed rating on all accessories. Accessories must never be run at a high- er speed than they were designed to handle. When using wire or bristle brushes, always wear protective gloves and a face shield. These brushes should never be run at speeds greater than 15,000 RPM. Always run brushes at operating speed for a minute before using to eject loose wires and bristles. Be sure that the discharge is pointed away from you. Make sure no one is standing in front or in line with the brush. Do not apply heavy pressure to wire or bristle brushes. This will only cause damage and/or personal injur y. Brushes work best when applied lightly . Do not use a wheel that may be damaged. If the tool or wheel is dropped, install a new wheel before continuing. Avoid bouncing and snagging the wheel as this may lead to cracking or chipping. Do not sand or grind near flammable materials. Handle sharp bits with care. Never place hands near the spinning bit. Never start the tool while bit is engaged in the material. Always feed the bit into the material in the same direction that the chips are thrown. If the bit becomes jammed in the workpiece, turn the tool off at the switch. Once all moving parts have come to a stop, unplug the tool and work the bit free. Never lay the tool down until the motor has come to a complete standstill. A running tool should not be left unattended. 8 Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained tools with a sharp cutting edge are less likely to bind and are easier to control. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool’ s operation. If damaged, have the tool ser viced before using. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool, may become hazardous when used on another tool. SERVICE Tool ser vice must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Ser vice or maintenance per formed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injur y. When ser vicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance Instructions may create a risk of shock or injur y. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES AND/OR SYMBOLS Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring. Contact with a “live” wire will also make exposed metal parts of the tool “live” and shock the operator . IMPOR TANT SAFETY RULES FOR ROT AR Y TOOLS Always wear safety goggles or eye protection when using this tool. Use a dust mask or respirator for applications which generate dust. Secure the material being worked on. Never hold it in your hand or across your legs. Unstable support can cause loss of control and injur y. When using the Rotar y Tool, always maintain a firm grip on the tool with both hands. Never put your hands or feet in the cutting area. Do not grasp the tool or place your hands too close to the bit. Keep your hands well away from the bit. Never reach underneath the tool while the bit is in motion. Do not use your legs or feet to stabilize the work piece. Always unplug the power cord before making any adjustments or attaching acces- sories.Be careful not to accidentally trip the power switch when setting the tool down or picking the tool up. 7
Never touch the collet or bit immediately after use. To prevent short cir cuits, clean the tools vents regularly with compressed air. Do not alter or misuse tool. This drill is not a dental tool. Do not use on the teeth of animals or humans. SYMBOLS IMPOR TANT : Some of the following symbols may be used on your tool. Please study them and learn their meaning. Proper interpretation of these symbols will allow you to operate the tool better and safer . This rotar y tool is a multipurpose power tool. It is a drill, polisher , power brush, grinder , cutter , and sander all in one. This high-speed, low torque tool is easy to handle and accepts a wide range of accessories from polishers to router bits to wire brushes and grinding wheels. The high speed allows it to do jobs that low speed tools cant handle like engraving glass or cutting hardened steel. Hold the tool in your hand and find your best grip. Never push on the tool. The high speed and the accessor y, not the pressure on the tool, do the work. Practice by making passes on a scrap piece of material. This tool works best if you do the work in small increments, moving back and forth until you reach the desired result. OPERA TING SPEEDS Speed is affected by voltage changes. If the incoming volt- age is reduced, it will slow the RPM of the tool, especially at the lowest setting. If the tool appears to be running slowly , increase the setting accordingly . The operating speed will var y depending on the material and type of accessor y you are using. To find the right speed for your job, use a test piece of the material. Try various speeds until you find the one that is best for your project. If you are doing delicate woodcar ving, polishing, buffing or any use which requires a wire brush, slow speeds of 15,000 RPM or less are best. Any material, like plas- tic, that melts at low temperatures should also be cut at low speeds. If you are car ving, routing, shaping or cutting glass, metal or hardwoods, higher speeds are necessar y. Drilling should also be done at high speed. Softer metals, like aluminium, copper alloys, and tin may be cut at various speeds, depending on the type of cutting being done. A lubricant like wax should be used on the cutter to keep the cut material from adhering to the cutter teeth. If the tool is not per forming the way you think it should, perhaps you are using the wrong accessor y. Putting pressure on the tool will not help the per formance. 