5 EA-SX Manual / English 1. Introduction Dear custo\fer, Thank you for choosing the \bD\bM \budio External \b\fplifier Unit. The \bD\bM External \b\fplifier Unit E\b-SX has been designed for driving the following studio \fonitor \fodels externally in order to be able to flush \fount these \fonitors into the control roo\f wall: S2X, S3X-H, S3X-V, S4X-H, S4X-V, S5X-H, S5X-V. The 19“ / 3U rack unit contains the sa\fe electronic circuitry together with the co\fprehensive control setting options o\nf the a\fplifiers that can be found in all SX \fonitors listed above. This \fanual is intended to provide you with infor\fation about the External \b\fp Unit and the SX \fonitors you are driving with it. It contains important information regarding safety, setting up, handling, and warranty. We request that you read these sections carefully to ensure easy set up and p\nrevent potential proble\fs. If you have any questions about this or any of our products, please don’t hesitate to contact us – we will be happy to assist you. For detailed infor\fation concerning \bD\bM’s technologies and products, co\fplete reviews, and a list of worldwide \bD\bM users and studios, please visit our website: www.adam-audio.com You are invited to share your experience with our products by joining us on Facebook and also, if you don’t want to \fiss out on the latest info on \bD\bM Professional \budio, co\fe and follow us on Twitter! 6 2.1 Important Information for set up We reco\f\fend using high q\nuality XLR cables \nto guarantee opti\fal perfor\fance. We reco\f\fend that you retain the original packaging, as it is the best way to guarantee safe transportation should the need to do so arise. Please note that with the use of the EA-SX e\fternal amp unit the option to retro\bt the SX monitors with the ADAM DA-SX 24 bit/192 kHz D/A converter will not be available anymore. 2.2 Connecting the external amp unit to the monitors a) Before connecting the loudspeakers to the 19” external a\fp unit \fake sure that your audio source is switched off. \f) Connect each \fonitor to one E\b-SX a\fp unit by using one Speakon cable. You can order cables in either 5 or 10 \feter lengths fro\f \bD\bM \budio. Please note that in order to connect the monitors to the e\fternal amp unit you mus\Xt use the ADAM Audio ready-made Speakon cables. Attention owne\fs of the S5X-H\b You will find two Speakon jacks on each \fonitor that have to be connected to one E\b-SX a\fp unit per \fonitor. Please \fake sure you do not cross the two cables while connec\nting the\f to the external a\fp unit. The respective Speakon jacks on both the \fonitors and the external a\fp unit are labelled with Speakon 1 and Speakon 2 and have to be connected correspondingly. c) Connect your \fixing desk/D\bW to one E\b-SX per \fonitor channel using the XLR connector on the back panel of the external a\fp unit. d) Check if the specified voltage \fatches the voltage of the power supply you use. If this is not the case do not conne\nct the E\b-SX to a power source! Please contact your local dealer o\nr national distributor. If the voltages \fatch, use the included power cables to connect the E\b-SX to the \bC socket. e) Power on the external a\fp unit at the back panel first and then at the front (Standby switch). f) Turn on your audio source and adjust the volu\fe carefully. 2. Quick Start
7 EA-SX Manual / English 3.1 General recommendations Please \fake sure that there are no obstacles in the way fro\f the \fonitor to your ears. You should be able \nto see the speakers co\fpletely. The loudspeakers should be aligned\n with the listener’s position. Please note that vibrating parts of nearby objects can \fask \nthe sound. Mechanical adjustments: If you plan to \fodify the speaker cabinet (e.g. dr\nilling holes), please cont\nact us before doing so. Usually, we will handle your warranty obliging. 3.2 Flush mounting the \cmonitors Should you consider to flush \fount your \fonitors, this would bring so\fe acoustical benefits. Cabinet edge diffraction and also low frequency reflections that would nor\fally occur fro\f the wall behind the speaker can be avoided that way. The result is an i\fproved \fid and low frequency response. Regarding the orientation of the \fonitors please \fake sure the acoustical axis of each \fonitor points directly to the listening position. In larger control roo\fs the \fonitors should be angled in the vertical plane so that the acoustic axis \feets in the \fiddle of the standing and seated listening position. In the horizontal plane the \fonitors should be placed according to the standard stereophonic (60° between L/R channels) or \fultichannel (ITU-R BS.775\n-1) setup reco\f\fendations. Fo\f fu\fthe\f info\fmation on installation we \fecommend contacting an acoustics specialist o\f a p\fofessional \feco\fding studio design/const\fuction company. 3. Speaker Installation
8 4.1 The front control panel On the front of the a\fp unit you will find a contr\nol panel that allows detailed fine-tuning of your loudspeakers to your particular roo\f acoustics and personal listening preferences. The following tips are intended to assist you at using the controls in the best \fanner. Please note that using the controls \fay have a great i\fpact on the overall sound characteristics of your loudspeakers. We reco\f\fend using the controls with ut\fost care and only after several audio tests with fa\filiar recordings. 4.2 Stand\fy switch and LEDs While the \fain power switch can be found on the rear of the external a\fp unit, there is also a switch for power on/ standby on the front panel. In standby \fode, the switch glows orange, in power on \fode it glows green. To the right of the standby switch you can find two LEDs: • In case of an overload, the OL LED will flash red. The protective circuit will safe your speaker fro\f da\fage. • The D/A LED on the E\b-SX is without function as the D/\b converter option is not available with the use of the external a\fp unit. 4. Speaker Adjustment
9 EA-SX Manual / English 4.3 Input Controls There are two different controls to regulate the overall input sensitivity: • One control allows for coarse settings fro\f -20dB to +8dB. The control works in 4dB steps. • The other control is intended for \bne tuning in 0.5dB steps, ranging fro\f -1.5dB to 2dB. 4.4 Bass Controls There are two different controls to regulate the lower frequencies: • The EQ 80 Hz control is a bell equalizer to boost bass response. • The 6 kHz control is a shelf filter that allows to progressively raise or lower the frequencies above 6 kHz (see Fig.). 4. 10 \bll \bD\bM products are designed and \fanufactured to the highest quality standards. However, if any proble\fs with your speaker occur, we reco\f\fend to proceed as follows: 5.1 P\foblem: The LED shows nor\fal operation (green) but there is either no or on\fy a d\bstorted aud\bo s\bgna\f. If both (all) speaker channels are affected, the reason can probably be found within the signal path. If only one speaker is affected, the proble\f will probably be within this speaker or the external a\fp unit. a) Check the wiring. Is the cable defective? \bre all cables connec\nted correctly? \f) Check the signal path. Interchange the cables of both external a\fp units. Does the proble\f change with one of the cables? Connect the external a\fp units as directly to the signal source as pos- sible. Is another part of the signal path (e.g. \fixer, subwoofer) defective? If the answer to all these questions is ‘no’, the proble\f is being cause\nd by the loudspeaker or the external a\fp unit with the ut\fost probability. If the answer to at least one of these questions is ‘yes’, there will prob- ably be another defective device within the signal path. 5.2 P\foblem: You hear paras\bt\bc no\bses (like hu\f\fing, buzzing, so\nughing, cracking). Please disconnect t\nhe signal cables. If the noises disappear\n, check the signal path. If the noises can still be heard, check for other electrical devices close to the speakers (\fobile phones, s\nwitching power supplies, etc.). If there is no interfering device the speaker will probably cause the proble\f. 5. Trou\fleshooting
