Yourcomputercantravelwithyouwhereveryougo.Butevenathome,youcanexploretheglobeandaccess
informationfrommillionsofwebsitesusingyourcomputerandawiredorwirelessnetworkconnection.This chapterwillhelpyougetconnectedtothatworld.
Connecting to a wireless network
Yourcomputermaybeequippedwithoneormoreofthefollowingwirelessdevices:


						

							Connecting to a WLANNOTE:WhenyouaresettingupInternetaccessinyourhome,youmustestablishanaccountwithan
Internetserviceprovider(ISP).TopurchaseInternetserviceandamodem,contactalocalISP.TheISPwill
helpsetupthemodem,installanetworkcabletoconnectyourwirelessroutertothemodem,andtestthe Internetservice.
ToconnecttoaWLAN,followthesesteps:
1.BesurethattheWLANdeviceison.
2.Selectthenetworkstatusiconinthetaskbar,andthenconnecttooneoftheavailablenetworks.
IftheWLANisasecurity-enabledWLAN,youarepromptedtoenterasecuritycode.Enterthecode,and
thenselect
Nexttocompletetheconnection.
NOTE:IfnoWLANsarelisted,youmaybeoutofrangeofawirelessrouteroraccesspoint.NOTE:IfyoudonotseetheWLANyouwanttoconnectto,right-clickthenetworkstatusiconinthe
taskbar,andthenselect
Open Network and Sharing Center.SelectSet up a new connection or 
network
.Alistofoptionsisdisplayed,allowingyoutomanuallysearchforandconnecttoanetworkor
tocreateanewnetworkconnection.
3.Followtheon-screeninstructionstocompletetheconnection.
Aftertheconnectionismade,selectthenetworkstatusiconatthefarrightofthetaskbar,toverifythename
andstatusoftheconnection.
NOTE:Thefunctionalrange(howfaryourwirelesssignalstravel)dependsonWLANimplementation,router
manufacturer,andinterferencefromotherelectronicdevicesorstructuralbarrierssuchaswallsand


						

							Using GPS (select products only)
YourcomputermaybeequippedwithaGlobalPositioningSystem(GPS)device.GPSsatellitesdeliverlocation,
speed,anddirectioninformationtoGPS-equippedsystems.
ToenableGPS,makesurelocationisenabledundertheWindowsprivacysetting.
1.Typelocationinthetaskbarsearchbox,andthenselectLocation privacy settings.
2.Followtheon-screeninstructionsforusinglocationsettings.

yourcomputer.Computersconnectedtothenetworkcanexchangesoftwareanddatawitheachother.
