S6X Manual / English 1. Introduction Dear custo\fer, Thank you for choosing the \bD\bM \budio S6X \fainfield \fo\nnitor. \bD\bM loudspeakers are built for \faxi\fu\f quality reproduction and audio perfection. Our speakers of the SX series are precise, high-resolution speaker syste\fs which \feet highest expectations in sound quality and crafts\fanship. The S6X is suitable for \fain \fonitoring. It is an ideal tool for no-co\fpro\fise sound reproduction in all lar\nger environ\fents. The S6X is a four-way ported active syste\f that uses the new X-\bRT tweeter and an X-\bRT \fidrange speaker, ensuring full co\fpatibility with the latest expanded high frequency resolution \fedia for\fats plus four HexaCone ©-bass/\fidrange drivers. Each one of the drivers uses an individua\nl PWM a\fp with continuous output\n of up to 500 Watts (RMS) for the subwoofer channels and 250 Watts (RMS) for the Treble- and \fidrange drivers. This \fanual is intended to provide you with infor\fation about your new \bD\bMs. It contains important information regarding safety, setting up, handling, and warranty. 6 2.1 Important Information for set up \bfter having unpacked your loudspeaker, please allow the syste\f to accli\fate to the te\fperature of the roo\f for approxi\fately an hour. We reco\f\fend using high q\nuality cables to guarantee opti\fal perfor\fance. It is i\fportant to ensure the speakers sit fir\fly on a solid surface! We reco\f\fend that you retain the original packaging, as it is the best way to guarantee safe transportation should the need to do so arise. Please note that the loudspeakers will take so\fe break-in ti\fe to achieve opti\fu\f sonic perfor\fance. 2.2 Connecting the spea\ckers a) Before connecting the loudspeakers to your audio co\fponents and the power source \fake sure that both the loudspeakers and your audio source are switched off and set the level controls fully counterclockwise. \f) Connect the loudspeakers with your audio source by using XLR cables. The \fa\nle plug goes into the loudspeaker, the fe\fale plug into your audio co\fponent. c) Check if the specified voltage \fatches the voltage of the power supply you use. If this is not the case do not conne\nct the loudspeakers to a power source! Please contact your local dealer o\nr national distributor. If the voltages \fatch, use the included power cables to connect the loudspeaker to the \bC sockets. d) Switch on the \fain on/off switch on the front panel of the loudspeaker. e) Make sure that the line out level (volu\fe) of your stereo is either at a low level or all the way off. Then, switch on your audio syste\f. f) Turn on your source of \fusic and adju\nst the volu\fe carefully. 2. Quick Start
S6X Manual / English 3.1 General recommendations Please \fake sure that there are no obstacles in the way fro\f the \fonitor to your ears. You should be able \nto see the speakers co\fpletely. The distance to the surrounding walls should be at \nleast 40 c\f to avoid early reflections, which will degrade the sound. The loudspeakers should be aligned\n with the listener’s position. Please note that vibrating parts of nearby objects can \fask \nthe sound. Mechanical adjustments: If you plan to \fodify the speaker cabinet (e.g. dr\nilling holes), please cont\nact us before doing so. Usually, we will handle your warranty obliging. 3.2 Tweeter at the height o\cf ears The Tweeter should be posit\nioned approxi\fately at the height of your ears. If the speaker does not point r\night in your direction, you \fight lose sound \n infor\fation. In case you need to position the speaker in a significant l\nower or higher positi\non, the \fonitor should be angled accordingly. 3. Speaker Placement
3.3 The Stereo Triangle If the loudspeaker is going to be used for stereo ap- plications, the opti\fu\f listening position shoul\nd be at the top of an i\faginary equilateral triangle with the two loudspeakers should be placed\n at the other two points of this triangle. The loudspeakers should be aligned\n with the listener’s position. 3.4 Surround Placement Speaker positioning for \fulti-channel stereo purposes is ideally based on a circle with speakers placed at 0° (Center), 30° (Front Right), 110° (Rear Right), 250° (Rear Left), 330° (Front Left), with the listener being the circle’s center (Radius between 0.7-2.0 \f). This\n ITU reco\f\fended configuration \fay vary depending on the purpose of the control roo\f (\fusic or fil\f). \nHowever, it is reco\f\fended to create a sy\f\fetrical lis\ntening position with the front side and surround speaker pointing to the listener’s ear. The distance to the surrounding walls should be at \nleast 40 c\f to avoid early reflections, which can degrade the sound. 3. Speaker Placement
S6X Manual / English 4.1 The front control panel On the front you will find a new, highly sophisticated control panel that allows detailed fine-tuning of your loudspeakers to your particular roo\f acoustics and personal listening preferences. The following tips are intended to assist you at using the controls in the best \fanner. Please note that using the controls \fay have a great i\fpact on the overall sound characteristics of your loudspeakers. We reco\f\fend using the controls with ut\fost care and only after several audio tests with fa\filiar recordings. 4.2 Input Gain ‘Input Gain’ regulates the overall input sensitivity of your loudspeaker within a range of -10 to +10 dB, and controls the volu\fe of your loudspeaker equally in all frequency ranges. 4.3 X-Curve Filter In large fil\f score \fixing roo\fs, it \fay be desirable to have a representation of what the sound is like in \fovie theatres. To \feet the ISO 2969 Standard, the Dolby™ X-curve has to be applied. The X-curve engages a 3 dB per octave roll-off above 2 kHz. The S6X has a switch located below the input selector that activates this filter, eli\finating the need for external processing during fil\f score \fixing sessions. 4. Speaker Adjustment
4.4 Driver Gain Whereas the ‘Input Gain’ raises or lowers the overall input sensitivity up \nto +/-10 dB, the ‘Driver Gains’ work only within the corresponding frequency range, raising or lowering fro\f +/-2 to +/-6 dB. 4.5 High / Low Shelf EQs The other two controls operate in a different \fanner. The ‘High’ and ‘L\now’ controls are shelving filters that progressively lower or raise frequencies below 150 Hz / above 6 kHz up to 6 dB (see Fig.). 4.6 Bass EQ Section There are three fully para\fetric EQs (20 Hz \nto 200 Hz) that can be used to co\fbat standing waves in the control roo\f. The EQs can be\n bypassed individually or as a group so that their overall effect can be analyzed in direct co\fparison to the unaffected signal. 4.7 LED Dim \bll LED indicators can be di\f\fed if necessary by pressing the ‘LED Di\f’- button. 4. Speaker Adjustment Room EQ 6 kHz fo\b high f\bequencies above 6 kHz
