WORK AREA Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered work benches and dark work areas may cause accidents or injur y. Do not operate power tools in explosive areas, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep bystanders, children and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. ELECTRICAL SAFETY Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other .) This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way . If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do not change the plug in any way .Double insulation eliminates the need for the three wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators . There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carr y the tool or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep the cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately . Damaged cords increase the risk of electric shock. When operating the tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked “W - A” or “W .”These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of elec- tric shock. Make sure the extension cord being used is in good condition. If there are any cut or nicks (no matter how deep) in the insulation, DO NOT use that cord. Also, make sure the extension cord is heavy enough to carr y the current needed by the Pad Sander (see ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS). DO NOT use small around-the-house” lamp extension cords. These cords can easily overheat and/or catch fire when used with power tools.4 3 CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injur y. CAUTION used without the safety alert symbol indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in property damage. NOTEprovides additional information that is useful for proper use and maintenance of this tool. If a NOTE is indicated make sure it is fully understood. IMPOR TANT SAFEGUARDS People with electronic devices, such as pacemakers, should consult their physician(s) before using this product. Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool’s operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may create a risk of injur y when used on another tool. SERVICE Tool ser vice must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Ser vice or maintenance by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injur y. When ser vicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance Instructions may create a risk of shock or injur y. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES AND/OR SYMBOLS Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring.Contact with a “live” wire will also make exposed metal parts of the tool “live” and shock the operator. IMPOR TANT SAFETY RULES FOR PAD SANDERS Before starting sanding operations with the Pad Sander , you should become ver y familiar with the operation of the tool. If unsure about using the sander for various operations, obtain advice from a qualified person or contact Alltrade Customer Ser vice. Always secure working material before attempting to use the Pad Sander.Never hold the material with your free hand or across your legs. Small or thin material may flex or vibrate causing loss of control of the tool possibly resulting in injury. Before turning the Pad Sander ON, make sure the work area is free of other tools, wood scraps and other debris. Do not use the pad sander for wet sanding or liquid polishing operations! This could result in damage to the Pad Sander and/or electrical shock resulting in serious injur y or even death to the operator . Inspect the work area thoroughly and remove ALL protruding nails, staples, and other foreign materials.Sanding over these objects will tear the sandpaper and damage the bottom backing pad of the sander . 6 PERSONAL SAFETY Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operat- ing a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injur y. Dress properly . Do not wear loose clothing or jewelr y. Contain long hair . Keep your hair , clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelr y or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in tools that have the switch on invites accidents. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the power tool “ON”. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injur y. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-skid safe- ty shoes, hard hat or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions. TOOL USE AND CARE Use clamps or other practical ways to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control. Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed. Do not use the tool if the power switch does not turn it “ON” or “OFF”.Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. Disconnect the power cord plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories or storing the tool. Such preventive safe- ty measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally . Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly main- tained tools with a sharp cutting edge are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

USING THE PAD SANDER: 1.Prepare the workpiece according to instructions in this manual. 2.Plug the sander into an approved power sour ce. 3.Turn on the sander by depressing the ON/OFF switch on the front. 4.Hold the sander against the work- piece with a firm grip. 5.Sand the workpiece in a circular motion. Using a straight in-line motion can cause uneven patterns to result. Do not hold the Pad Sander in one spot for prolonged periods. This can cause the sander to overheat as well as causing scorching on the workpiece. Damage to the Pad Sander and workpiece could result. Always wear approved safety eyewear and appropriate dust filters or respirators when using this tool. MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING CLEANING: To avoid accidents, be sure to disconnect the tool from the electrical power source before any cleaning or maintenance. The tool can be cleaned by using compressed dry air. If compressed air is not available, a soft natural bristle paint brush will work. Always wear safety gog- gles when cleaning tools with compressed air. Avoid using certain cleaning agents and solvents. Chemicals like gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, paint thinner or ammo- nia products can damage the plastic parts of the tool. ACCESSORIES Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may become hazardous when used on another tool. Always attach grounded (3-prong) extension cords to grounded (3-hole) outlets. If you must use an extension cord, be sure that the gauge is large enough to carr y the amount of current necessar y for your power tool. If not, your tool may experi- ence a loss of power , excessive voltage drop or overheating. The smaller the gauge number , the heavier the cord (see table on next page).
