Cakes containing cream and oth- er kinds of pastry products can be stored in the Longfresh 0°C compartment for 2 or 3 days. Not to be placed in the Long- fresh 0°C compartment: • cold sensitive fruit which have to be stored at cellar or room temperature like pineapple, bananas, grapefruit, melons, mango, papaya, oranges, lem- ons, kiwi fruit. • The types of food not men- tioned above should be stored in the refrigerator compart- ment (e.g. all sorts of cheese, cold cuts, etc.) The level of air humidity in the drawers depends on the content of humidity in the stored food, vegetable and fruit and on the frequency of door opening The Longfresh 0°C compartment is also suitable for slow thawing of food. In this case the thawed food can be stored in the Long- fresh 0°C compartment for up to two days. Tips:• Pay attention to the freshness of the food, especially on the expiry date. Quality and freshness influence the storage time. • The whole storage cycle time will de- pend on the preservation conditions made prior to the final storage in the fridge. • Food, fruit or vegetables should al- ways be packed or wrapped up before storage. • Animal food always store packed and dry. • Food rich in proteins will go bad quicker. This means seafood will spoil before fish which in turn will spoil be- fore meat. While storing food in a 0°C compartment storage time for that kind of food can be increased by up to three times as well without loss on quality. • All food stored in a 0°C compartment should be taken out of the drawers roughly 15-30 min before consump- tion, particularly fruit and vegetables to be consumed without any addition- al cooking process. Allowing fruit and vegetables to return to room tempera- ture will improve the texture and fla- vour. 4. HELPFUL HINTS AND TIPS 4.1 Hints for energy saving • Do not open the door frequently or leave it open longer than absolutely necessary. • If the ambient temperature is high and the Temperature Regulator is set to low temperature and the appliance is fully loaded, the compressor may run continuously, causing frost or ice on the evaporator. If this happens, set the Temperature Regulator toward warm- er settings to allow automatic defrost- ing and so a saving in electricity con- sumption. 4.2 Hints for fresh food refrigeration To obtain the best performance: • do not store warm food or evaporat- ing liquids in the refrigerator • do cover or wrap the food, particularly if it has a strong flavour • position food so that air can circulate freely around it 4.3 Hints for refrigeration Useful hints: Meat (all types) : wrap in polythene bags and place on the glass shelf above the vegetable drawer. For safety, store in this way only one or two days at the most. 12www.aeg.com
Cooked foods, cold dishes, etc..: these should be covered and may be placed on any shelf. Fruit and vegetables: these should be thoroughly cleaned and placed in the special drawer(s) provided. Butter and cheese: these should be placed in special airtight containers or wrapped in aluminium foil or polythene bags to exclude as much air as possible. Milk bottles: these should have a cap and should be stored in the bottle rack on the door. Bananas, potatoes, onions and garlic, if not packed, must not be kept in the re- frigerator. 4.4 Hints for freezing To help you make the most of the freez- ing process, here are some important hints: • the maximum quantity of food which can be frozen in 24 hrs. is shown on the rating plate; • the freezing process takes 24 hours. No further food to be frozen should be added during this period; • only freeze top quality, fresh and thor- oughly cleaned, foodstuffs; • prepare food in small portions to ena- ble it to be rapidly and completely fro- zen and to make it possible subse- quently to thaw only the quantity re- quired; • wrap up the food in aluminium foil or polythene and make sure that the packages are airtight;• do not allow fresh, unfrozen food to touch food which is already frozen, thus avoiding a rise in temperature of the latter; • lean foods store better and longer than fatty ones; salt reduces the stor- age life of food; • water ices, if consumed immediately after removal from the freezer com- partment, can possibly cause the skin to be freeze burnt; • it is advisable to show the freezing in date on each individual pack to enable you to keep tab of the storage time. 4.5 Hints for storage of frozen food To obtain the best performance from this appliance, you should: • make sure that the commercially fro- zen foodstuffs were adequately stored by the retailer; • be sure that frozen foodstuffs are transferred from the foodstore to the freezer in the shortest possible time; • not open the door frequently or leave it open longer than absolutely neces- sary; • once defrosted, food deteriorates rap- idly and cannot be refrozen; • do not exceed the storage period in- dicated by the food manufacturer. 