General Care and Troubleshooting Xerox Phaser 4600/4620 User Guide101 Rear Cover Areas There is a jam at the exit or at the rear cover. The control panel will specify a fault has occurred. When the Error screen is displayed, press OK for further information. If the Error screen is not visible, press the Back button to access the Error screen. 1. Open the rear cover. WARNING:Be careful, some components inside the rear cover may be hot. 2. Remove the jammed paper. Confirm that all paper fragments are removed. 3. If you did not find jammed paper in Step 2, open the fuser exit guide door and pull the jammed paper completely out of the printer. 4. Close the fuser exit guide door and the rear cover. The control panel will specify a fault has occurred. When the Error screen is displayed, press OK for further information. If the Error screen is not visible, press the Back button to access the Error screen. 1. Open the top cover. 2. Pull the duplex unit out of the printer. If the paper does not come out with the duplex unit, remove the paper from the bottom of the printer. 3. Reinstall the duplex unit and close the top cover. When the Error screen is displayed, press OK for further information. If the Error screen is not visible, press the Back button to access the Error screen. 1. Open the rear finisher door 2. Remove the jammed paper. Confirm that all paper fragments are removed. 3. Close the rear finisher door. Paper Size Jam There is a jam at the exit or at the rear cover. The control panel will specify a fault has occurred. When the Error screen is displayed, press OK for further information. If the Error screen is not visible, press the Back button to access the Error screen. 1. Pull the tray completely out of the printer. 2. Confirm that the paper tray guides are pressed firmly against the paper. 3. Insert the tray into the printer slot and push it completely to the back of the printer. 4. If the control panel prompts you: • If you haven't changed the type of paper, press the OK button. • If you have changed the type of paper, scroll to the correct paper type and press the OK button. If you have a duplex unit, close the duplex unit cover. Error Messages Use the following information to solve problems on the machine. Some messages may not appear in the display depending on options or models. . Paper Empty at TrayThe paper in the paper tray has run out.Load paper in the tray indicated by the warning message. Paper Empty at Bypass TrayThe paper in Paper Tray 1 (Bypass) has run out.Load paper in Paper Tray 1 (Bypass). Tray O pe nPaper tray is not securely closed.Close the paper tray until it locks into place. Jam from TrayPaper has jammed in the paper tray.Open the indicated tray and remove the jammed paper. By doing this, printing operations can be temporarily resumed. Reinstall Toner Cartridge. Close top cover. Reorder Toner Cartridge. Toner EmptyToner Cartridge is empty.Open top cover. Replace with new Toner Cartridge. Toner Cartridge Not InstalledThe Toner Cartridge is not installed or not installed correctly. Install the Toner Cartridge. If already installed, check it has been installed correctly. If problem persists, call for service. Toner Supplying ErrorToner is not being supplied correctly.Check the Toner Cartridge is installed securely. Invalid Toner CartridgeThe installed Toner Cartridge is not a valid Xerox cartridge.Check the Toner Cartridge and install a valid Xerox cartridge if necessary. If problem persists, call for service. Output AreasOutput Tray FullOutput tray full.Remove printed material from Output tray. Staple Cartridge Not InstalledStaple cartridge not installed.Install staple cartridge. Follow the suggested solutions until the problem is corrected. If the problem persists, call for service. ConditionSuggested Solutions Paper jams during printing.• Clear the paper jam. (See Fa u l t C l e a ra n c e on page 97.) Paper sticks together.• Check the maximum paper capacity of the tray. (See Paper Supply on page 123.) • Make sure that you are using the correct type of paper. (See Media Specifications on page 62.) • Remove paper from the tray and flex or fan the paper. • Humid conditions may cause some paper to stick together. Paper does not feed into the machine.• Remove any obstructions from inside the machine. • Paper has not been loaded correctly. Remove paper from the tray and reload it correctly. • There is too much paper in the tray. Remove excess paper from the tray. • The paper is too thick. Use only paper that meets the specifications required by the machine. (See Paper Supply on page 123.) • If you are printing on special media, use Paper Tray 1 (Bypass). The paper keeps jamming.• There is too much paper in the tray. Remove excess paper from the tray. If you are printing on special materials, use Paper Tray 1 (Bypass). • An incorrect type of paper is being used. Use only paper that meets the specifications required by the machine. (See Media Specifications on page 62.) • There may be debris inside the machine. Open the top cover, remove the Toner Cartridge and any debris. Re-insert the Toner Cartridge. Transparencies stick together in the paper exit.• Use only transparencies specifically designed for laser printers. Remove each transparency as it exits from the machine. Check the power switch and the power source. The machine is not selected as the default machine.• Select your machine as your default machine in Windows. Check the machine for the following: • The top cover is not closed. Close the top cover. • Paper is jammed. Clear the paper jam. (See Fault Clearance on page 97.) • No paper is loaded. Load paper. (See Loading Paper on page 56.) • The Toner Cartridge is not installed. Install the Toner Cartridge. If a system error occurs, contact your service representative. The connection cable between the computer and the machine is not connected properly.• Disconnect the machine cable and reconnect it. The connection cable between the computer and the machine is defective.• If possible, attach the cable to another computer that is working properly and print a job. You can also try using a different machine cable. The port setting is incorrect.• Check the Windows printer setting to make sure that the print job is sent to the correct port. If the computer has more than one port, make sure that the machine is attached to the correct one. The machine may be configured incorrectly. • Check the printer driver options to ensure that all of the print settings are correct. (See Print Procedure on page 30.) The printer driver may be incorrectly installed.• Reinstall the printer software. (Refer to the System Administrator Guide for instructions.) The machine is malfunctioning.• Check the display message on the control panel to see if the machine is indicating a system error. Contact a service representative. The document size is so big that the hard disk space of the computer is insufficient to access the print job.• You might need to reduce the complexity of the page or install more memory. General Care and Troubleshooting Xerox Phaser 4600/4620 User Guide 108 The machine selects print materials from the wrong paper source.The paper option that was selected in the Printing Preferences may be incorrect.• For many software applications, the paper source selection is found under the Paper tab within the Printing Preferences. Select the correct paper source. (See Paper/Output on page 31.) A print job is extremely slow.The job may be very complex.• Reduce the complexity of the page or try adjusting the print quality settings. Half the page is blank.The page orientation setting may be incorrect.• Change the page orientation in your application. See the printer driver help screen. The paper size and the paper size settings do not match.• Ensure that the paper size in the printer driver settings matches the paper in the tray. • Or, ensure that the paper size in the printer driver settings matches the paper selection in the software application settings you use. The machine prints, but the text is wrong, garbled or incomplete.The machine cable is loose or defective.• Disconnect the machine cable and reconnect. Try a print job that you have already printed successfully. If possible, attach the cable and the machine to another computer that you know works and try a print job. • Try a new machine cable. The wrong printer driver was selected.• Check the application’s printer selection menu to ensure that your machine is selected. The software application is malfunctioning.• Try printing a job from another application. The operating system is malfunctioning.• Exit Windows and reboot the computer. Turn the machine off and back on again. Pages print, but they are blank.The Toner Cartridge is defective or out of toner.• Redistribute the toner, if necessary. • If necessary, replace the Toner Cartridge. The file may have blank pages.• Check the file to ensure that it does not contain blank pages. Some parts, such as the controller or the board, may be defective.• Contact a service representative.