12 OPERA TING INSTRUCTIONS Disconnect the power plug from the AC power source before any assembly, adjustments, or adding/removing accessories. Following this preventative step reduces the risk of the saw coming on acciden- tally and the risk of damage to the workpiece and injur y to the operator . Never hold the tool near your face. Accessories like wire brushes or grinding wheels may come apart during use. Be careful not to cover the air vents with your hand. This will cause the motor to overheat. 11 S M H Slo w 8,000-12,000 RPM Medium 20,000-25,000 RPM High 29,000-33,000 RPM SPEEDCONTROLDIAL Rotar y Tool Speed Settings
If you must use an extension cord, be sure that the gauge is large enough to carr y the amount of current necessar y for your power tool. If not, your tool may experience a loss of power , excessive voltage drop or overheating. The smaller the gauge number , the heavier the cord (see table below). Finish tightening the collet by turning the wrench in the direction of the arrow labeled T in the illustration. Do not overtighten.14 MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING Always UNPLUG the Rotar y Tool from the power source before inspecting, performing any maintenance or cleaning. This Rotary Tool is lubricated before it leaves the factor y. This lubrication should last for the life of the tool. No further lubrication is required. Use only mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the tool. Never let any liquid get inside the casing. Never immerse any part of the tool in a liquid. Always keep the ventila- tion openings clear . Brushes will wear with use and should be inspected periodically by qualified personnel.Regularly clean the ventilation slots in your tool using only a soft brush or dry cloth. Never open the Rotar y Tool case. Do not attempt to repair the Rotar y Tool yourself. Opening the case will void your warranty . ACCESSORIES Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may become hazardous when used on another tool. Always attach grounded (3-prong) extension cords to grounded (3-hole) outlets. This product should be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing an escape wire for the electric current. This product is equipped with a cord having a grounding wire with an appropriate grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an outlet that is prop- erly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. 13
CONNECTING FLEXIBLE SHAFT TO TOOL (MODELS 840168 AND 840169) Never bend the flexible shaft with a radius of less than 6” when operating. Please store the flexible shaft in the designated compartment of the tool box when not in use. Not for use with router bits. Use with router bits with cause kickback. 1. Remove spindle nut and collet nut from the tool by turning them counterclockwise. 2. Remove the collet from motor shaft. 3. Insert flexible shaft inner cable into the motor shaft until the stopper touches the motor shaft. 4. Thread flexible shaft collet nut onto the motor shaft by turning it clockwise. Tighten with collet wrench. 5. Thread flexible shaft nut onto the tool housing by turning it clockwise. Only tighten flexible shaft nut finger tight. DO NOT use pliers or wrench. 16 COLLET SIZES Your rotar y tool kit may have multiple collets to accommodate different accessories with var ying shank sizes. To change a collet: 1. Loosen the collet nut as described above, then remove the collet nut. 2. Remove the old collet. 3. Insert the loose collet. 4. Tighten the collet nut as described above. Each collet has a series of rings on its shank that identify its size. • 1/32” – one (1) ring • 1/16” – two (2) rings • 3/32” – three (3) rings • 1/8” – no rings BALANCING For best results, be sure to balance each accessor y in the collet. Your tool’ s high RPM makes imbalances easily detectable as a wobble while the tool is running. To balance an accessor y: 1. Stop the tool. 2. Loosen the collet nut. 3. Rotate the accessor y 1/4 turn. 4. Tighten the collet. 5. Run the tool. 6. Continue adjusting as needed. You will hear and feel when the accessor y is properly balanced. 15 COLLETCOLLET NUT FLEXIBLESHAFT