5. CARE AND CLEANING CAUTION! Unplug the appliance before car- rying out any maintenance oper- ation. This appliance contains hydrocar- bons in its cooling unit; mainte- nance and recharging must therefore only be carried out by authorized technicians. 5.1 Periodic cleaning The equipment has to be cleaned regu- larly: • clean the inside and accessories with lukewarm water and some neutral soap. • regularly check the door seals and wipe clean to ensure they are clean and free from debris. • rinse and dry thoroughly. ENGLISH13
Do not pull, move or damage any pipes and/or cables inside the cabinet. Never use detergents, abrasive powders, highly perfumed clean- ing products or wax polishes to clean the interior as this will dam- age the surface and leave a strong odour. Clean the condenser (black grill) and the compressor at the back of the appliance with a brush. This operation will improve the performance of the appliance and save electricity consumption. The lowest shelf, dividing the cooler compartment from the LONGFRESH 0°C compartment can be removed only for cleaning. To remove pull out the shelf straight. The cover plates above the drawers in the compartment can be taken out for cleaning. To make sure fully functionality of the LONGFRESH 0°C compartment the low- est shelf and cover plates must be put back in their original position after clean- ing. Take care of not to damage the cooling system. Many proprietary kitchen surface clean- ers contain chemicals that can attack/ damage the plastics used in this appli- ance. For this reason it is recommended that the outer casing of this appliance is only cleaned with warm water with a little washing-up liquid added. After cleaning, reconnect the equipment to the mains supply. 5.2 Replacing the carbon filter To get best performance the carbon air filter should be changed once every year. New active air filters can be purchased from your local dealer. Refer to “Installation of the carbon air fil- ter” for the instructions. The air filter is a consumable accessory and as such is not covered by the guar- antee. 5.3 Defrosting of the refrigerator Defrosting of the fridge compartment is automatic. The water that forms flows into a recipi- ent on the compressor and evaporates. This recipient cannot be removed. 5.4 Defrosting the freezer A certain amount of frost will always form on the freezer shelves and around the top compartment. Defrost the freezer when the frost layer reaches a thickness of about 3-5 mm. About 12 hours prior to defrost- ing, set the Temperature regula- tor toward higher settings, in or- der to build up sufficient chill re- serve for the interruption in oper- ation. 14www.aeg.com
To remove the frost, follow the instruc- tions below: 1.Switch off the appliance. 2.Remove any stored food, wrap it in several layers of newspaper and put it in a cool place. CAUTION! Do not touch frozen goods with wet hands. Hands can freeze to the goods. 3.Leave the door open and insert the plastic scraper in the appropriate seating at the bottom centre, plac- ing a basin underneath to collect the defrost water. In order to speed up the defrost- ing process, place a pot of warm water in the freezer compart- ment. In addition, remove pieces of ice that break away before de- frosting is complete. 4.When defrosting is completed, dry the interior thoroughly and keep the scraper for future use. 5.Switch on the appliance. 6.After two or three hours, reload the previously removed food into the compartment. Never use sharp metal tools to scrape off frost from the evaporator as you could damage it. Do not use a mechanical device or any artificial means to speed up the thawing process other than those recommended by the manufacturer. A temperature rise of the frozen food packs, during defrosting, may shorten their safe storage life. 5.5 Periods of non-operation When the appliance is not in use for long periods, take the following precau- tions: •disconnect the appliance from elec- tricity supply • remove all food• defrost (if foreseen) and clean the ap- pliance and all accessories • leave the door/doors ajar to prevent unpleasant smells. If the cabinet will be kept on, ask some- body to check it once in a while to pre- vent the food inside from spoiling in case of a power failure. ENGLISH15
