How to Convert Steps to Miles Y ou’re weari ng your ped omet er and counti ng your steps. Do you wa nt to see how many miles you’re walking? Here’s how to co nvert your persona l steps to mil es. 1. Wear the ped omet er and w al k one lap around a 400- meter track (the kind found at a high school ). (If you don ’t ha ve acce ss to a trac k, you can drive a route, measuring a mil e on your car’s odometer—be sure you know ex actly where to start and stop! T h en wal k the same route.) 2. Multiply the num ber of steps you take in one lap ( 400 meters) b y 4. The res ult is t h e nu mber o f s teps y o u ta ke in on e m ile . O r, if yo u are w alk in g t h e mil e you measured on your car’s o domet er, just see how many s tep s you rec ord ed on your ped omet er. 3. Use this nu mber to figure out tota l di stance per day by dividi ng your total dail y steps by the num ber of ste ps yo u ta ke in o n e m ile . Exampl e: C harlott e wears her pedo met er fo r a wal k ar ound t h e qua rter-mi le track at Cent ral High School, and it counts 495 steps. Sh e multipli es 495 by fou r, and finds th at she takes about 1980 steps per m ile. She rounds u p to 2000 step s to mak e th e math ea sier. H er pedometer sho ws she w alked 9000 steps t od ay.
